To capture a page with Screenshotlayer from Node.js, send a GET request to its capture endpoint with your access key and the page URL, then save the image response as a file. Install Axios and set your access key

capture();This example uses CommonJS imports and Axios’s arraybuffer response mode so the successful response can be written as binary image data. Check the response handling supported by the Axios version installed in your project. The code checks the content type before saving: an HTTP-success response is not assumed to be an image. The endpoint’s current error response format is not established by the cited product pages, so the diagnostic prints the returned body rather than trying to parse it as a particular JSON schema.
Choose capture parameters
Screenshotlayer’s homepage and FAQ describe a number of request options. Check the current API documentation for accepted values and limits before relying on a parameter in production.

Handle failures and avoid wasting calls
A robust integration should distinguish transport failures, API errors, and unexpected successful responses. Axios rejects non-2xx responses by default, which lets the catch block report the HTTP status and response body. A timeout or network exception has no HTTP response to inspect.
- Missing key: Check that
SCREENSHOTLAYER_ACCESS_KEYis set in the process environment and that it belongs to the account making the request. - Authentication or plan error: Inspect the response body and account plan; Screenshotlayer says features and usage depend on subscription level.
- HTML or JSON instead of an image: The content-type guard prevents writing an error response under an image filename. Read the returned body and verify the endpoint, key, target URL, and parameters.
- Timeout: A slow target page or connection can exceed the client timeout. Increase the timeout only when appropriate, and avoid retrying blindly because each request may count against plan usage.
- Invalid target URL: Supply a complete, reachable URL and check whether the page requires authentication or blocks automated access.
- Unexpected cached image: Screenshotlayer’s FAQ reports a 30-day default cache duration. If a refreshed capture matters, consult its current documentation for cache and TTL controls.
Choose a plan for your request volume
Screenshotlayer’s pricing page advertised the following plan figures on 2026-10-03. Pricing and allowances can change, so verify the current plan page before budgeting. Its FAQ says unused monthly calls do not carry over under the subscription terms; those terms page was last modified on 17 February 2018.
