For hundreds of URLs, choose a screenshot API if you want a managed capture interface and its current controls, limits, and data terms meet your needs. Choose Puppeteer if you need to own browser automation and its runtime. Neither option is proven universally faster, cheaper, or more reliable: benchmark both against the same URL list and capture requirements before committing.
What changes when you capture hundreds of URLs?
The task is not just taking a screenshot repeatedly. You need to decide how pages are opened and judged ready, how work is scheduled, what happens when a page fails, and where the output goes. A hosted API packages at least some browser work behind a service interface; with Puppeteer, your team runs the browser workflow and must build the surrounding job and storage process.

The available documentation establishes Puppeteer’s browser and screenshot controls, but not a production architecture or a throughput figure. Likewise, a service may offer batch capture, but you must confirm the chosen provider’s current documentation rather than assume that batch size, concurrency, retries, or a service-level commitment is available.

Controls and lifecycle details
Puppeteer’s screenshot options include full-page capture, clipping, image type, encoding, quality, and capture beyond the viewport. Check the ScreenshotOptions API for the exact supported options for your installed version. The Page API also documents that some page creation and closing operations wait while a screenshot is being taken in the same BrowserContext. Account for that behavior when designing page reuse and concurrency rather than assuming every page operation can overlap freely; see the Page API.

What you own
Puppeteer supplies browser automation, not a ready-made bulk processing system. For a repeatable job, your implementation needs to decide how to queue URLs, cap concurrent pages, retry transient failures, name and store outputs, log failed captures, and resume or rerun work. Those choices depend on your workload and infrastructure; the Puppeteer guide does not prescribe a production design.
What a hosted screenshot API changes
A hosted service can take browser capture operations out of your application’s runtime, but capabilities vary by provider. Before sending a large job, verify the current documentation for supported capture controls, batch size, concurrency, queueing, retries, response formats, failure reporting, retention, and price. Also check how it handles authenticated URLs or other sensitive inputs.
One informal project post describes a service with single and batch screenshots, but that is an individual implementation claim, not verified documentation for the market or a provider commitment. It does not establish present capacity, options, SLA, or price.

No cited benchmark establishes how long hundreds of URLs take with either approach under a defined workload. There is also no general concurrency limit, price comparison, or comparative reliability result established here. Page complexity, readiness criteria, output size, network conditions, concurrency, and storage can all affect the result, so measure with your own representative pages instead of relying on an unsupported screenshots-per-minute estimate.
For an occasional job, a managed API may reduce setup work if its current features and data terms fit. For a recurring pipeline requiring custom navigation or precise browser control, Puppeteer gives you a documented automation path while leaving runtime ownership with your team. Troubleshooting a hundreds-of-URLs capture job
Navigation times out
A page may be slow, unreachable, or continuously active. Check the URL and network path, then choose a timeout and readiness condition appropriate to the page. Test whether waiting for a narrower page-specific selector is more reliable than waiting for network idleness.
The screenshot is blank or missing content
Navigation completion does not necessarily mean client-rendered content or lazy-loaded images are ready. Inspect the page state and define a suitable wait condition before capture. For repeatable jobs, make sure the capture environment and browser version are controlled.
Some captures fail only at higher concurrency
Do not assume that more parallel pages always improve completion time. Reduce concurrency and compare outcomes; check browser resource use, target-site behavior, network constraints, and any provider limits. No universal safe concurrency value is established by the documentation cited here.
Outputs differ between runs
Hold operating system, browser version, screenshot settings, hardware, and headless mode steady where possible. Also keep viewport and readiness rules consistent, since these affect what is rendered at capture time.
