There is no single price for a 24/7 4K 60fps YouTube Live loop. As a rate-card example, one H.264 UHD input plus one H.264 UHD output in Google Cloud’s us-central1 Live Stream API pricing totals $2.35 per active hour, or about $1,692 for 720 hours. That is an estimate for encoding resources—not a complete bill for every workflow, and not the price of a managed playlist service.
First decide what “cloud transcoding” includes
A prerecorded loop sent to YouTube can involve several different costs. The cloud may simply encode a source and send one feed to YouTube, or it may also manage playlists, redundant inputs, multiple output renditions, captions, and distribution to viewers. Those are not interchangeable architectures.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That means a creator sending one feed to YouTube does not automatically need to build a multi-rendition viewer delivery ladder. Cloud encoding and YouTube’s viewer playback renditions are separate stages.
- Encoding to YouTube: estimate the cloud input and output resources and active time.
- Managed loop playout: compare a subscription that actually includes the desired 4K60 tier, playlist and storage limits, monitoring, and restart behavior.
- Serving viewers yourself: add packaging, origin, and CDN delivery costs based on audience, bitrate, geography, and caching. Do not add those costs to a YouTube-only destination.
Google Cloud rate-card example for one UHD feed
Google Cloud’s pricing page lists us-central1 rates of $0.85 per hour for an H.264 (AVC) UHD input and $1.50 per hour for an H.264 UHD output. For one of each, the arithmetic is $0.85 + $1.50 = $2.35 per active hour. At 720 hours—the arithmetic assumption for a continuously active 30-day month—that is $1,692.

This is a calculation from the displayed rates, not an average market price or a quote for a complete customer bill. It assumes one UHD AVC input, one UHD AVC output, and 720 billed hours. It excludes any extra outputs, distribution endpoints, captions, storage, data transfer or egress, taxes, and other workflow services. The figure is specific to the listed us-central1 rates; check the region and current price schedule for your deployment.
How codec choice changes the arithmetic
The same pricing page lists H.265 (HEVC) UHD input at $0.42 per hour and UHD output at $3.00 per hour. One input plus one output therefore totals $3.42 per hour, or $2,462.40 over 720 hours using those listed rates. This is a separate rate-card calculation, not a claim that HEVC is always the right or cheapest choice for a particular workflow.
Why a multi-output channel costs more
Google’s page gives a separate illustrative us-central1 channel example with two UHD H.264 inputs and seven mixed H.264/HEVC outputs, totaling $8.89 per hour. It is configuration-specific and should not be compared as if it were the same setup as one input and one output. It shows why the output count, codec, and chosen rendition ladder matter.

What can raise a cloud-encoding bill
- Active hours: Google bills channel resources according to how long a channel remains active; it may be billable even when there is no input stream. The pricing page states a 10-minute minimum and minute rounding after that.
- Additional outputs: Each rendition or output resource adds cost. A 4K60 input does not by itself mean you need multiple customer-generated outputs for YouTube playback.
- Distribution resources: Google lists a $0.75-per-hour distribution endpoint fee, and distribution streams are billed as additional outputs. Include these only if your architecture uses them.
- Captions and translations: Google lists automatic captions or translations at $0.75 per minute per unique generated text-output language. This can overwhelm ordinary encoding charges if run continuously, so include it only when used.
- Redundancy and workflow choices: Multiple inputs, backup paths, and extra processing resources change the configuration and its cost.
- Delivery and transfer: Data transfer or viewer-facing CDN delivery belongs in the estimate only when the architecture actually sends video to viewers outside YouTube.
Google’s pricing page states no free usage tier for this service.

AWS says MediaLive charges are assembled from selected inputs, outputs, and add-on features, with price varying by codec, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate. Its published example for a standard channel in US East (N. Virginia) totals $21.791 per hour and uses two UHD inputs, standard redundancy, and six outputs, including a UHD HEVC output at 30fps. It is not an apples-to-apples alternative to Google’s one-input/one-output calculation, and the cited UHD HEVC output is not a 4K60 output.
AWS also notes that a channel can incur charges while running without input or output activity, and data transfer can add costs depending on where content goes. AWS describes reserved pricing for qualifying usage with a 12-month commitment, with published savings of up to 75% versus on-demand for applicable resources; eligibility and the relevant resources matter.

Encoding cost versus public delivery cost
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide estimates about $13.04 for encoding and packaging plus $1,492.56 for distribution—$1,505.60 total—for its one-hour 1080p example with approximately 10,000 viewers in US East (N. Virginia). This is an AWS scenario, not a 4K60 or YouTube-only quote. Its value here is illustrating that public delivery can dwarf encoding when a service distributes to a large audience; those distribution charges should not be applied to a YouTube-only ingest workflow.
Use YouTube’s current ingest settings, not an old sample blindly
YouTube Help’s current encoder-settings guidance recommends 35 Mbps for 2160p60 AV1/H.265 and 50 Mbps for 2160p60 H.264. Use the recommendation matching your output codec and confirm YouTube’s current guidance when configuring a live encoder.

Estimate your own monthly cost
For a first pass, calculate encoding resources separately from viewer delivery:
Monthly cloud encode estimate ≈ (hourly input charges + hourly output charges + hourly add-ons) × active hours + separate distribution or transfer charges.
- Choose the provider and region; confirm the current rate card there.
- List every billed input and output, with its codec, resolution, and frame-rate tier.
- Multiply each hourly resource charge by the hours the channel will be active. For a continuously active 30-day month, the example uses 720 hours.
- Add only the endpoints, captions, packaging, transfer, storage, redundancy, or other services your architecture uses.
- If you serve viewers outside YouTube, estimate delivery separately using audience size, bitrate, geography, and cache behavior.
- For a fixed-price managed service, verify the price of the actual plan that includes 4K60 and the needed playlist and operating features; do not substitute its entry price for that tier without confirmation.
Choose the workflow that fits the loop
- Local encoding to YouTube: The operator supplies and runs the computer, encoder, and internet connection. If the source is already encoded and keeping local equipment running is acceptable, cloud encoding may not be needed.
- Self-managed cloud encoding: You control the cloud channel and its inputs and outputs. Estimate every active resource and decide whether redundancy or extra renditions are necessary.
- Managed cloud playout: A service may combine playlist looping and cloud broadcasting under a subscription rather than itemized hourly encoding rates. Verify the exact resolution/frame-rate tier, included hours, storage and playlist limits, destinations, restart/monitoring behavior, and cancellation or overage terms.

Quick Recap
Common budgeting mistakes
- Treating a rate-card calculation as a finished bill: the $2.35-per-hour Google example covers only the stated one-input/one-output UHD AVC resources in us-central1, before extras.
- Comparing unlike provider examples: Google’s one-input/one-output pair and AWS’s multi-input, multi-output redundant channel use different configurations and regions.
- Paying for a viewer ladder you do not need: YouTube creates playback renditions for viewers; add outputs only for an actual workflow requirement.
- Mixing YouTube ingest with public CDN delivery: distribution estimates for an independently served audience do not belong in a YouTube-only destination estimate.
- Assuming a managed service’s starting tier includes 4K60: confirm the exact tier and included terms before comparing it with cloud-encoding rates.
