What this comparison means
A screenshot API is a request-oriented service: your application sends a URL and capture options to a provider, which returns or delivers an image or document. Features, limits, data handling, regions, and prices vary by provider, so “screenshot API” is not one fixed product.

With Cloud Run and Playwright, you deploy an application and browser setup in a container. Google manages the underlying application platform, while your team controls the Playwright code and containerized workflow. Google documents headless Chromium on Cloud Run and names Playwright and Puppeteer as browser-control libraries, including screenshots as a use case: Google Cloud’s browser and OS automation guide.
Cloudflare Browser Run is one documented managed example, not a proxy for all screenshot APIs. Its documentation describes both simple Quick Actions and Playwright-controlled browser sessions. Check the actual provider you are considering rather than assuming its capabilities match Cloudflare’s.

When a managed screenshot API is the better fit

- The provider’s quotas, concurrency, regions, data handling, and price model meet your production requirements.
- You can use its API contract without needing browser interactions or dependencies it does not support.

- You are prepared to estimate full usage costs and validate memory, startup behavior, and concurrency under your workload.
How to build the Cloud Run option
The minimum architecture is a containerized web application that receives a capture request, launches Chromium through Playwright, navigates to the target page, saves or returns the screenshot, and runs on Cloud Run. Google’s guide covers browser automation and Chromium installation; follow its current deployment instructions for the runtime you select. Keep capture logic and HTTP request handling separate enough to apply timeouts, input validation, and access controls.
Choose capture behavior deliberately
Playwright’s screenshot API supports options including target, type, filename, fullPage, and scale. Use a viewport screenshot for the visible browser area, a target for a specific element, or fullPage for a page-length capture. Do not combine fullPage and target. PNG, JPEG, and WebP are documented output types; scale can use CSS pixels or device pixels. See the Playwright screenshots documentation for current syntax and options.

Deployment and workload checks
- Install Chromium and the Playwright version compatible with it in the image; pin and update dependencies deliberately.
- Set request and navigation timeouts that fit your workload, and ensure the application can return a useful error when a page does not load.
- Set CPU and memory based on observed captures, and validate how many browser jobs an instance can safely handle at once.
- Test cold starts and instance scaling with representative pages, including pages with large assets or long-running scripts.
- Restrict which URLs callers can request. An endpoint that browses arbitrary URLs can create security and abuse risks; apply authentication and network controls appropriate to your application.
- Estimate regional compute charges, request charges, outbound internet transfer, and any build or registry services you use. Review the live Cloud Run pricing page before committing to a budget.
How to decide without a misleading price comparison
Do not compare a provider’s per-request headline price with a Cloud Run estimate that omits operations or network costs. Cloud Run’s bill varies with region, CPU and memory allocation, runtime, request volume, billing configuration, and outbound transfer. Minimum instances or companion services may add costs. A managed provider may charge by request, browser time, concurrency, or a combination; Cloudflare, for example, describes Browser Session charges in terms of browser hours and concurrent browsers.
Build an estimate from the same workload on both sides. Record expected capture volume, browser runtime per job, memory and CPU allocation, concurrency, region, egress, minimum-instance settings, and the provider’s current limits and pricing. Include the engineering effort to build, deploy, monitor, and update your own container as an operational consideration, not as an invented per-screenshot fee. Rates and free tiers are volatile; use the live pricing pages for the intended region and plan.

Troubleshooting the Cloud Run approach
Chromium fails to launch
Check that the deployed image includes Chromium and the system dependencies it needs, and that the Playwright package and browser version are compatible. Reproduce the launch inside the same container image rather than relying only on a local development environment.
Captures time out or return incomplete pages
Distinguish navigation completion from the page state your capture actually needs. A page may continue loading assets or rendering after initial navigation. Set an appropriate wait condition and bounded timeout, and test against slow or script-heavy pages. Do not treat a longer timeout as a fix for every failed request.

Instances run out of memory or handle too few jobs
Measure memory and CPU during representative captures. Reduce simultaneous browser work per instance or increase allocated resources, then check the resulting cost and throughput. Autoscaling creates instances; it does not make an individual browser process use less memory.
Costs differ from the estimate
Check the deployed region, resource allocation, request duration, minimum-instance configuration, outbound transfer, and any related services against the estimate. Revisit the live pricing page because rates and free-tier terms may change.
