ScreenshotAPI Review for Indian Web Developers: Features, Pricing, and Caveats

ScreenshotAPI offers a POST-based website capture API with useful rendering controls, but Indian developers should verify its conflicting free quota, checkout terms, and local payment and tax details.

ScreenshotAPI is a hosted website-capture API: send a POST request with a URL or raw HTML and an API key, then receive an image response. Its reference documents PNG and JPEG output and controls for viewport size, waits, full-page capture, and CSS. For Indian developers, the main buying caveats are that the pricing page conflicts on the free allowance and does not establish INR billing or India-specific payment support. This review covers the documented request model, what to verify before paying, and ScreenshotNeo as an alternative.

What ScreenshotAPI does

ScreenshotAPI turns a web page or supplied HTML into an image through a hosted API. Its homepage shows examples in JavaScript, Python, Java, and curl; the API reference documents a POST endpoint at the ScreenshotAPI v1.0 screenshot reference. The reference says a request can provide a URL or raw HTML and authenticate with an API key. The homepage also gives the example endpoint https://api.screenshotapi.com/take. Confirm the current endpoint and request schema in the reference before wiring it into production.

This is a developer service, not a desktop screenshot application. It is suited to workflows that need repeatable captures from code, such as generating previews or retaining visual snapshots. Its documented request controls are useful, but the reviewed official pages do not establish a dated performance benchmark, service-level commitment, or India-specific latency result.

How to request a screenshot

Request model and response modes

The reference describes a POST request with an API key and either a target URL or raw HTML. It documents two response modes: JSON, containing metadata and base64 image data, and redirect, which returns the image directly. Check the current reference for the exact parameter names, credential placement, and response handling before using the example endpoint. The reference’s generated example sections may depend on dynamic page loading, so do not assume a particular SDK is fully supported based only on marketing examples.

Endpoint formats and rendering controls

For the documented endpoint, the reference lists PNG and JPEG. ScreenshotAPI’s homepage and pricing FAQ also advertise GIF, but that format is not enumerated in the endpoint reference; confirm GIF availability for your specific endpoint and account before relying on it.

Documented controls include:

  • Viewport width and height, device emulation, and device scale factor.
  • Waiting for navigation events or a CSS selector, plus an added delay.
  • Full-page capture, scrolling to trigger lazy-loaded content, and clipping.
  • Transparent PNG background and custom CSS.
  • Popup blocking and cookie-banner dismissal.

These options let an application target a particular page state rather than taking an immediate, fixed-size capture. Their presence does not establish how every site will behave; test with the same scripts, consent interface, and responsive layout your own workload encounters.

Pricing, free usage, and billing terms

ScreenshotAPI’s pricing page advertises pay-as-you-go pricing at $0.001 per screenshot and lists larger packs at lower unit rates. Those are vendor-listed dollar prices, not INR quotes. The pricing page also says its posted prices exclude relevant local taxes.

25,000 screenshots $22 $0.00088
50,000 screenshots $40 $0.0008
100,000 screenshots $80 $0.0008

Pack prices and quantities are those advertised by ScreenshotAPI on its pricing page; verify that they still apply at checkout. The page’s main copy says there are no subscriptions, but its FAQ refers to changing plans. That difference makes it worth checking whether a purchase is a one-time pack, a recurring charge, or subject to other terms before integrating billing assumptions into an application.

Is ScreenshotAPI free?

The official pricing page is inconsistent about the free allowance: the headline and main copy say 100 free shots, while a signup button and the footer say 1,000. Neither number should be treated as settled. Verify the allowance in the signup flow or account dashboard before estimating a trial or production budget.

ScreenshotAPI’s pricing FAQ states: “A screenshot is counted when a successful image has been taken.” It also says failed screenshots caused by a server interruption or webpage load failure are not charged against the quota. Check the current terms for how other failures, retries, and packs are handled.

What Indian buyers should check

The service’s terms of service identify the provider as a Delaware LLC, exclude relevant local taxes from posted prices, and make customers responsible for assessing regulatory suitability. The reviewed official material does not establish INR pricing, India-specific payment methods, data residency, India support hours, or eligibility details. Before purchase, check the checkout currency and total, applicable taxes, available payment methods, and any compliance or data-location requirements that apply to your use case. Do not infer a rupee total from the displayed dollar amounts without a current exchange rate and fees.

Where ScreenshotAPI fits—and what remains uncertain

ScreenshotAPI’s documented controls make it a plausible option when an application needs programmable captures with explicit viewport, waiting, scrolling, clipping, or CSS settings. The official pages reviewed do not provide a dated benchmark, an SLA figure, an independent reliability result, or India-specific latency measurements. General speed or availability language is not enough to predict how quickly your own pages will render from your users’ locations.

Before committing, run a representative trial against the pages and states your workload actually captures. Record render success, completion time, output format, and the effect of waits or cookie controls from the region and network path relevant to your application. For a provider comparison, use the same URLs, viewport/device profiles, and expected output across services; compare error handling, failed-render billing, usage limits, total monthly cost, payment and tax clarity, and documented security and service terms rather than assuming one is faster.

Errors and implementation checks

The API reference lists HTTP 400 for invalid parameters and 401 for a missing or invalid API key. Handle these separately from page-render failures: a 400 generally calls for correcting the request, while a 401 calls for checking credential presence and validity. Inspect the response body and current reference for the exact error details before designing automated retries.

  • 400 response: Check the URL or HTML input, parameter names, supported format, and values against the current reference. Avoid retrying an unchanged invalid request.
  • 401 response: Confirm that the API key is present and valid, and that it is being sent where the reference expects it. Keep credentials out of browser code and public repositories.
  • Page fails to load: The pricing FAQ says server-interruption and webpage-load failures are not charged against quota. Log the target URL and response details, then retry only where doing so is safe for your workload.
  • Capture is incomplete or in the wrong state: Adjust the documented wait condition, selector, delay, viewport, full-page or lazy-load behavior, and CSS as appropriate; confirm the page has reached the intended state before interpreting the image.
  • GIF is required: Since the endpoint reference lists PNG and JPEG while broader marketing mentions GIF, confirm the endpoint and account support GIF before building a dependency on it.

ScreenshotNeo: an alternative to try first

For developers comparing screenshot APIs, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a paid plan starting at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Its API also reports whether a result was a clean shot, bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit through response headers.

ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot endpoint and an MCP server for AI agents, with tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. Every plan includes every feature. Its free plan provides 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans are Starter at $5 for 3,000, Growth at $15 for 15,000, Pro at $39 for 60,000, Scale at $99 for 250,000, and Business at $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for current request details.

One GET request can return an image. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.
