If you want games where save information carries into the next game, start with the Mass Effect trilogy: its three games are built around decisions that travel forward. Dragon Age and The Witcher also connect earlier games to later ones, but their handoffs vary—from importing a save to recreating a world state or triggering a limited callback. “Carry over” does not always mean your character, gear, and statistics all transfer.
What carries over—and what does not?
A sequel can use an earlier game’s history in several different ways. Before choosing a series, distinguish between a playable character or save import and a story history that only affects selected scenes.

- Continuing choices: decisions from an earlier game influence later events, without necessarily moving every item or statistic.
- Save import: the sequel reads data from a compatible save file.
- World-state recreation: you define earlier events in a separate tool and bring that history into the sequel.
- Selected callback: the sequel asks about or simulates a few prior choices, which may affect a conversation or other limited content.
These are different kinds of continuity. A world-state import describes what happened in the story; it does not necessarily transfer a playable character, inventory, or stats.
Mass Effect: the clearest choice-driven trilogy
Mass Effect 1, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 form the strongest fit if you want a continuous story shaped by decisions across multiple games. EA describes the Mass Effect Legendary Edition as a collection of all three games and says choices carry from one game to the next. Play in release order to follow the accumulating story.
#1 Best Overall
- One person is all that stands between humanity and the greatest threat it’s ever faced.
- Relive the legend of Commander Shepard in the highly acclaimed Mass Effect trilogy with the Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
- Includes single-player base content and over 40 DLC from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, including promo weapons, armors, and packs - remastered and optimized for 4k Ultra HD.
The important distinction is that continuity here means decisions and their consequences, not a guarantee that every piece of progress, item, or statistic transfers unchanged. The collection is a convenient way to play the trilogy together, but check the current platform and edition listing for the system you use.
Dragon Age: direct import, then a constructed world state
Dragon Age uses more than one handoff method, so the answer depends on which games you are connecting.

Origins to Dragon Age II
Dragon Age II supports importing a save from Dragon Age: Origins. BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah described the import as carrying “something in the order of 600 different data points”—his approximate description of that handoff, not a universal measure of everything transferred.

For Dragon Age: Inquisition, BioWare described Dragon Age Keep as a way to customize a historical world state and bring it into the game. That approach meant players could define prior events without relying on the old save file. Darrah wrote that it was a priority for fans to have decisions carry forward “regardless of their past or future platform.” This is a world-history handoff, not the same thing as importing a playable character and all their equipment.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a narrower connection to the earlier games. An EA staff forum response says it does not directly import older saves or integrate with Keep. Instead, character setup lets you establish the Inquisitor and a few key decisions from Inquisition that affect the story.

In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, players can simulate The Witcher 2 save data. WB Games Support says answering “Yes” leads to a special conversation. That establishes a selected story callback, not a full transfer of the earlier game’s progress, inventory, or statistics.

If you are choosing a series specifically for deep decision continuity, the Mass Effect trilogy is the more straightforward recommendation. The Witcher 3 still acknowledges a prior choice, but the documented handoff is limited.

| Series or handoff | How the sequel gets the history | What the cited source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Mass Effect trilogy | Decisions carry from game to game | EA describes choices traveling across the three games; it does not say every item or statistic transfers unchanged. |
| Dragon Age: Origins to Dragon Age II | Import an earlier save | BioWare describes a save import and Darrah gives an approximate “something in the order of 600 different data points.” |
| Dragon Age: Inquisition | Customize and import a world state with Dragon Age Keep | BioWare described recreating prior events for the game, including for players without the old files. |
| The Witcher 2 to The Witcher 3 | Simulate prior save data in The Witcher 3 | WB Games Support says the “Yes” option leads to a special conversation; full progress transfer is not established. |
| Inquisition to The Veilguard | Set selected history during character setup | An EA staff response says players can define the Inquisitor and a few key decisions; direct save import and Keep integration are not supported. |
Choose Mass Effect for a trilogy centered on consequences that accumulate across games. Choose Dragon Age if you want a series with both direct save import and a separate world-state setup, while checking which handoff applies to each sequel. Choose The Witcher if a targeted acknowledgment of an earlier choice is enough.
