If your workload is only screenshots, compare dedicated screenshot services with ScrapingBee; if screenshots are part of scraping or browser automation, the broader API may be a better fit. ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to evaluate for clean captures and transparent billing: it removes known consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, and charges only for clean shots. ScreenshotOne is another dedicated option with published monthly quotas, while Browserless fits workflows that also need hosted browser tasks. No service was independently tested for this comparison, so there is no evidence-based universal winner.
Shortlist: which screenshot API fits which workload?
| Service | What the official documentation establishes | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Website screenshot API and MCP server; supports PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF, with options including full-page capture, CSS-selector capture, waits and lazy-image loading. Only clean shots are billed; responses identify the page verdict and billing status. | Developers seeking a screenshot-focused API with consent cleanup, explicit billing outcomes, or MCP access for AI agents. | The product details and prices here are those provided by ScreenshotNeo; confirm current terms on its site. |
| ScrapingBee | Screenshot capture alongside Chrome rendering, custom JavaScript and viewports, full-page rendering, proxies, cookies and headers. Its API can return HTML and a screenshot through the same service. | Workloads that need screenshots as part of a broader scraping request or need page data and an image together. | Screenshot capture requires JavaScript rendering. Do not assume its controls match every dedicated screenshot API. |
| ScreenshotOne | Dedicated screenshot endpoint at https://api.screenshotone.com/take, supporting GET and POST. Its pricing page lists full-page capture and multiple output formats. |
A direct screenshot workflow where the listed monthly quota, request limit and successful-render billing model fit. | Pricing, quota and plan terms can change; verify output controls, overages and current terms before purchase. |
| Browserless | REST POST /screenshot endpoint with token authentication and Puppeteer-style settings. The docs describe URL or raw HTML input, PNG/JPEG/WebP output, full-page or selector capture, clipping, viewport and device scale, plus scrolling for lazy-loaded content. |
Teams that need screenshots as one of several hosted browser tasks. | The reviewed REST pages do not establish comparable plan pricing; confirm price, limits, region availability and exact behavior for your account. |
The comparison is about documented capabilities, not output quality or reliability: the cited official pages do not provide a comparable independent benchmark.
What to compare before replacing ScrapingBee
Capture shape and page settling
Decide whether you need the visible viewport, a full page, a clipped region or one element selected by CSS. Also check how each API handles JavaScript execution, waits for a time or element, browser events, and lazy-loaded images. ScrapingBee documents viewport capture by default and selector capture; its documentation also describes wait, wait_for and wait_browser controls. Browserless documents full-page, clipping and selector capture, as well as scrollPage: true for lazy-loaded pages. ScreenshotNeo offers full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector capture, and waits for a selector, a delay or network idle.

Check whether you need to capture a URL or raw HTML, and whether the result must be an image, PDF, or page data as well as a screenshot. Browserless documents URL or raw HTML input and PNG, JPEG or WebP output. ScrapingBee can return HTML and a screenshot in the same API. ScreenshotOne’s getting-started page describes its screenshot endpoint and its pricing page lists image formats and PDF rendering. ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL for a screenshot or PDF and also supports HTML/CSS-to-image.
Access controls and difficult targets
Inventory any need for proxies, cookies, headers, authorization, user-agent overrides, geolocation, or anti-bot handling rather than inferring parity from the phrase “screenshot API.” ScrapingBee’s feature page lists residential proxies, custom cookies and headers. ScreenshotNeo supports custom headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone and geolocation; its clean-capture flow handles known consent platforms and removes newsletter popups and chat widgets. The cited Browserless and ScreenshotOne material establishes the capabilities listed above, but does not establish comparable anti-bot or proxy performance.

Billing and operating limits
Compare included monthly captures, overage prices, request rates, concurrency, cache treatment, and whether failed captures count. ScreenshotOne states that successful screenshots not served from cache count toward quota. ScreenshotNeo says bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and reports page verdict and billing status in response headers. The reviewed ScrapingBee and Browserless pages do not establish comparable failed-capture billing terms here; check their current account terms before migrating.
ScrapingBee: keep it when screenshots belong to scraping
ScrapingBee already supports screenshots, so replacing it is not automatically necessary. Its feature page describes Chrome rendering, custom JavaScript, custom viewports, full-page rendering, residential proxies, custom cookies and headers, and the ability to return HTML alongside a screenshot. That combination can suit a request that needs both extracted page content and a visual record.
There is one setup requirement to account for: the ScrapingBee API documentation says screenshot capture requires JavaScript rendering, enabled with render_js=true. The default capture is the visible viewport; use screenshot_selector when you want a particular CSS-selected area. Its documented wait controls cover time, DOM elements and browser events. Confirm the exact current parameter syntax in the documentation for the request you are building.

Browserless: screenshot capture inside hosted browser automation
Browserless lists screenshot capture as one of its REST browser tasks. The REST API overview describes URL or raw HTML input, Puppeteer options and PNG, JPEG or WebP responses. Its current screenshot API documentation describes POST /screenshot, token authentication, selector-based capture, full-page capture, clipping, viewport and device-scale settings, and scrollPage: true for lazy-loaded content.
This breadth is useful if the same hosted-browser integration also supports other browser tasks. The reviewed pages do not establish a comparable plan price, so check current pricing, rate limits, region requirements and feature behavior for your intended account. Do not use the older Browserless BaaS v1 screenshot guide as setup instructions: it is explicitly deprecated and no longer actively supported.
ScreenshotNeo: alternative to try first
ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. The reason to evaluate it first is specific: it accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed, with a verdict and billing indicator in the response. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf—also let AI agents use it through Claude, Cursor or another MCP client.
Its documented feature set includes full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector capture, dark mode, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF settings, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, hide selectors, waits, request/resource blocking, custom request identity and location settings, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching with a chosen TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI spec. It also accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs to ease switching. These are documented options, not a claim that every site renders identically.

One-call example
For a URL capture, this cURL request saves a WebP image. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request pattern in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Or in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to choose and migrate without guessing
- Write down the actual capture contract. Record URL or HTML input, viewport or full-page output, selector/clipping needs, formats, waits, and any required cookies, headers or location settings.
- Separate screenshot-only work from browser work. If the same request needs scraped HTML or browser automation, compare the cost and complexity of keeping a broader service against adding a dedicated screenshot endpoint.
- Check billing semantics against your failure modes. Test or confirm how each vendor treats cache hits, blocked pages, timeouts, empty output and retries; do not assume a failed image is free.
- Verify limits and geography before implementation. Confirm current plans, quotas, rate limits, concurrent-request rules, service regions and terms directly with each vendor.
- Run a representative validation set. Use pages with consent dialogs, lazy-loaded images, long rendering, dynamic content and the exact selectors your application depends on. Compare the returned dimensions, format, content and failure signals; do not infer reliability from feature lists.
- Preserve observability during cutover. Log status, response headers, capture duration and whether a usable image was returned. Route only validated requests to the replacement, and retain the old path long enough to diagnose differences.
Common migration problems
- ScrapingBee returns no screenshot: verify that JavaScript rendering is enabled with
render_js=true, then check the request and screenshot options against its current documentation. - The image shows only the top of a page: determine whether the API defaults to viewport capture and enable full-page capture if supported. For lazy-loaded content, use the vendor’s documented scroll or wait controls where available.
- A selected element is absent or clipped: confirm the CSS selector matches after rendering, wait for the element to exist, and distinguish element capture from a page clip or viewport setting.
- A page looks different from a browser visit: review JavaScript execution and waits, then check whether required cookies, headers, user-agent, timezone or geolocation settings are being passed. A feature listing does not guarantee identical site behavior.
- Quota use differs from request count: inspect whether the vendor counts successful renders, cache hits, retries or failed pages differently. ScreenshotOne explicitly counts successful uncached renders; ScreenshotNeo returns verdict and billing headers.
- Browserless instructions do not match: use the current REST API documentation rather than its deprecated BaaS v1 page.
Recommendation
Keep ScrapingBee in consideration when screenshots are tightly coupled to scraping, rendered HTML, proxy use or page data. Consider Browserless when screenshot capture belongs in a broader hosted-browser workflow, and ScreenshotOne when its dedicated endpoint and published quota model suit the job. For a screenshot-first workflow where consent cleanup, clear failed-capture billing and MCP access matter, try ScreenshotNeo first. Vendor prices, quotas and API behavior can change; verify them before committing, and choose from your own representative pages rather than an unsupported performance ranking.
