If the GST or IRP portal offers a PDF download for the invoice, use that first: it gives you the portal’s invoice document directly. Use HTML/CSS to Image when you specifically need a PDF rendering of an accessible webpage. Its documented URL capture accepts a public webpage URL; the reviewed documentation does not establish that it can open a private GST account or reuse your logged-in browser session.

Do not confuse an individual invoice PDF with a spreadsheet of e-invoice data for a return. The GST portal’s GSTR-1 guide describes downloading auto-populated e-invoice details as an Excel file; larger sets may take time and appear in download history. For IRIS IRP specifically, the documented route is Manage > View Invoices, then use Print to generate the PDF and download it after processing succeeds. The default invoice view covers records with acknowledgement dates in the prior two days. Access to older records may depend on upgrading to a value-added service (VAS or VAS Premium). What HTML/CSS to Image can capture
The vendor documents a create-image endpoint at POST https://hcti.io/v1/image. A request must supply either url or html, not both; CSS can optionally be added, including when capturing a URL. For URL capture, use a fully qualified public webpage URL. Set the output format to pdf; the documentation also lists PNG, JPG and WebP. The service returns an output URL that can be used to retrieve the generated artifact. Full-page capture is documented, but behavior on a particular GST page is not established. API authentication uses HTTP Basic authentication: the API ID is the username and the API key is the password. Treat the key like a password, limit it to the required operations, and keep it on a server or in another protected environment. Do not put it in browser JavaScript, a public page, or a shared example. Do not send GST login credentials to a capture service: authenticated-session support is not established by the documented public-URL feature.

Capture a public webpage as a PDF
The following illustrative Python example sends a public demo URL, requests PDF output, and downloads the returned artifact. It uses environment variables for credentials rather than embedding secrets. Configure HCTI_API_ID and HCTI_API_KEY in your server environment first. Refer to the vendor’s API documentation for the current account-specific authentication and request requirements.

This sample is for a publicly accessible demo page, not a GST portal URL. Do not assume replacing page_url with a page from a logged-in taxpayer account will work. Check the response before downloading and handle HTTP and JSON errors in production. The exact response fields should be verified against the vendor documentation for the API version in use.

When HTML input makes more sense
If you are creating your own invoice page rather than capturing an existing public page, send the invoice markup using the html parameter instead of url; CSS may be supplied separately. Do not send both parameters in one request. An HTML-rendered copy is not a substitute for an invoice issued or recorded by the relevant GST system.
Full-page capture and rendering checks
Full-page capture is documented as an option, but a specific GST page’s layout, pagination, or dynamic content has not been verified. After capture, open the PDF and compare it with the portal record: check the invoice identity, visible line items, totals, dates, tax details, legibility, and page count. If content is missing, first confirm that the URL is public and the page has finished loading; do not interpret a successful PDF response as proof that all invoice data was captured.

- The portal PDF is unavailable: check that you are in the correct invoice search/download workflow and that the record is available there. For IRIS IRP, older records may fall outside the default two-day view and require a VAS option.
- The capture request fails: confirm that the request uses
POST https://hcti.io/v1/image, valid Basic-auth credentials, and exactly one ofurlorhtml. Consult the vendor documentation for the exact error response and account settings. - A private page is not captured: the documented URL capture route specifies a public URL and does not establish reuse of a taxpayer’s authenticated browser session. Use the portal’s own download route rather than exposing login details.
- The output is not a PDF or cannot be retrieved: verify that the request selected
pdf, then check the API response and retrieve the artifact from its returned URL. Do not assume an error response contains a usable file. - The PDF is incomplete or hard to read: compare it with the portal record and test whether the page is public and fully loaded. The documented full-page option does not guarantee correct rendering of every portal page.
- The downloaded file is an Excel workbook: you are likely in the GSTR-1 e-invoice-details download workflow, not an individual invoice PDF download.
