Short answer: a hosted screenshot API can reduce the browser infrastructure and operational work your team owns, but it adds a usage bill. Running headless Chrome yourself gives you more control over where captures run, while making you responsible for deployment, scaling, updates, reliability, and—in some cases—a commercial license. There is no universal break-even volume: compare both options against the same workload, operating period, and staffing assumptions.
What changes when you use a screenshot API?
A hosted API lets your application request a capture over HTTP without your team directly provisioning and operating the browser service. For example, Browserless documents a REST POST /screenshot endpoint that accepts a URL and optional Puppeteer-style screenshot options and returns an image. Its documented options include full-page capture and PNG, JPEG, or WebP output. See the Browserless screenshot API documentation and REST API overview.

This trades browser-fleet operations for a vendor bill and dependence on the hosted service. The cost may depend on how long each browser connection runs, not simply how many images you request.
Browserless pricing example
As listed on Browserless’s pricing page when accessed in 2026, its prototyping plan costs $25 per month. The page defines a unit as up to 30 seconds of browser time per connection; longer sessions consume additional units, and reconnects are charged as new browser connections. It also lists separate unit charges for proxy traffic and successful CAPTCHA solving. These are vendor plan terms, not market averages, and should be rechecked before purchase. Do not treat one unit as equivalent to one screenshot: page duration, reconnects, proxies, and other features can change consumption. See Browserless pricing.

What running headless Chrome yourself changes
Self-hosting moves browser sessions into infrastructure you control, which can help with data-location requirements or air-gapped deployments. It also makes your team responsible for deploying the service, maintaining browser versions, handling capacity, and responding to failures.
Browserless deployment scope and licensing
Browserless’s open-source Docker image includes Chromium, Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Edge images; Puppeteer and Playwright connectivity; core REST APIs including screenshots; session management; health checks; and a debugger UI. The deployment page says the image is available for amd64 and arm64, while Chrome and Edge are limited to amd64. Check the open-source image and deployment documentation for current edition details.

Browserless states: “The open-source image is free under SSPL-1.0 and a good fit for open-source projects, prototyping, and evaluation.” The same documentation says building a closed-source commercial product or running a closed-source CI system requires a commercial license. “Free” therefore does not mean free commercial use in every scenario; check the license terms for your intended use. The vendor’s open-source image also does not necessarily include features offered by its cloud or licensed enterprise options, such as advanced APIs, stealth or CAPTCHA solving, and session recording.

Deployment resources are starting points, not sizing guarantees
For its enterprise image, Browserless gives a minimum of 2 CPU cores and 4 GB RAM. Its guide warns that Docker’s default 64 MB shared-memory allocation can cause Chrome crashes or instability under load and recommends increasing it for production. These are vendor-specific starting points, not a capacity guarantee for a particular page mix or concurrency level. See Browserless’s Docker deployment guidance.

Compare total cost for the same workload
Set one time period—such as a month or year—and model both choices against the same page mix, capture volume, peak concurrency, and reliability requirements. A useful comparison includes more than the price of a plan or virtual machine.
| Cost or constraint | Hosted API | Self-hosted browser service |
|---|---|---|
| Direct service or compute cost | Plan fee, connection-time units, reconnects, overages, and any required proxy or CAPTCHA charges. Browserless’s unit terms are described on its pricing page. | Compute, memory, storage, and network, plus any commercial license required for the use case. Browserless documents operator responsibility for scaling and updates in its deployment guide. |
| Engineering and operations | Less direct browser-fleet provisioning and maintenance; the vendor manages the hosted browser service. | Deployment, browser upgrades, monitoring, load balancing, incident response, and ongoing maintenance are yours to plan and staff. |
| Steady and peak concurrency | Assess plan limits, queueing, scaling behavior, and the cost of usage during bursts. Browserless describes automatic scaling and load balancing as managed-service features on its pricing page. | Provision enough capacity for peaks or accept queues and delays. Browserless’s self-hosted image documents configurable concurrency and queueing; actual capacity depends on your deployment. See the open-source documentation. |
| Privacy and network boundary | Determine whether browser traffic and captured pages may leave your organization’s infrastructure. | Offers control over where sessions run; Browserless positions self-hosting for data-residency and air-gapped needs. Verify your own network and storage design. |
| Features and licensing | Verify browser options, proxies, anti-bot features, session handling, and API behavior included in the plan you need. | Confirm the self-hosted edition includes each required feature and that its license permits your intended deployment. |
Build a workload-specific estimate
For the hosted side, estimate connection time and reconnects from observed captures, then include the plan, overages, and optional services the workload actually needs. A screenshot count alone is not enough if captures vary in duration.

For self-hosting, price the resources and network you expect to use, then include engineering and operations effort, incident response, upgrades, monitoring, and any license. Account for spare capacity needed to absorb peaks: capacity that sits idle still has a cost, while undersizing may create queueing or timeouts.

The reviewed vendor materials do not establish an apples-to-apples self-hosted cost or a workload-based break-even point. Use measured durations and your own infrastructure and staffing costs rather than assuming a volume at which self-hosting always becomes cheaper.

A hosted API is a better fit when
- You need to request screenshots over HTTP and do not want to operate a browser fleet directly.
- Your team values vendor-managed scaling and can budget for usage that varies with connection duration and related features.
- You have verified that the hosted service’s plan and capabilities meet your concurrency, privacy, and feature needs.
Self-hosting is a better fit when
- You need control over where browser sessions and resulting data run.
- You can own deployment, upgrades, scaling, monitoring, and production incidents.
- The self-hosted feature set and license terms match your use, including any closed-source commercial product or CI requirements.
Neither choice is automatically cheaper or more reliable for every workload. Compare the full operating cost and confirm the actual edition’s features before committing; vendor feature sets and plan terms can change.
ScreenshotNeo as an alternative to evaluate first
If you want a hosted screenshot API without setting up a browser service, ScreenshotNeo is another option to evaluate: it removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. Its API returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from a GET request. Confirm that its behavior, options, and pricing fit your workload.
Or skip the browser setup
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the URL with the page you need and provide your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request and options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does one Browserless pricing unit equal one screenshot?
No. Browserless defines a unit by browser connection time, and a capture’s duration, reconnects, proxy traffic, or CAPTCHA solving can affect consumption.
Is Browserless’s self-hosted image free for any commercial use?
No. Browserless says closed-source commercial products and closed-source CI systems require a commercial license; check the current license terms for your use.
