SCIM Errors: Match HTTP Status to the JSON Details

SCIM errors combine an HTTP status with a JSON body. Learn what status, scimType, and detail mean, how to investigate common failures, and what RFC 9865 adds for cursor pagination.

A SCIM error is both an HTTP response and a JSON message. Check them together: the HTTP status tells you the broad outcome, while the response body’s scimType and detail can narrow down what went wrong. RFC 7644 defines the standard error format; a 2025 update adds invalidCursor for cursor-pagination requests.

What a SCIM error response contains

RFC 7644 §3.12 requires an error response body in JSON, identified by the schema URI urn:ietf:params:scim:api:messages:2.0:Error. Its status attribute is required and represents the HTTP response status as a string. scimType and detail are optional.

Part What it tells you What to keep in mind
HTTP status The HTTP-level outcome of the request. Interpret it in the context of the method, endpoint, permissions, resource, headers, and request body.
status The HTTP status code repeated in the JSON body as a string. It should agree with the status line.
scimType An optional SCIM-specific error keyword. Match it to RFC 7644’s definitions and operation applicability; it is not an unrestricted natural-language diagnosis.
detail An optional human-readable explanation. The wording is not standardized across service providers.

For example, a schematic response might look like this:

{
  "schemas": ["urn:ietf:params:scim:api:messages:2.0:Error"],
  "status": "400",
  "scimType": "invalidValue",
  "detail": "A provider-specific explanation of the invalid value"
}

The example shows the format, not a message every provider will return. If the body is missing, malformed, or disagrees with the HTTP status, record what the service actually returned and check its documentation; the standards do not define a universal interpretation for those cases.

How to interpret common SCIM error keywords

RFC 7644’s §3.12 table associates SCIM detail types with HTTP 400 responses and specifies which operations each keyword applies to. The keyword is optional, and not every 400 response must include one.

scimType General diagnostic direction
invalidFilter Check filter syntax and whether the attribute and comparison combination is supported.
tooMany Check whether the request asks for more results or values than the operation permits.
uniqueness Check whether a value that must be unique conflicts with an existing value.
mutability Check whether the request attempts to change an attribute that cannot be changed in that context.
invalidSyntax Check the syntax of the request or value.
invalidPath Check the path used to identify the target attribute or location.
noTarget Check whether the operation’s target can be found.
invalidValue Check whether a supplied value is invalid for the relevant attribute or operation.
invalidVers Check version-related conditions, including conditional request headers where relevant.
sensitive Check whether the request involves information the service treats as sensitive.

These are diagnostic directions, not substitutes for the RFC’s operation-specific rules or a provider’s explanation. A 400 generally indicates an unparsable or syntactically incorrect request, or one that violates the schema. Other HTTP statuses indicate different outcomes, so do not diagnose every failure as a bad input value.

What changed for cursor pagination

RFC 9865, a Standards Track document published in October 2025, updates RFCs 7643 and 7644 with cursor-based pagination. It adds invalidCursor for an invalid cursor value. For invalid pagination parameters or other pagination errors, the RFC says a service provider should return the appropriate HTTP status and a detailed JSON error response as defined by RFC 7644 §3.12.

For the cursor flow, an empty cursor value requests the first page. Subsequent queries use the returned nextCursor or previousCursor. If a request fails with invalidCursor, check that the cursor came from the service’s pagination response and that the request passes it as expected.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Capture the response as received. Record the HTTP status line, method, endpoint, and complete response body.
  2. Inspect the JSON envelope. Confirm the body parses as JSON and check whether schemas contains urn:ietf:params:scim:api:messages:2.0:Error.
  3. Compare the statuses. The HTTP status and the body’s required string status should agree. Preserve any mismatch as an observed response rather than guessing which value the service intended.
  4. Use the keyword in context. If scimType is present, look up its meaning and applicable operations in RFC 7644 §3.12. Do not apply a keyword’s meaning to an unrelated endpoint.
  5. Read the detail as a provider clue. Use detail to guide investigation, but do not assume another provider will use the same wording.
  6. Check the request implicated by the response. Depending on the error and operation, review JSON syntax, SCIM schema and attribute constraints, filter or path behavior, version headers, permissions, resource existence, and pagination parameters.
  7. Consult provider documentation when needed. The standards establish the format and vocabulary, not a proprietary mapping for every service’s messages.
  8. Validate samples before reusing them. Check both JSON syntax and consistency between the HTTP status and body status. RFC Editor errata identify errors in RFC 7644 examples.

Use the standards as the diagnostic baseline

RFC 7644 states that implementers must return errors in a JSON response body in addition to the HTTP response code. RFC 9865 extends that guidance to cursor-pagination errors and supplies the invalidCursor keyword. Together, the documents provide a reliable baseline for reading SCIM errors, while the actual detail text and any provider-specific behavior still need to be interpreted against the service you are integrating with.
