You can run an unattended YouTube radio-style stream from a Linux server by using Liquidsoap to schedule audio, FFmpeg to encode a video-and-audio feed, and systemd to supervise the foreground process. The server sends that feed directly to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS; Icecast is optional and is needed only if you also want a conventional internet-radio endpoint.
How the setup fits together
Liquidsoap selects and schedules audio files; its YouTube output can use FFmpeg encoding to send an audiovisual stream to YouTube Live. systemd starts the process at boot and can restart it if the local process exits. YouTube then presents the live stream on its platform.

A “radio station” here describes the programming style, not an audio-only encoder workflow: the YouTube destination receives a live audiovisual feed. A fixed image or gently changing visual can accompany the audio, but choose and test the visual setup for your own production.
Icecast has a different role. It serves audio to listeners through a station URL or compatible player; it is not a required relay between Liquidsoap and YouTube. The Icecast documentation says it can be used to create “an Internet radio station or a privately running jukebox and many things in between.”

| Option | Listener destination | Server role | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live encoder output | A YouTube watch page | Linux sends an encoded live feed to YouTube using RTMP/RTMPS | You want a YouTube live stream |
| Icecast endpoint | A radio player or directory using your station URL | Icecast serves source audio to listeners; Liquidsoap can provide the source | You also want a conventional internet-radio stream |
What you need before configuring the server
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder workflow. Allow for that before scheduling a launch.
- A Linux host with sustained outbound capacity. The server must continuously upload the encoded feed at its chosen bitrate. A Linux VPS is an option if you do not have an always-on machine, but you still need to administer the server and verify its network capacity.
- Liquidsoap and an FFmpeg-enabled build. Confirm that the installed versions support the YouTube output and codecs you intend to use. Configuration syntax can vary by version.
- Audio files and a programming plan. Liquidsoap can build a stream from folders and playlists. Prepare representative material and test transitions, levels, and playback before going live.
- Permission to broadcast your material. Clear rights for the audio and any visual material in the territories where you plan to broadcast. The requirements depend on the actual rights holders, catalog, and territories; no single licensing rule can be assumed for every station.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow in Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use. YouTube’s interface labels can change, so follow the current encoder workflow at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. YouTube explains: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- Provide the URL and key to Liquidsoap’s YouTube RTMP output configuration. Never publish the key in a script repository, paste it into public logs, or share it as if it were an ordinary URL: it is the credential that lets an encoder send to your stream.
- If the key is exposed, reset it through YouTube Live Control Room and update the server configuration. YouTube’s live encoder settings page describes stream settings and key management.
A community Ubuntu VPS example also demonstrates a looped playlist, FFmpeg, and systemd, but an individual implementation is not evidence of guaranteed uptime or a universal configuration. Use the official Liquidsoap guidance and test your own installation.
Choose YouTube ingest and encoder settings
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS for encoder ingest and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted option. Its supported video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; for RTMP/RTMPS audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For an H.264 setup, configure constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
| H.264 output example | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular server or connection can sustain the rate. The figures are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, accessed in 2026; check the current settings table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you select. Leave upload headroom for fluctuations rather than treating a minimum as a safe target.

YouTube’s advanced recommendations include stereo audio at a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps stereo audio bitrate. Test representative audio and motion, then monitor the stream-health indicators in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring stream health; passing an initial test does not prove that an unstable connection will hold up unattended.
Configure Liquidsoap and test it in the foreground
Liquidsoap’s production guide recommends running the process in the foreground under a service manager. Its site documents output.youtube.live.rtmp with an FFmpeg H.264/AAC example. Treat the output syntax as version-sensitive: adapt the example to your installed Liquidsoap and FFmpeg builds, and use the YouTube URL and key supplied for your stream.
Do not place a real stream key in sample commands or public source control. If the configuration file contains the key, restrict its file and directory permissions to the service account and administrators who need access.

- Build a minimal Liquidsoap configuration that loads your playlist or audio source, supplies the video component needed for an audiovisual YouTube feed, and encodes using settings compatible with YouTube ingest.
- Check the configuration with the installed version’s validation command:
liquidsoap --check /etc/liquidsoap/radio.liq. Resolve syntax or missing-plugin errors before starting the service. - Run Liquidsoap in the foreground for an initial test. Confirm that audio and video reach the intended YouTube stream, inspect stream health, and listen for levels, gaps, or unwanted transitions.
- Stop the test process before enabling the systemd unit, so two encoders do not compete to send to the same stream.
Run the stream under systemd
Liquidsoap’s production guide states: “In production, run liquidsoap in the foreground under a service manager, such as systemd on Linux or launchd on macOS.” The following minimal unit follows its documented pattern; adjust the executable and configuration paths and ensure the liquidsoap account can read the configuration and media.

systemd captures standard output in the journal by default. Restart=always can bring back a process that exits, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery: network, YouTube, stream-key, content, or encoder faults may persist after a restart and require diagnosis.

Keep the stream operational
- Test the actual workload. Use representative audio and video rather than a silent or unusually simple test file.
- Check the outgoing connection. Verify sustained upload capacity against the configured video and audio bitrate, with room for variation.
- Monitor YouTube stream health. An active systemd service alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Inspect the journal after failures. Use
journalctl -u radioto look for Liquidsoap, encoder, file-access, and connection errors. - Account for stream lifecycle. Stopping the encoder stops sending content. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours, according to its encoder workflow accessed in 2026; check the current YouTube documentation for any workflow changes.
- Revalidate after edits and updates. Run
liquidsoap --check /etc/liquidsoap/radio.liqafter configuration changes and confirm that your current Liquidsoap output syntax still matches the installed version.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded recordings rather than a Linux radio stack you manage yourself, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, and there is no need to keep a PC, OBS, or home connection running.
Every slot streams uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
