Multimodal models can help classify and explore visual art styles, but they do not turn Scott McCloud’s Big Triangle into a universal style meter. A more useful approach is to separate what an image depicts from how it depicts it, define the visual qualities your task cares about, and test those choices against human judgment. The Pictorial Trapezoid adapts McCloud’s comics-oriented framework for more systematic generative-image research; separate art-embedding studies show promising results for specific classification and exploration tasks, not a general solution to interpreting style.
What McCloud’s Big Triangle can—and cannot—tell you
In Understanding Comics, Scott McCloud uses a triangle to map different ways images represent the world. It is a conceptual framework for thinking about representation, particularly in comics, rather than a precise instrument that assigns every image an objective position. The researchers who developed the Pictorial Trapezoid note that McCloud himself did not present the triangle as an exact scientific measurement system.

That distinction matters when applying the idea to AI. A model can sort images according to selected labels or represent them as vectors in an embedding space, but those operations do not establish that it has measured an image’s complete position in McCloud’s framework. To make a mapping useful, define the image properties and interpretation task first; treat a triangle or trapezoid position as a design prompt unless your project has operational criteria for assigning it.
Separate the subject from its visual treatment
The Pictorial Trapezoid, proposed by Peterson, Anderson, Rondinelli, and Armstrong in 2023, adapts McCloud’s Big Triangle for more systematic research with generative text-to-image AI. Its key practical distinction is between what an image represents and how it represents it.

Representational fidelity
Representational fidelity concerns how closely an image resembles the real-world entity it refers to. A task involving a recognizable object or person may prioritize that resemblance, even when the image uses a stylized treatment.
Conceptual fidelity
Conceptual fidelity concerns how clearly an image evokes an abstract idea. An image can be visually unlike a literal depiction of an idea and still communicate that idea effectively—or look polished while failing to convey it. These two dimensions can therefore produce different judgments about the same result.

Style and abstraction are related to these questions but are not interchangeable with them. A project should specify whether it is studying resemblance, communication of a concept, stylistic treatment, or some combination. The Pictorial Trapezoid’s criteria are selected for particular research purposes, not offered as a single recipe that fits every subject or image-making task.

How multimodal models help with art styles
Multimodal models learn representations that connect visual information with other kinds of information, such as language. In an embedding approach, an image is represented as a point in a mathematical space. Researchers can use those representations for tasks such as classification or to explore relationships among images. An embedding is a computational representation of selected patterns; it is not a complete account of the historical, cultural, or human meaning of an artwork’s style.

A 2025 proceedings contribution by Hansen, Kostkan, Rocca, and Nielbo compared seven pretrained vision models on WikiArt classification tasks for genre, style, and artist. The institutional research record reports that multimodal models performed best as feature extractors in the tested tasks. This is evidence about those models, dataset, labels, and classification tasks—not proof that multimodal models are better for every art collection, style taxonomy, or current commercial system.
Google Research has also described representing paintings as points in an embedding space and combining learned styles to explore new ones. That illustrates how embeddings can support computational exploration. It does not show that a model’s representation replaces expert interpretation or captures every factor people mean by “style.”

A practical method for mapping art styles
- Define the task and subject. State what the image should depict or communicate before choosing a style label. A classification project, an image-generation study, and a visual search tool have different aims.
- Choose the fidelity that matters. Decide whether success means resemblance to a real-world referent, evocation of an abstract concept, or a deliberate balance. Record these judgments separately rather than collapsing them into a single vague score.
- Describe the visual treatment. Specify the stylistic distinctions relevant to the project and how they will be recognized. A label such as “abstract” or “realistic” is not self-defining; the criteria need to fit the images and question under study.
- Use the triangle or trapezoid to guide decisions. Treat framework positions as prompts for specifying representation and treatment. If you intend to assign positions or compare scores, define the criteria and evaluation procedure rather than assuming the framework supplies universal measurements.
- Match the model and evaluation to the task. When comparing systems, hold the image task, label set, data, and evaluation criteria consistent. Report the dataset and labels so readers can judge what the result does—and does not—establish.
- Review interpretation with people. Include human review when meaning, cultural context, or the clarity of an abstract concept matters. The cited work motivates greater semiotic precision, but does not establish a general automated score for meaning or cultural accuracy.
Keep classification, generation, and interpretation distinct

These approaches answer different questions. A framework for designing image studies is not itself an embedding model; success at classifying a dataset is not the same as generating a convincing image; and a visual relationship in an embedding space is not, on its own, an interpretation of an artwork.

- Which images and labels were used: classification depends on the dataset and the way categories such as style or genre are defined.
- What was evaluated: distinguish classification performance from image generation, style exploration, and judgments about conceptual meaning.
- How fidelity was judged: explain whether the project measured resemblance, concept communication, or both, and how the criteria were applied.
- Where human interpretation remains necessary: disclose when cultural context or meaning is being assessed by people rather than inferred from an automated result.
The available studies support a bounded conclusion: multimodal representations can be useful for selected art-analysis tasks, and the Pictorial Trapezoid offers a more systematic way to frame some generative-image research. They do not validate a current, general-purpose model for mapping the full Big Triangle across media, cultures, and art-historical traditions.
