Screenshot API Request Limits: Requests per Minute and Concurrency Explained

Screenshot APIs can limit request starts, active renders and monthly usage separately. Learn how concurrency is defined, how to interpret 429s and how to pace batches.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal screenshot API request limit, and “concurrency” does not always mean simultaneous renders. Providers may separately cap how quickly requests can start, how many renders can run at once, and how many successful screenshots an account can use in a billing period. Check the specific API’s response headers, usage data and current plan documentation before setting your job pace.

Three limits that are easy to confuse

An API can enforce more than one limit at a time. Treat each as a separate constraint when planning a batch or diagnosing an error.

Limit What it controls What to check
Request-start rate How many requests may be started within a short window, such as a minute or a second. The windowing method can vary. Rate-limit headers, reset time and any documented per-second or per-minute cap.
Simultaneous work How many screenshot renders may actually be in progress at the same time, if the provider imposes a separate cap. Documentation that explicitly describes active renders or in-progress jobs. Do not infer this from a field named “concurrency.”
Period quota How many successful or billable screenshots the account may use during a monthly or other billing period. Quota remaining and reset data, plus the provider’s definition of what counts toward usage.

Meeting one limit does not guarantee that you meet the others: a client can stay under its per-minute cap but run out of monthly quota, or still have quota while starting requests too quickly.

What “concurrency” means depends on the API

Some services use “concurrency” to describe active work. Others use it for request starts within a rate-limit bucket. ScreenshotOne’s usage documentation states: “The concurrency values are request-bucket values, not active render counts.” For ScreenshotOne specifically, concurrency.limit is the number of requests that can be started in the current one-minute bucket, remaining is how many can still be started before reset, and reset is a nanosecond Unix timestamp. Its example says that if 5 remain, the client can start 5 requests and then should wait for reset. See ScreenshotOne’s Get Usage documentation, verified 2026-10-03.

  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

That definition is not a category-wide standard. ScreenshotNeo’s documentation, for example, lists “too many renders at once” as a possible cause of a 429, so an actual simultaneous-work constraint may exist separately from a request-start rate. Check the specific provider’s explanation rather than interpreting a field name on its own.

Published limits from selected providers

The figures below are plan values shown in each named provider’s documentation when checked on 2026-10-03. They are examples, not a universal benchmark or an independently audited comparison; plan settings can change. “Requests” and “screenshots” also are not interchangeable measures.

Service Documented example Documentation
ScreenshotNeo Request-per-minute and simultaneous-render limits depend on plan. Its docs describe 429 rate_limited / concurrency_limit and direct clients to Retry-After; a complete numeric plan table was not shown in the documentation portion checked. ScreenshotNeo API documentation
Screenshot API (.org) Free: 60 requests per minute and 500 screenshots per month. Its docs list X-RateLimit-Limit, X-RateLimit-Remaining, X-RateLimit-Reset, X-Quota-Remaining and X-Quota-Reset response headers. Screenshot API REST API reference
ScreenshotEngine Free: 5 requests per minute and 50 screenshots per month; Starter: 40 per minute and 3,000 per month; Professional: 100 per minute and 15,000 per month; Engine: 250 per minute and 60,000 per month. Its docs distinguish rate-limit 429s from monthly-quota 429s, and say failed requests remain subject to rate limiting even though they do not count toward successful-capture allowance. ScreenshotEngine errors and limits
Screenshot API (.net) Free: 1 request per second and 100 renders per month; Starter: 5 per second and 2,000 per month; Pro: 10 per second and 10,000 per month; Team: 25 per second and 25,000 per month; Business: 50 per second and 100,000 per month. Screenshot API (.net) documentation

The two Screenshot API services listed are separate providers: values for screenshot-api.org must not be attributed to screenshot-api.net. The provider pages did not state stable publication or revision dates, so the figures are identified by the date checked rather than treated as permanent plan terms.

How to pace requests safely

  1. Read the provider’s account documentation. Identify whether its caps apply per key, account, IP address or another scope, and whether it enforces request starts, active renders, period usage, or a combination.
  2. Inspect live capacity before launching a batch. Use the provider’s usage endpoint or response headers where available. Schedule from the remaining capacity and reset information rather than assuming a plan’s published number is the account’s current state.
  3. Queue and pace request starts. Keep bulk jobs in a queue and release work at the documented rate. Limit in-progress renders separately only when the provider documents an active-render cap.
  4. Handle temporary failures deliberately. For temporary 429 or 503 responses, honor Retry-After if supplied. If not, use a short delay that grows with each retry, add jitter, and cap attempts; ScreenshotEngine gives at most three retries as an example.
  5. Stop on permanent or quota errors. Do not keep retrying invalid input, invalid credentials or a depleted monthly allowance. Those retries will not fix the cause.

Diagnose HTTP 429 before retrying

A 429 means the request was refused for a limit-related reason, but the remedy depends on which limit was reached. Inspect the response body, Retry-After when present, rate-limit headers and quota headers before deciding what to do.

  • Short-window rate limit: Stop starting requests until the indicated retry or reset time. Resume at a pace consistent with the remaining capacity.
  • Monthly or period quota exhausted: Pause the job and wait for the quota reset or revise the plan. Repeated fast retries do not restore quota.
  • Concurrency limit: If the provider explicitly identifies too many active renders, wait for in-progress work to finish before releasing more jobs.
  • Unclear 429: Use the provider’s error body and account usage information. Do not assume every 429 has the same meaning across vendors.

A timeout needs special care: the server may have completed a capture even if the client did not receive the response. Retrying blindly can result in another successful, billable capture. Confirm job status or usage where the API supports it before resubmitting.

Security and operational considerations

  • Protect API keys. Query-string credentials can appear in URLs, logs or monitoring systems. Screenshot API (.net) warns about this exposure and recommends its bearer-header method for production calls; follow the authentication guidance of the API you use.
  • Account for failed calls. A failed request might not count toward successful-capture quota, yet can still consume rate-limit capacity. ScreenshotEngine documents this distinction.
  • Measure the whole workload. The practical throughput of a batch depends on request-start limits, active-render limits where applicable, and the period quota—not the most generous one in isolation.

Or skip the browser setup

With ScreenshotNeo, one GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. For example:

Frequently Asked Questions

Do failed screenshot requests count against a monthly quota?

It depends on the provider. ScreenshotEngine says failed requests remain subject to its rate limit but do not count toward its successful-capture allowance.
