Scientists Coat Mitochondria in a High-Tech Material—But It’s an Early Lab Finding

A 2026 lab study formed a ZIF-8 coating on isolated mouse mitochondria and reported early respiratory results. It does not show a human treatment or improved transplantation.

Scientists have coated isolated mitochondria with a porous material called ZIF-8 and reported that the organelles retained respiratory function in laboratory tests. After the coated mitochondria were transferred into mouse cells, the cells showed greater respiratory capacity, with no detected change in viability in that experiment. The work is a proof of concept—not a treatment, a human study, or evidence that the coating improves mitochondrial transplantation.

What scientists coated mitochondria with

The coating is ZIF-8, a zeolitic imidazolate framework and a type of metal-organic framework, or MOF. MOFs are materials whose composition and structure can be adjusted for different properties. In this study, Marco D’Amato and colleagues formed ZIF-8 directly on freshly isolated mitochondria rather than applying a pre-made coating.

The experiment addressed a practical materials-science question: can a coating be formed around mitochondria without eliminating their respiratory activity? Mitochondria are cellular structures that help produce energy through respiration. A coating might eventually be designed to support delivery or interaction with recipient cells, but those potential functions are not established by this study.

How the coating was made

The researchers mixed freshly isolated mitochondria with zinc nitrate and 2-methylimidazole (Hmim) in isotonic saline, then incubated the mixture for 15 minutes at room temperature. Their selected coating condition used 10 μM zinc nitrate and 40 μM Hmim. These are laboratory reaction concentrations, not a dose for use in people.

Zinc concentration mattered in tests of isolated mitochondria. At 50 μM zinc nitrate, the oxygen consumption rate fell to 32% of the control level (n = 3; p < 0.05). At 10 μM, the measured rate was 75% of control, and the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). These findings help explain the selected experimental condition; they do not show that the coated mitochondria perform identically to untreated mitochondria in every respect.

What the experiments found

Respiration in isolated mitochondria

The team studied mitochondria isolated from wild-type mouse liver and characterized the coated material’s bioenergetic function. The paper reports that the coated organelles retained respiratory competence in laboratory testing. The zinc-concentration results are specific oxygen-consumption measurements from isolated mitochondria, not measurements of health, lifespan, or disease outcomes.

Transfer into mouse cells

In a separate experiment, researchers transferred the coated mitochondria into mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs). The recipient cells showed increased respiratory capacity, while cell viability was not affected in that experiment. This is an encouraging biological result in a cell model, but it does not establish that the coating caused better delivery or integration than an uncoated-mitochondria approach.

Does this mean mitochondrial transplantation works better?

No. The result makes a possible application worth investigating, but the study does not prove that coating improves transplantation performance. The institutional account of the work likewise describes that benefit as unproven. The experiments were conducted with isolated mouse-liver mitochondria and mouse cells; they were not human trials and do not demonstrate effectiveness in people.

The researchers also say that the influence of coating coverage and thickness on mitochondrial activity still needs systematic study. Those details matter: a coating’s structure could affect how well mitochondria function or interact with recipient cells. The present work establishes a way to form a coating and reports early lab results, not an optimized or clinically validated transplantation method.

What remains unknown

  • How coating structure changes function: Coverage and thickness have not yet been systematically defined in relation to mitochondrial activity.
  • Whether transplantation improves: The reported cell experiment does not establish that coated mitochondria transfer, persist, or function better than uncoated mitochondria.
  • Whether the approach is useful in people: No human efficacy result or clinical treatment is established by this study.
  • Whether other coatings can be tailored: The material’s tunability suggests possible future research directions, but specific functions remain prospective.

Professor Pierangelo Metrangolo described the longer-term possibility of tailoring MOFs for different objectives, saying that researchers could develop coatings with specific functions. Dr. Valeria Tiranti similarly said a designed coating could in the future facilitate transfer and interaction between mitochondria and cells. Both statements concern future prospects, not demonstrated outcomes of the reported experiments.

Why the finding matters—and what it does not say

This work is a materials-science proof of concept with an early biological test: ZIF-8 was formed on isolated mitochondria under micromolar precursor conditions, respiratory competence was reported after coating, and respiratory capacity increased after transfer into a mouse-cell model without a detected viability effect. That gives researchers a starting point for studying whether a tunable coating can be engineered for mitochondrial delivery.

It does not show that mitochondria have been “recharged,” that aging has been reversed, or that a mitochondrial disease can now be treated. The study was published online in the Journal of the American Chemical Society on September 18, 2026. It was supported by the Italian Ministry of Health’s Operational Health Plan through the CALabria HUB per Ricerca Innovativa ed Avanzata project (award T4-AN.09); the authors declared no competing financial interest.
