Researchers from the University of Warwick and the University of Birmingham have uncovered material phases that form temporarily as specially designed molecules are heated. One intermediate was a previously unknown form of bismuth vanadate; another was found to store lithium. The discoveries could open new paths for battery and solar-fuel research, but they do not yet demonstrate a better battery or a higher-output solar-fuel device.
What are the hidden materials?
They are intermediate phases: materials that appear during the transformation of a starting compound into a final product. The team began with “single-source precursors,” molecules containing the elements needed to make a target material, and tracked what happened as those molecules were heated. Researchers often focus on the final product, so transient or less familiar phases along the way can go unnoticed.

The study found two notable intermediates. One was β-BiVO₄, a previously unknown, kinetically stabilised form of bismuth vanadate with a different atomic structure from known forms. The other was an intermediate that stored lithium. The researchers used solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and pair distribution function analysis to observe the materials and follow their structures.

Bismuth vanadate already attracts interest in solar-fuel research because its light absorption and energy can support water splitting. A different structure and larger band gap give researchers another material property to investigate and potentially tune. That is a research opportunity, not proof that the new form absorbs light more usefully or improves a working system.

Has this produced a better battery or solar-fuel system?
No such performance improvement is established in the university’s account of the work. The lithium result is a materials finding, not a reported battery test: the release gives no capacity figure, cycle-life result, or head-to-head comparison. Likewise, the β-BiVO₄ finding does not include a demonstrated solar-fuel device or fuel-output measurement. The practical value of either intermediate remains a question for further study.
Why study what happens during heating?
Heating can drive a precursor through multiple stages before a final material forms. If researchers examine only the end product, they may miss phases that are difficult to make or identify through conventional heating approaches. Tracking the transformation can reveal those stages and help scientists investigate how precursor choice, temperature, and reaction pathway influence the materials that form.
