A 403 Forbidden or 429 Too Many Requests from a screenshot API has no universal cause: providers use these statuses differently, and the status may describe the API request or the page being captured. Start by checking the response body, headers, and provider’s current documentation—not by blindly retrying.
First, identify which request failed
Separate the screenshot API’s HTTP response from the status of the target website. Some services can successfully return an image of a target page that itself ended on a 401 or 403 login or error page. Check whether the provider exposes the target’s final status in a response header or JSON field. Also check the response Content-Type before treating a saved file as an image. A failed API request may return JSON even if your client saved it with a .png or .webp extension. Inspect the status and content type before debugging an image viewer.
Capture the response details before changing anything
Save the HTTP status, request method and endpoint, provider error code, full message and structured details, relevant response headers, request ID if supplied, and timestamp with timezone. Redact API keys, bearer tokens, cookies, passwords, and other secrets before sharing logs or opening a support ticket.

Header names and formats vary by provider. Documentation may specify Retry-After, rate-limit remaining/reset headers, quota headers, or request IDs. Do not assume that two providers use the same header names, units, or meanings; consult the documentation for the exact endpoint and account.
Diagnose a 429: throttling or exhausted quota?
A 429 can represent a temporary request-rate limit, a depleted monthly capture allowance, or another provider-defined condition. Read the machine-readable error code and message, then check the provider dashboard or usage endpoint. Do not assume every 429 will clear after a short wait.
Temporary rate window or burst limit
If the response identifies a rate limit, or documented remaining-request headers show that the current window is exhausted, stop sending requests until the stated delay or reset. Honor Retry-After when present. If the provider documents a reset time, wait for it and interpret the value according to that provider’s documentation.

When no retry interval is supplied and the error is plausibly transient, use bounded exponential backoff with jitter: increase the delay between attempts, add randomness so concurrent clients do not retry together, and cap both the number of retries and total elapsed time. Reduce burst size or concurrency if requests are arriving too quickly. General guidance from GitHub’s REST API troubleshooting documentation and OpenAI’s API rate-limit guidance also recommends using retry information and deliberate backoff.
Monthly quota or account limit
If the response identifies a quota, credit, spending, or usage limit, retries will not replenish the allowance. Check the account’s current usage and reset or billing rules, then pause until reset or take the account action the provider documents. OpenAI’s guidance, updated September 20, 2026, notes that retrying a billing, spending, or quota error does not restore access: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/5955604-how-can-i-solve-429-too-many-requests-errors.
Use the provider’s specific error code
Status codes alone may hide materially different cases. Screenshot API’s documentation lists rate_limited and quota_exceeded as distinct 429 codes, and documents rate-limit and quota headers: https://screenshot-api.org/docs/. Follow the meaning and remediation that provider assigns to the code you actually received.

Diagnose a 403: access problem, quota mapping, or target-page response?
A 403 is not a universal synonym for “bad API key.” Check the response body and determine whether the API endpoint rejected the request or the target page returned an access-denied or login page.

- Confirm the API key is present, current, and associated with the intended account or project.
- Check whether the account is active and whether billing, subscription, spending, or trial status affects access.
- Verify that the key or account is authorized for the specific endpoint and request options.
- Compare the exact error code and message with the provider’s current documentation.
Authentication and permission behavior is provider-specific. Check for provider-specific quota or trial codes
Some screenshot services use 403 for conditions another provider might express differently. ScreenshotAPI.net’s error table maps screenshots_limit_reached and trial_expired to 403, while mapping request-per-minute excess to 429. It lists billing-related 402 errors separately. Check whether the target site blocked or redirected the render
If the API request succeeded but the target page ended in a 401 or 403, the screenshot may faithfully show a login or access-denied page rather than the expected content. Check the target-status field or header if the service provides one. A legitimate authentication requirement or site access policy will not necessarily be fixed by waiting longer; use only access methods you are authorized to use.
Retry only failures that are plausibly temporary
- Read the provider error code and message and classify the failure as transient throttling or a persistent request/account problem.
- If a temporary limit applies, honor
Retry-Afteror the documented reset time. If neither is supplied, use increasing delays with jitter and a small, bounded retry count. - Reduce burst size or concurrency, and monitor documented remaining/reset headers where available.
- Stop automatic retries for invalid requests, invalid credentials, endpoint permissions, exhausted monthly quotas, or spending limits. Correct the request or account state first.
Repeated unsuccessful requests can themselves contribute to rate-limit pressure for some APIs. Frequently Asked Questions
Does HTTP 403 always mean the API key is invalid?
No. A provider may use 403 for permissions, account or trial state, or a quota condition; the captured target page may also be the source of the 403. Check the response body and identify which layer returned it.
Should I retry every 429 response?
No. Retry only when the provider indicates a temporary limit. A depleted quota or account cap requires a usage, billing, or reset action, not repeated requests.
