ScreenshotAPI.net documents PNG as its default screenshot format. Choose PNG for crisp text and transparency, JPEG/JPG for smaller lossy images, WebP for efficient web delivery where supported, and PDF when the capture needs document-style pages. Set file_type to choose the file; set output separately to choose whether the API returns the file directly or a JSON response with a hosted URL and metadata.
Choose a format for the job
| Format | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Text-heavy pages, interface captures, visual QA, and images that need transparency | Lossless detail and sharp edges can mean larger files, especially for photo-heavy pages. |
| JPEG/JPG | Thumbnails, previews, and cases where smaller files matter more than perfect detail | Lossy compression can soften small text and interface edges. |
| WebP | Web delivery or storage when the receiving tools support it | Some older tools may handle WebP less consistently than PNG or JPG. |
| Reports, printable exports, archives, or captures that need page layout | Pagination, paper size, and orientation matter; PDF is a document format, not another raster image encoding. |
These are ScreenshotAPI.net’s documented use cases, not independently measured file-size or visual-quality benchmarks. The service’s File Type & Quality guide describes PNG as the default and says the file-type parameter defines the output format.

Set the file format separately from the response mode
Use file_type to request PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The separate output setting controls how the result is delivered: the Playground describes IMAGE as returning the file in the response body and JSON as returning an object with a hosted URL and metadata. JSON is a response mode, not an image format.

Configure quality, resolution, and transparency
JPEG quality
The documented image_quality parameter applies to JPG/JPEG and ranges from 0 to 100, with 80 as the documented default. Lower values trade image detail for smaller output. The guide says this parameter does not affect PNG, WebP, or PDF; check the live documentation for current accepted values.
Retina density
The retina option requests higher pixel density, described by the vendor as 2×. The documentation warns that this can increase file size and processing time, so use it when sharper output is worth those costs.

Background removal
omit_background is documented for PNG only, and only where a simple white or solid background can be removed. It is not a general transparency control for every format.
Account for PDF page layout
PDF output has document-specific controls, including paper format, portrait or landscape orientation, and page range. According to the PDF guide, omitting both paper format and dimensions can produce one long PDF page without page breaks. Set the page layout to suit printing, reading, or archiving instead of assuming a screenshot will be paginated automatically.
Request and cache considerations
The getting-started documentation says requests can use GET or POST and that fresh=true can request a current capture when a prior screenshot might otherwise come from cache. Confirm the current endpoint reference and parameter behavior before relying on these details: API syntax, supported formats, and defaults can change. The reviewed official material does not establish quantified size savings, visual-quality scores, or independent format benchmarks.
If you are selecting a screenshot service rather than only choosing a format, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative: it removes known consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.

ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
For example, request a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options, then sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
