Fix a screenshot timeout by finding which deadline expired, then waiting for the page condition the image actually needs. A screenshot request can time out during the API connection, navigation, a selector or other readiness wait, screenshot generation, or the overall request. Increasing one timeout will not help if a different boundary is failing.
Find the timeout boundary first
Record the exact error and elapsed time. Then identify the stage that failed: connecting to the API, navigating to the target, waiting for content, capturing the image, or exceeding the request’s total deadline. If the provider exposes separate timeout settings, inspect each one; changing a navigation timeout does not necessarily change the overall request limit.

- Failure before navigation: Check connectivity, authentication, service limits, and the provider’s request cap. A missing or invalid Browserless token, for example, can produce HTTP 401; that is an authentication error, not a slow-page timeout. See Browserless request and error documentation.
- Navigation timeout: The selected navigation milestone may be too demanding for the site.
- Selector or readiness timeout: The page may have navigated, but the expected content did not appear or the selector is wrong.
- Overall request timeout: The combined navigation, readiness waits, and screenshot work may exceed the outer deadline.
Choose a navigation milestone that fits the capture
Navigation completion and screenshot readiness are different. A client-rendered page can finish its initial navigation before the content you need exists. Playwright offers four navigation milestones: commit means the response arrived and document loading started; domcontentloaded means the DOM content event fired; load means the load event fired; and networkidle means there were no network connections for at least 500 ms. Playwright discourages using networkidle as a general readiness test; prefer a concrete assertion or signal instead. See Playwright’s page navigation documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use the least restrictive milestone that still provides a usable document, then wait separately for the element or state that matters to the screenshot. If an image can be captured once the document commits and a report heading appears, waiting for every network request to stop can be unnecessary. Conversely, a selector wait cannot help if the page never navigated successfully.

Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' before taking a screenshot. Treat that as an example, not a universal requirement: persistent polling or streaming can prevent a network-idle condition even when the visible page is ready. See Puppeteer’s screenshot guide.
Wait for the content, not an arbitrary number of seconds
For asynchronously rendered pages, wait for a stable, meaningful signal: the main content container, a report title, or a known loaded-state element. Browserless documents selector waits with their own timeout, as well as function and event waits. Playwright recommends locator actions and web assertions that wait for conditions automatically instead of fixed sleeps in production code. See Browserless wait options and Playwright’s page API.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
A fixed delay is a fallback when no reliable readiness signal is available. It adds that delay to every request, yet still cannot guarantee readiness when a response takes longer than expected. Do not use a larger sleep to mask a selector that never appears or a navigation that is failing.

Budget the outer deadline for all inner work
Set the total request deadline to accommodate navigation, the content-readiness wait, and image generation. Browserless says its query timeout applies to the full request, including waits. Its documentation illustrates a 60,000 ms total timeout, 30,000 ms navigation wait, 10,000 ms selector wait, and 2,000 ms fixed wait; those figures are examples, not universal recommendations. See Browserless timeout documentation.

As a provider-specific example, Browserless documents a 30-second (30,000 ms) default for the BrowserQL screenshot operation’s screenshot.timeout. That value applies to that documented operation; it should not be assumed for another provider, endpoint, or plan. See Browserless BrowserQL screenshot documentation.
Make the inner waits fit inside the outer deadline with enough room for the screenshot operation and response. Avoid assigning every stage the same maximum: if navigation consumes the whole request budget, later waits cannot run. Also avoid making all limits arbitrarily large, which can turn a genuinely stuck page into a long delay before failure.

Check the screenshot API version before changing code
Browserless marks its BaaS v1 /screenshot documentation as deprecated and points users to BaaS v2 or BrowserQL. If an existing integration uses v1, verify the endpoint and payload for that specific version rather than copying an example from a newer API. See Browserless BaaS v1 screenshot documentation and Browserless BrowserQL documentation.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Capture diagnostics. Save the exact error, HTTP status if present, elapsed time, target URL, selected navigation condition, all wait settings, and the overall deadline.
- Separate transport and page errors. If the request never reaches navigation, resolve connectivity, token/authentication, and service-limit issues first.
- Relax navigation only as needed. Try a less restrictive milestone such as
domcontentloadedorcommitif a later event is not required for a usable image. - Add a real readiness condition. Wait for the page element or application state the screenshot needs, and verify that the selector actually exists on the target page.
- Reconcile the timeout budgets. Ensure the total request allows the navigation and readiness waits to complete plus screenshot generation; do not assume changing one timeout changes all others.
- Use a delay only if signals are unavailable. Keep it bounded and account for the extra latency on every request.
- Verify endpoint currency. Confirm that the integration’s API generation and request format are still supported.

FAQ
Why does the screenshot API time out even though the page opens in my browser?
Your browser and the screenshot service may be waiting for different conditions. The API may await a later navigation event, a selector that is not present, or network quiet that the page never reaches. Identify the failed stage and configure the capture around the page’s actual readiness signal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I increase the timeout or use a selector wait?
Use a selector or application-specific signal when the page loads content asynchronously. Increase the relevant timeout only when the condition is correct but legitimately needs longer; also ensure the overall deadline leaves time for later work.
Is network idle always the safest wait condition?
No. Persistent requests can keep a page from becoming idle, and a page can be ready before network activity stops. Prefer a visible element or other meaningful readiness assertion when one is available.
