A 403 does not, by itself, tell you whether the screenshot API rejected your request or the Indian website rejected the renderer. First separate the API’s own response from the target page’s final HTTP status. Then check the provider’s account and quota details; if the target returned 403, investigate its permissions, security rules, and possible IP or location filtering. The fact that a site is Indian is not enough to identify the cause.
First identify which system returned 403
A screenshot request crosses two layers: your request to the screenshot provider, and the renderer’s request to the website. Either layer can be associated with a 403, and vendors do not use status codes identically. For example, ScreenshotAPI documents quota exhaustion and trial expiration as provider-side 403 cases, while Screenshot API documents a separate field for the target document’s final status. ScreenshotAPI’s error reference and Screenshot API’s documentation describe those vendor-specific details.

- Save the exact HTTP status and response body from the screenshot API call. If the response contains a structured error code or message, use that detail rather than guessing from 403 alone.
- Check whether the vendor exposes the target page’s final status separately. Screenshot API documents
X-Page-Statusas the final target-document status after redirects. A target status of 401 or 403 can mean the returned image is a login or error page, not the page you intended to capture. - Record the provider request ID and timestamp, if present. Redact API keys and other credentials before sharing logs.
If the provider itself returned an error and there is no evidence the renderer reached the target, start with your provider account and request details. If the provider completed the capture but reports a target-page 403, investigate the target response instead.

Use the named provider’s documentation to verify the API key, subscription or trial state, remaining quota, and request limits. Do not transfer one vendor’s status-code mapping to another. ScreenshotAPI, for instance, documents a missing token and inactive subscription as 401 errors, unpaid service as 402, and quota exhaustion or trial expiration as 403; those meanings apply to that vendor’s documented service, not to screenshot APIs generally. See its error mapping.

- Confirm that the key is present, current, and being sent in the parameter or header the endpoint expects.
- Check the account dashboard and usage information for an expired trial, inactive subscription, exhausted quota, or request limit.
- Compare the request with the provider’s current endpoint and parameter documentation; a malformed request may produce a vendor-specific error response.
- Keep the complete error body and request ID when contacting support, but remove secrets.
If the target website returned 403, inspect the response
A target-side 403 can reflect an origin permission rule, a web application firewall (WAF), an IP deny rule, or another security policy. Cloudflare’s guidance distinguishes unbranded 403 responses, which can come directly from the origin, from Cloudflare-branded errors. Its documented causes include origin permissions, ModSecurity, IP deny rules, WAF and security settings, DDoS protection, browser integrity checks, and validation checks. An SNI or host mismatch can also produce an unstyled 403. Cloudflare’s 403 troubleshooting guide was last updated September 28, 2026.
- Look at the page or response body: note whether it is a branded challenge, a rule message, a login prompt, or a plain origin error. Preserve any reference or incident identifier.
- Check redirects and hostnames: record the final URL and whether a redirect moved the renderer to another host. A host or TLS configuration mismatch may matter.
- Compare authorized routes carefully: a difference between your normal browser and the renderer, or between permitted renderer regions, can suggest an IP reputation or location policy. It does not prove that the website blocks screenshot services because it is in India.
- Respect the site’s decision: if the response indicates authentication, lack of permission, a paywall, or an explicit ban on automated access, use an authorized access method or stop rather than trying to bypass it.
When a proxy retry is appropriate
A proxy is a limited diagnostic, not a default setting or a way to get around access controls. ScreenshotOne advises against routing every request through a proxy. Its guidance allows a single proxy retry when evidence points to IP reputation, location, rate-limit, or routing trouble; for a 403, retry only when the page is otherwise accessible and the error appears related to IP or location reputation. Read ScreenshotOne’s API-error guidance.
- Establish that the route is allowed by the target site and your provider.
- Make no more than one diagnostic retry through an authorized alternate route.
- Compare the provider response and target-page status with the original attempt.
- If the result changes, report the observation to the site operator or provider; do not treat it as permission to evade a restriction.
Do not use a proxy to evade account restrictions, authentication, paywalls, site terms, or a clear decision against automated access.

For a capture through ScreenshotNeo, one GET request returns an image or PDF. Its capture process can accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. Free includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 403 mean the Indian website blocked my screenshot API?
No. The screenshot provider may have returned the 403 itself, and vendors assign different meanings to that status. Check the provider error separately from the target page’s final status.
Should I keep retrying through different proxies?
No. At most, make one authorized diagnostic retry when the evidence points to IP or location reputation, routing, or a related issue. Do not use proxies to bypass access controls or a site’s explicit decision.
