Founded by Xiaoyan (Amy) Ma, the Edinburgh company is trying to solve a practical industrial problem: how to reduce the burden of manual sorting without forcing facilities to rebuild their conveyor lines. Its published prototype figures are promising, but they are not independent proof of results across customer sites.
What Danu Robotics is building
Danu is not making a household recycling gadget. Its H.E.R.O. series is specialized equipment for MRFs, where mixed materials travel along conveyors and need to be separated into usable streams. The company says its system combines computer vision and artificial intelligence to identify items, then directs robotic arms to pick them from the moving belt. Its stated focus is dry mixed recyclables.

Danu presents H.E.R.O. as a retrofit designed to work alongside manual sorting and fit into existing facilities with limited disruption. The company says its two-arm system needs less than one metre of conveyor space and can be installed in less than a day. Those are company specifications, not independently verified installation or performance benchmarks. Danu’s technology page and H.E.R.O. Series 2 page describe the design.

In an automated sorting line, recognizing an object is only part of the task. The system must identify material on a moving belt, choose a target, and successfully move it into the correct destination. Danu emphasizes recording a pick only after the object reaches the bin, rather than counting an arm movement as a successful sort. That distinction matters: a fast arm is not necessarily producing clean, usable output.

The company says high-wear grippers can be exchanged in 20 minutes and that its software and AI are licensed for updates as the technology evolves. It also reports that approximately 90% of its robotic systems can be recycled. These are stated design and maintenance claims; the company pages do not provide an independent lifecycle assessment or details establishing compatibility of replacement parts. Danu’s technology information outlines these claims.
From university computing work to customer deployments
Ma’s path to Danu included technical work at the University of Edinburgh. The university says she completed an MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science in 2021 and identifies her as Danu’s founder. In a January 2023 account, the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (EPCC) described collaboration with the company to build a waste-image database and develop machine-learning software to identify recyclable and contaminant materials. Danu used EPCC’s Cirrus supercomputer to process data and train the software. EPCC’s account of the project also quotes Ma, then Danu’s CEO, saying: “The help of EPCC has been tremendous and definitely provided significant professional software engineering support to help drive the project forward.”

That same January 2023 account said the team was undertaking two months of lab testing to integrate software with robot hardware, followed by a planned three-month prototype trial at Glasgow City Council’s recycling centre. It described a plan, not a confirmed trial outcome. A later milestone appears in the National Robotarium’s 2025 annual report: it says Danu moved into the facility in 2024, manufactured systems there, and began deploying them to customers in the UK, EU, and Canada. The report establishes that deployments began, but does not publish site-by-site operating results. The National Robotarium’s 2025 annual report provides that update.

A 2024 profile from Edinburgh Innovations reports several prototype figures: up to 40 picks per minute for Danu’s prototype, compared with an average of 10–20 picks per minute for trained human operators; below 1% contamination attributed to the prototype; and reported operating-cost savings ranging from 30% to 100%. The profile does not identify a specific facility outcome for the savings range, nor does it give a test protocol, sample size, material mix, or independent verification for the performance claims. They should therefore be read as attributed prototype claims, not guaranteed results or a demonstrated average across deployments. Edinburgh Innovations’ 2024 profile contains the figures.

For a facility considering automation, the useful question is not simply how many picks an arm can attempt each minute. A fair operational comparison would account for:
- Correctly sorted material and contamination in the outgoing stream.
- Successful picks at the destination, not attempted movements.
- Throughput and quality over a full operating day.
- Uptime, maintenance, gripper replacement, and missed picks.
- Space required, installation disruption, and compatibility with the existing line.
- Total operating cost compared with a clearly defined manual-sorting baseline.
Danu’s own emphasis on bin-level success and genuine picks per day reflects why those measures matter. Publicly available figures cited above do not provide a like-for-like independent comparison across vendors or customer sites.

Why the adoption test is still operational
Robotic sorting has to fit a facility’s changing material stream and keep working through ordinary operating conditions. Danu itself says adoption depends on showing efficiency, accuracy, reliability, and cost effectiveness in real operations. A compact retrofit and quick stated installation could help address space and disruption concerns, while replaceable grippers and updatable software speak to maintenance and ongoing development. But those design features do not by themselves establish long-term uptime, output quality, or savings at a particular MRF.

The evidence describes a credible development arc: university-supported machine-learning work and planned prototype testing in 2023, followed by a report of customer deployments in the UK, EU, and Canada by 2025. It does not yet give public, independently assessed results for named sites, operating periods, material-specific accuracy, downtime, or cost against a specified manual baseline. Those are the measures that would show whether the prototype promise carries through to routine plant operations.

What the story says about AI in recycling
Danu’s approach illustrates that AI recognition is one component of a physical system, not a complete recycling solution by itself. The software needs relevant waste images and training; the robot then has to act accurately on a moving conveyor, and the facility needs a measurable improvement in recovered material, contamination, throughput, or cost. Ma’s company is pursuing that integration, with product claims and early reported deployments marking progress rather than a final verdict on performance.
For more background on Ma and the company’s university links, the University of Edinburgh Science Magazine podcast listing features an interview with her on creating a start-up as a student and the possibility of AI and robotics changing recycling.
