First find where the black frames enter the video: in OBS’s game-capture preview, the local recording, the YouTube upload or archive, or playback on one device. Make a short local test recording and inspect it before rerunning a full match. That simple check separates capture problems from upload-processing and viewer-playback problems; no single setting is guaranteed to fix every cause.
Identify where the black frames first appear
Use the earliest version of the footage you can inspect. If the local file is already black, focus on capture or encoding. If the file is clean but the YouTube version is not, check the upload workflow. If only one device shows black video, test playback elsewhere before changing the recording setup.

- OBS preview: Check game capture and scene framing before recording.
- Local recording: Inspect the saved file. This is the quickest way to tell whether the capture itself failed.
- YouTube upload or live archive: Compare it with the local file and check that upload or archive processing has completed.
- One viewer or device: Retry playback and test another device. A clean local recording points away from a capture fault.
Also distinguish missing gameplay frames from black bars around the picture. Bars usually indicate a layout or aspect-ratio mismatch; black frames in the source mean the gameplay image itself is absent.
Record a clean Call of Duty source in OBS
1. Run OBS as administrator and test capture
On Windows, OBS’s Call of Duty troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends running OBS as administrator. Start OBS that way, open the scene you use for gameplay, and check whether the game appears in the capture preview. Record a brief test, stop, then play the resulting file from beginning to end. Do not rely on the preview alone: the saved recording is the evidence that the capture and recording path worked.

If the preview is black, try the administrator step first. OBS also identifies overlay conflicts and fullscreen behavior as troubleshooting considerations. Temporarily close overlays and test the game’s fullscreen behavior if the capture remains blank; make one change at a time and record another short test.
2. Check scene framing and dimensions
Fit the game source to the scene and confirm that the base canvas and scaled output match the layout you intend to publish. OBS treats these as separate dimensions: changing the base canvas can require you to reposition or resize sources. Recheck the game source after any canvas change.
If gameplay is visible but surrounded by bars, correct the source fit and output layout. If entire moments in the saved file are black, framing alone is unlikely to explain them; return to the capture test.

3. Test the resolution and frame rate your system can sustain
Resolution and frame rate affect system performance. Test the settings you plan to use on your own PC instead of assuming one configuration will suit every Call of Duty release or computer. Keep capture and upload frame rates aligned: YouTube recommends uploading at the same frame rate used for recording. Its standard examples include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60 frames per second.
Do not treat a recommended upload bitrate as a cure for missing capture frames. YouTube’s bitrate guidance is a recommendation for encoding, not a guarantee against capture gaps. First establish that the local recording is clean.
Prepare and upload the match recording
For a standard upload, YouTube recommends an MP4 file using H.264, progressive scan and BT.709 for SDR. Keep the upload frame rate the same as the recording frame rate. YouTube also warns that MP4 edit lists can interfere with processing, so if an otherwise clean file processes incorrectly, check whether the export introduced edit lists and make a fresh export without them.

These are upload recommendations, not evidence that YouTube can repair black frames already present in the source. Compare the processed upload with the local file. If the local file is clean, retry playback and test another device as well as checking the YouTube version.
Check a live-origin VOD and its archive
If the match VOD came from a livestream, check both the stream and its local archive. YouTube recommends testing with similar movement and audio, monitoring stream health, and confirming that the local archive is intact and continues to grow during the broadcast.
- For live encoder settings, YouTube’s guidance specifies H.264 CBR and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds.
- Compare the local archive with the YouTube playback to determine where the fault first appears.
- DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live event; it does not repair black frames already recorded into the source.
