A screenshot recording app captures either a still image or a video of what is on your screen. Start with your device’s built-in tool for a straightforward capture; consider a separate app when you need features such as a webcam overlay, annotations, editing, or shareable links. The right choice depends on your device, operating system, and where you want the recording stored.
Choose a capture tool by what you need to record
“Screenshot” usually means a still image, while screen recording means video. Some tools handle both. Before installing anything, decide whether you need a still, a video, or both; whether you need narration or system audio; and whether the result should remain a local file or be shared as a hosted link.

- One-off image or quiet clip: A built-in tool is often sufficient.
- Narrated tutorial or walkthrough: Look for microphone support and, if useful, a webcam overlay or touch/cursor indicators.
- Polished or shareable output: Check for trimming, annotation, captions, export formats, and link-sharing controls.
- Sensitive content: Confirm capture restrictions and how the app stores, processes, and shares recordings before recording.

Windows 11: Snipping Tool
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool supports still captures in freeform, rectangular, window, and full-screen modes, as well as video of a rectangular screen selection. Use Win+Shift+S for image capture or Win+Shift+R to open the video capture overlay. Microsoft describes recording as a Windows 11 Snipping Tool feature introduced in 2023; check your installed app and Windows version, especially if you are using Windows 10. The product also supports annotation, saving, and sharing still captures. Microsoft says its OCR text recognition is processed locally on the device; that statement applies to OCR and does not establish how every recording or sharing function handles data. Mac: Screenshot or QuickTime Player
On Mac, Apple documents screen capture through the Screenshot toolbar or QuickTime Player. QuickTime can record the whole display or a selected area, and lets you choose a microphone for voice or other audio. Recordings can save to the desktop by default. Some apps restrict capture: Apple notes that apps such as Apple TV may not allow their windows to be recorded. For supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple lists SDR/H.264 and HDR/HEVC capture choices; check Apple’s current instructions and your Mac’s compatibility before relying on those format options. iPhone: Control Center
Start a recording from Control Center and turn on the microphone there if you want narration. The recording saves automatically to Photos. Some apps may block recording, and iPhone cannot record the screen while screen mirroring is active. Apple’s iPhone screen-recording instructions

Compare apps before you record
- Device and OS: Check the exact operating system version, whether the tool supports mobile or desktop, and whether it runs in a browser or needs installation.
- Capture target: Confirm whether it captures a still, full display, window, or selected region. Do not assume a screen recorder supports scrolling screenshots.
- Audio and presenter: Check for microphone and system audio, webcam overlay, and touch or cursor indicators. A separate microphone is optional; the cited platform instructions describe microphone recording without establishing that an external USB mic is necessary.
- Editing and output: Look for the specific annotation, redaction, trimming, transcript, caption, and export features your task requires. Check whether the output is a file or hosted link.
- Privacy and sharing: Find out whether recordings are stored locally or uploaded, who can access a shared link, and whether retention or access controls meet your needs. Attribute privacy assurances to the vendor rather than treating them as independent audits.
- Limits and cost: Check current account requirements, watermarks, duration and resolution limits, and subscription or license terms. These can change, so rely on current product terms rather than old comparison pages.
Record safely and troubleshoot restrictions
- Check permission and destination: Decide what needs to appear in the recording, close unrelated private material, and confirm where the resulting file will be saved or shared.
- Set up audio before starting: Choose the microphone or audio options if narration is needed. Make a short test recording and play it back to check that the intended sound was captured.
- If capture is blocked, check the app and mode: Some apps restrict recording. On iPhone, screen recording also cannot run simultaneously with screen mirroring. Follow the platform or app’s permitted sharing options rather than trying to bypass a restriction.
- Review before sharing: Watch the clip or inspect the still for sensitive notifications, account details, or unintended audio. If using a hosted link, check its access settings before sending it.
