Yes—under controlled conditions, generative AI has caused people to report details that were never present. The strongest demonstrations involve leading chatbot interviews, AI-edited images and videos, and misleading details introduced during a chat. These experiments show a real susceptibility, not proof that ordinary AI use inevitably causes permanent memory loss.
What the strongest experiments found
Generative chatbot interviews changed eyewitness recall
An MIT/Chan study reported in 2024 tested 200 people who watched a crime video and then answered questions in one of four formats: a control condition, a conventional survey, a scripted chatbot, or a generative chatbot. The generative-chatbot group produced more than three times as many immediate false memories as the control group and 1.7 times as many as the survey group. MIT Media Lab reports that 36.4% of responses in the generative-chatbot interaction were misled.

The effect was not limited to the first session. At a one-week follow-up, the number of induced false memories remained constant, while confidence in those memories was higher than in the control condition. MIT identifies the conversational paper as an August 2024 arXiv preprint, so it should be described as a preprint unless a later peer-reviewed version is independently confirmed.

AI-edited visuals made inaccurate memories more vivid
A preregistered 2025 CHI study divided 200 participants among four conditions involving unedited images, AI-edited images and videos generated from those edits. Videos made from AI-edited images produced 2.05 times the false recollections of unedited controls. Confidence in those false memories reached 1.19 times the control level. The result matters because a moving, realistic sequence can supply perceptual detail that feels like personal observation even when the detail was manufactured.

Misleading chatbot discussions outperformed ordinary text misinformation
In a 2025 IUI experiment reported by MIT, 180 participants were assigned to no intervention, honest or misleading summaries, or honest or misleading chatbot discussions. Misleading chatbot interactions produced significantly higher rates of false recollection than traditional text-based misinformation delivery. The comparison suggests that an interactive exchange can be more influential than simply reading a false statement, although the study does not establish how often this happens in everyday use.
AI can also improve a memory-related judgment
The evidence is not one-directional. A 2025 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that AI assistance improved people’s ability to distinguish correct from incorrect eyewitness lineup identifications across two experiments. That counterexample is important: whether AI helps or harms depends on the task, the system’s behavior and the information it introduces.

How a chatbot can turn a suggestion into a memory
Suggestive questioning
A fluent system can ask a leading question—such as whether a detail was present—without sounding leading. Conversational wording makes the premise feel like part of a normal interview, reducing the cue that the detail is unverified.

Source confusion
Memory stores content and context imperfectly. After a chat, a person may remember a detail but misattribute its source, confusing an AI suggestion with something seen in the original event or image. Repeated references can make that source harder to reconstruct later.

Visual realism and repetition
An edited photograph or generated video supplies concrete color, motion and spatial information. Those perceptual features can increase both the chance of a false recollection and confidence in it, even though the underlying event did not contain them.
Misinformation during retrieval
When someone is trying to recall an article, conversation or incident, a chatbot can insert an incorrect detail at the moment the memory is being retrieved. The person may then incorporate the detail into the account they rehearse, making a later report feel internally consistent.

What the findings do—and do not—show
The experiments demonstrate causal risk under designed conditions: participants encountered suggestive prompts, altered media or deliberately misleading exchanges. They do not show that every chatbot conversation creates a false memory, that all users are equally vulnerable, or that normal AI use causes inevitable cognitive decline.
The one-week result is also narrower than permanent memory loss. In that experiment, the induced-memory count did not fall during the follow-up and confidence stayed elevated; the study did not establish effects lasting months or years. Individual differences such as familiarity with AI, interest in the task and the type of memory being tested may change susceptibility.
Best Value
A 2026 synthesis in The Washington Post quoted University of Pennsylvania researcher Gideon Nave warning, “What we are more likely to see is humans starting to decay instead of AI taking over,” and expressing concern about a world in which “thinking becomes optional.” That is a warning about reliance and judgment, not evidence that ordinary use has already produced widespread neurological deterioration.
How to reduce the risk in real situations
No universally validated consumer protocol has been established, but the study designs point to practical safeguards for eyewitnesses, investigators, journalists and anyone checking a personal recollection.
- Record an unaided account first. Write or record what you remember before asking an AI system to summarize, question or identify anything. Preserve the original timestamp and file.
- Keep original evidence separate. Store untouched photos, videos, messages and documents separately from AI-enhanced copies. Label every edited or generated file and retain its provenance.
- Ask for neutral handling. If an AI tool is unavoidable, request open-ended prompts and prohibit it from proposing details that are not present in the supplied evidence. Treat its output as a hypothesis, not a transcript.
- Compare against independent sources. Check timestamps, unedited media, contemporaneous notes and witnesses who did not see the AI exchange. Do not use the same chatbot conversation as its own corroboration.
- Pause before high-stakes decisions. For legal, employment, medical or safety judgments, have a person who has not seen the AI suggestions review the original material and the unaided account.
Questions the research leaves open
- How frequently do these effects occur during ordinary, unscripted AI use rather than laboratory tasks?
- How do age, prior AI experience, stress, sleep and personal interest alter vulnerability?
- How long do confidence increases last beyond the one-week follow-up?
- Which interface designs reliably reduce leading questions and source confusion?
- When does AI assistance improve evidence evaluation, as in the PNAS lineup experiments, instead of distorting recall?
The defensible conclusion is therefore limited but consequential: generative AI can help construct a memory for an event that never happened, especially when it asks suggestive questions or supplies vivid false evidence. Its effects are not uniformly harmful, and current studies do not justify claims of inevitable or permanent memory loss. Preserve the original record, capture your own recollection before consulting AI and require independent corroboration whenever the consequences matter.
