Use Puppeteer’s request interception to decide which network requests to allow, then call page.screenshot() to save the page. The key is to resolve every intercepted request: abort requests matching rules you choose and continue all others. Puppeteer provides the mechanics, not a built-in ad or tracker detector, so the result depends on your rules and the site.
Install Puppeteer and save a screenshot
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project, then save this as screenshot.mjs. The example uses ES modules and blocks one illustrative URL pattern; it is not a maintained tracker list. Puppeteer’s official documentation is version 25.12.0 in the references cited here, so check the API documentation for the version you install.

npm install puppeteer
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setRequestInterception(true);
page.on('request', request => {
if (request.url().includes('/known-tracker-endpoint/')) {
return request.abort();
}
return request.continue();
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Run it with node screenshot.mjs. Replace https://example.com with the page to capture and adjust the request rule to the site and use case. Puppeteer documents Page.screenshot() for page capture and ElementHandle.screenshot() for a particular element; the latter attempts to scroll a hidden element into view by default. Match explicit URL or domain patterns
For a deliberate policy, inspect requests and block only patterns you have validated, such as a known host or endpoint. For example, replace the illustrative condition with a hostname check:

const blockedHosts = new Set(['tracker.example']);
page.on('request', request => {
const hostname = new URL(request.url()).hostname;
if (blockedHosts.has(hostname)) {
return request.abort();
}
return request.continue();
});
This matches a hostname exactly. If you intend to include subdomains, implement that explicitly and test it; do not assume a string match has the scope you want. Request URLs are available through request.url(). Puppeteer HTTPRequest API.
Filter by resource type cautiously
Puppeteer exposes request.resourceType(), but a type such as image or script does not say whether a request is an ad or tracker. Blocking every image, script, or stylesheet can remove wanted page content or change its layout. Use type filters only when the impact is acceptable or when combined with carefully chosen URL rules. Understand interception resolution
After page.setRequestInterception(true), requests pause until they are continued, aborted, answered, or completed from cache. Make sure every branch in your handler resolves the request; leaving one unresolved can stall navigation. Puppeteer’s own example blocks image files by URL suffix to demonstrate interception mechanics, not a complete ad-blocking policy. setRequestInterception API.

If other code or libraries also register interception handlers, guard against duplicate handling with request.isInterceptResolutionHandled(). Puppeteer supports cooperative interception when every handler supplies a numeric priority; the highest priority resolution wins. Without a priority, resolution is immediate under legacy behavior. Also note that page.authenticate() enables request interception internally. If you use authentication, account for the interaction and possible performance impact rather than assuming interception is off because your code did not explicitly enable it. Page.authenticate API.
Choose screenshot scope and format
| Need | Option | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Visible viewport | Omit fullPage or set it to false |
Captures the current viewport; this is the documented default. |

Wait for the page to be ready
The example waits for networkidle2, a navigation wait option also used in Puppeteer’s screenshot-guide example. It is not a universal guarantee that the page is visually settled. Pages that render content later may need a meaningful selector or application-specific ready signal before capture.
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-page-ready="true"]');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
Use a selector that the target application actually sets, or replace it with the readiness condition appropriate to that page. A fixed delay can be used when necessary, but it may waste time on fast loads and still be too short on slow ones.

Troubleshoot common problems
Navigation hangs or times out
- Cause: An interception handler has a branch that neither continues, aborts, nor responds to the request.
- Fix: Ensure every request path resolves, including the normal pass-through case. If multiple handlers are present, check handled state before resolving.
The screenshot is missing content
- Cause: A broad resource-type rule blocked scripts, images, stylesheets, or other requests the page needs.
- Fix: Narrow the rule to validated URL patterns and retest the page. Use a meaningful readiness selector when content appears after initial navigation.
Ads or trackers still appear
- Cause: The chosen URL rules do not match the requests used by that site, or the apparent element is already part of the page content.
- Fix: Inspect request URLs and build rules for the specific site. Puppeteer does not supply an authoritative built-in ad/tracker taxonomy or guarantee complete blocking.
A request is resolved twice
- Cause: More than one handler acts on the same intercepted request.
- Fix: Use
request.isInterceptResolutionHandled()and coordinate priorities if using cooperative interception.
Capture differs from the visible browser page
- Cause: Screenshot scope, viewport, page readiness, or blocked resources differ from the conditions expected.
- Fix: Set the viewport and screenshot scope intentionally, wait for the page’s own ready signal, and check which requests your policy aborts.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its request can return an image or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
With ScreenshotNeo, cookie banners are accepted and removed, and known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Performance and cost considerations
Interception adds per-request handling and can affect performance; Puppeteer specifically notes that authentication enables interception internally and may affect performance. Keep rules simple, resolve requests promptly, and avoid blocking resources indiscriminately. With local Puppeteer, the screenshot work runs in your browser process and infrastructure; the documentation cited here does not establish a universal runtime or cost figure, which depends on your environment and target pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Puppeteer identify every ad or tracker automatically?
No. Puppeteer exposes request details and controls, but does not provide an authoritative built-in ad or tracker classification.
Can I capture just one element instead of the page?
Yes. Use the element’s ElementHandle.screenshot() method.
