Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A charger pin marks a listed location—not a guaranteed charging stop. Before relying on it, check that the connector and access work for your vehicle, the station is operating, the route is within reach with a reserve, and you have another compatible option if the plan fails.
Why a charger pin is not enough
Location discovery and a usable charging session are different things. A map marker alone cannot confirm that the plug fits, the site is open, a stall is free, or the station will still be working when you arrive. Status information can help, but no planner can guarantee a successful session from a pin or status field alone.

The available status views also have limits. Tesla’s Model 3 owner manual for Singapore distinguishes Supercharger states including operational, busy, reduced capacity, closed, and no data; it says real-time stall availability and a site map are available at select locations (Tesla Model 3 owner manual). In the United States, the Joint Office points drivers to Department of Energy station data that includes station status and distinguishes available from temporarily unavailable chargers (Joint Office station resources). Neither source establishes that every charger is covered or that a listed status guarantees what you will find on arrival.
Build a route around your car and its usable range
Check connector and vehicle compatibility
Filter for connectors that work with your vehicle, then confirm any access or adapter requirements with the network or site. PlugShare says its route planner filters for plugs compatible with a saved vehicle (PlugShare route-planning guidance). Tesla’s manual notes that Supercharger use depends on the car’s charging capability and that an adapter may be needed; that guidance applies to the relevant Tesla vehicle and market, not every EV or charging network.

Plan reachable legs, not nearby pins
Evaluate the distance and estimated energy for each leg between stops. A charger can look close on a map and still be impractical if the road route, elevation, weather, traffic, or driving speed raises energy use.
PlugShare describes its suggested range estimate as about 85–90% of a vehicle’s maximum range. That is product guidance, not a measured accuracy statistic, and PlugShare explicitly says the estimate does not account for pathing, elevation, road, or weather conditions (PlugShare range guidance). PlugShare also advises planning to arrive with at least 10–15% battery charge as a buffer for unexpected conditions such as traffic or a station being down. Treat both figures as PlugShare’s recommendations, not universal engineering guarantees.

Adjust for conditions that change consumption
Energy use depends on how and where a vehicle is driven. Tesla says its in-car prediction uses driving style and environmental inputs and updates as the car travels (Tesla energy prediction guidance). ChargePoint says its trip planner does not automatically detect factors such as towing or cold weather, so drivers should manually lower the effective range they enter (ChargePoint route-planning guidance).
Check the station before committing to it
- Confirm fit and access: verify the connector, any adapter or cable needs, and any site-specific access conditions using current station or network information.
- Review current status: check the network’s own app or another current source shortly before relying on the stop. A status or availability field is information to weigh, not a promise.
- Assess the stop itself: check charger speed, expected stop time, price, hours or access restrictions, and nearby amenities where the listing provides them.
- Choose a fallback: identify another compatible charger within reach if the first is unavailable, occupied, or unsuitable.
The Australian Government recommends considering charger distance, speed, time, plug type, availability, price, amenities, reviews, and photos, as well as having alternate charging options. Its guidance also warns that long distances, varied terrain, extreme temperatures, and higher speeds can reduce range (Australian Government EV travel advice). These recommendations are Australia-specific; station details and access rules vary elsewhere.

What different planning tools can—and cannot—tell you
Tools expose different parts of the planning problem rather than guaranteeing the whole trip. PlugShare documents vehicle-compatible location filtering and stop-range guidance. Tesla describes in-car energy estimates and Supercharger status. ChargePoint documents route suggestions using range and state of charge. The Joint Office describes U.S. station data with status information. These are examples, not a comprehensive or current feature audit; features and coverage can differ by vehicle, account, market, and network.

Keep a practical backup plan
- Choose a conservative arrival reserve and avoid relying on a marginal leg when conditions are uncertain.
- Save another compatible stop within reach, rather than assuming a nearby pin will be usable.
- Reassess your route when weather, terrain, speed, traffic, or towing changes the expected energy use; some planners require you to make that adjustment manually.
- Use current network information before you commit to a stop, especially when there is little room to reroute.
ChargePoint says a 20–30% end-of-trip state of charge is reasonable for most drivers in its guidance, last updated June 16, 2026 (ChargePoint route-planning guidance). This is ChargePoint’s advice, not an independent standard or a substitute for checking the demands of your own route.

When a charging cable belongs in your travel kit
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable may be useful on routes where you expect to use chargers without a tethered cable. The Australian Government’s travel-kit guidance, citing NRMA, lists one as an item to consider (Australian Government EV travel advice). Confirm that the cable matches your vehicle and the charging points you use. It cannot fix a wrong listing, failed station, occupied stall, or incompatible connector, and it is not a universal requirement.
