Check the exact error identifier in the API response first: ScreenshotAPI.net documents a missing token as 401, not one of its three 403 causes. Also check whether the 403 is actually a forbidden page rendered by the destination website rather than an API error.
First, identify which 403 you are seeing
ScreenshotAPI.net documents three conditions that can produce a 403: screenshots_limit_reached, trial_expired, and ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED. Read the response body and headers and record the exact error identifier before changing your request or account. The documented v3 request format is GET https://shot.screenshotapi.net/v3/screenshot?token=TOKEN&url=URL&[OPTIONS]. See the official error reference and rendering instructions.
- If the response identifies
screenshots_limit_reached, investigate monthly usage and plan quota. - If it identifies
trial_expired, investigate trial or subscription status. - If it identifies
ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED, investigate destination availability and network or firewall refusal. - If the API returns an image showing a forbidden page, determine whether the destination site itself denied access.
What does screenshots_limit_reached mean?
The account has reached its available monthly screenshot quota. ScreenshotAPI.net’s help page recommends increasing the available quota through a plan upgrade. Check the account’s usage and quota in the dashboard, then upgrade if you need additional capacity. The same provider documents requests-per-minute overages as HTTP 429, so a 403 with this identifier is not the same as a rate-per-minute limit.
What should I do if the trial expired?
trial_expired means the provider considers the trial period over. Check the account’s trial or subscription state and follow the provider’s upgrade path if you need continued service. If the dashboard indicates an active eligible plan while the response still reports an expired trial, ask ScreenshotAPI.net support to confirm the account status.

What if the target connection was refused?
ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED points to a connection problem reaching the destination, rather than the documented quota or trial conditions. A refusal may relate to the target being unavailable or to network or firewall policy. A proxy might be relevant in some network situations, but the provider’s documentation does not promise it will resolve every refusal.
- Verify the target URL, including its scheme, hostname, and path.
- Open the URL independently and check whether the destination is currently reachable.
- Consider whether the target’s firewall or network policy may refuse connections from the capture service.
- If using a proxy is an option in your setup, treat it as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
Is this an API error or the website’s own 403 page?
A screenshot service can report a problem with its own request, or it can successfully capture a page that the destination site has forbidden. Inspect the response body, headers, and returned image. If the image itself contains an access-denial page, check its branding and page content: that can be the target site’s response rather than an account denial from ScreenshotAPI.net.

Cloudflare explains that an unbranded 403 is generally returned by the origin server, while a Cloudflare-branded 403 can result from edge security controls such as WAF rules, security settings, DDoS protection, or browser integrity checks. If the captured page appears to be the target’s denial screen, contact the site owner or administrator; changing ScreenshotAPI credentials will not grant access to a page the target refuses to serve. Should I check the API token?
Check that the request includes the token and that it is the current key, but do not assume a 403 means the key is invalid. ScreenshotAPI.net lists a missing token as 401, and its documented 403 explanations are the three identifiers above. The token is managed in the provider dashboard. Rotating a key issues a fresh key and revokes the old one, so update every integration using the old key after rotation. See the provider’s request and credential guidance.

What if the target requires login?
A target site’s login requirement is separate from ScreenshotAPI.net’s trial and quota status. The provider’s help explains that custom cookies can be supplied for cookie-authenticated pages. Use cookies only for accounts and pages you are authorized to access, and distinguish a captured login or access-denial page from an API-level error. No. Its error reference lists a missing token as 401; check the returned error identifier to diagnose a 403.
Is a target website’s 403 the same as ScreenshotAPI.net returning 403?
No. A screenshot may show a denial page served by the destination even when the capture request itself succeeded.
