Can YouTube Live Stream 4K 60fps HDR Videos from a Playlist?

Yes—YouTube Live supports 4K (2160p) at 60 fps and HDR, provided your source, encoder, and upload connection can produce and sustain a compatible stream. But a regular YouTube playlist is a collection of videos, not a documented live-encoder input. To broadcast several clips as one live program, play them through a compatible production setup and send that program feed to YouTube Live.

What “from a playlist” means

A YouTube playlist groups videos for playback. YouTube’s encoder workflow instead takes a live program feed from an encoder; its documentation does not describe selecting an ordinary YouTube playlist as that feed. In practice, you need a playback or production system that plays the clips in sequence and outputs them to an encoder, which then sends the resulting stream to YouTube. YouTube’s guidance covers creating a live stream with an encoder and managing video playlists separately: Create and manage playlists and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

This distinction matters for HDR: the encoder receives the program you produce, not the playlist object. The clips and playback chain must preserve compatible HDR video and metadata all the way to the encoder.

What a 4K60 HDR stream requires

Compatible HDR video and metadata

YouTube’s HDR live-stream guidance calls for HEVC video, 10-bit output, and color metadata that matches the source: BT.2020 with either PQ (ST 2084) or HLG transfer characteristics. The encoder and the playback or capture path must support those properties; an HDR label on a source file alone does not establish that the final output is correctly encoded. YouTube documents OBS with a supported hardware HEVC encoder as one software-encoder option. Its guide recommends HLG for the documented OBS setup: Stream HDR video on YouTube.

Encoder settings and protocol

YouTube supports RTMP(S) and HLS for HDR ingest. For its documented OBS HDR configuration, the settings include a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space. Match the transfer setting to the HDR source and the capabilities of the complete chain rather than choosing a color mode the source did not produce. For HDR, YouTube says to leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked. See YouTube’s HDR setup instructions.

HLS is a valid alternative when your encoder supports it, but it has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. These are requirements for an HLS ingest implementation, not settings to apply to an ordinary YouTube video playlist: Set up an HLS stream.

Bitrate and upload capacity

YouTube’s published encoder settings for 2160p60 list 10–40 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), and a recommended 35 Mbps for H.264. These are YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular encoder, internet connection, or viewer will sustain 4K60 HDR. Choose a bitrate your encoder can maintain and your upload connection can reliably carry, with headroom for normal network variation. YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for viewers on different devices and networks. Check the current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and test the stream before broadcasting.

Choose the production path for your source

  • Pre-recorded clips: Use a playback or production system to assemble and play the sequence, then output that program to an HDR-capable encoder. Confirm that the software, hardware, and connections preserve 10-bit HEVC and the correct color metadata.
  • HDR game output: Capture or route the game’s HDR output through a compatible production and encoding chain. The source, capture path, and encoder all need to support the target format.
  • HDR camera: Use a camera that produces PQ or HLG HDR and an ingest path that can preserve it. A capture card may help when bringing an external HDMI camera or console into a computer, but YouTube does not make one a universal requirement.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to create a live stream and connect an encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Check the actual output format at each handoff; a 4K-capable connection or capture device does not by itself confirm 60 fps, HDR, or correct color metadata.

What viewers will see

YouTube says supported devices receive HDR automatically; other devices receive SDR. An SDR fallback is therefore expected for viewers whose devices do not support HDR. The Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, so the preview alone cannot confirm how HDR will look to viewers. For a pre-broadcast check, verify the encoder’s output and test playback on a supported HDR device, rather than judging HDR color from the preview alone. See Stream HDR video on YouTube.

Pre-stream checks and common problems

  • The playlist will not appear as an encoder source: That is the distinction between a YouTube playlist and a live program feed. Play the clips through a production system and send its output to the encoder.
  • The stream is not recognized as HDR: Check that the source is HDR, the encoder uses HEVC Main 10 and P010 where required by the documented setup, and BT.2020 plus the correct PQ or HLG metadata matches the source.
  • 4K60 drops frames or becomes unstable: Check encoder load and sustained upload capacity at the chosen bitrate. Reduce the output settings if the setup cannot maintain them; YouTube’s listed bitrate is guidance, not a guarantee of connection performance.
  • The preview looks like SDR: YouTube’s Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors. Confirm the encoding and metadata, then assess playback on an HDR-capable device.
  • HLS has more delay than expected: HLS has higher latency than RTMP in YouTube’s guidance because it sends segments. Consider RTMP(S) if lower latency is important and your encoder supports it.
  • An external source will not enter the computer: Check the source’s output format and compatibility with the capture hardware and computer. A capture card is relevant for an external HDMI source, not a required purchase for every HDR stream.
