Start by determining whether the problem is simulation lag or network latency. If everyone sees delayed actions or freezes, reduce the server’s workload—especially maximum view distance—and check CPU, RAM, entities, mods, world generation and storage. If only one player is affected, investigate that player’s Wi‑Fi, VPN, ISP route or NAT path. Hytale’s in-game ping is useful as a rough indicator, but one ping number cannot prove that the server’s simulation is missing ticks.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Hytale servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
First, identify what kind of lag you have
“Lag” describes two different failures in a Hytale multiplayer session. Treating them as the same problem sends you toward the wrong fix.

Simulation lag occurs when the server cannot process the world fast enough. Typical signs are delayed block or combat actions, mobs that move in bursts, world updates that appear late, and freezes that every connected player notices at roughly the same time. A heavily loaded CPU, insufficient memory, expensive mods, complex server logic, a large number of NPCs or mobs, and active world generation can all contribute.
The host’s upload capacity can also matter because the server must send world and entity updates to every player. However, the official requirements publish network figures as download guidance rather than a universal per-player upload formula. Use observed load and player behavior instead of an invented “X megabits per player” rule.

Network latency affects a route or a player
Latency is the round-trip time between a player and the server. If one person has a high in-game ping while everyone else plays normally, first inspect that player’s wireless connection, VPN or virtual adapter, ISP route, and NAT path. If all players show a sudden increase, the issue may be the host’s uplink, routing, or a server-wide workload.
Ask affected players to compare the in-game ping display at the same moment. Hytale’s guide describes that value as a rough guide, not a complete performance monitor. A network report describes the host’s network conditions; it does not describe every friend’s route to the host. Do not infer server tick performance from one player’s ping.
Lower view distance before upgrading hardware
Maximum view distance is the first setting to reduce because it expands the area the server must simulate, load and communicate. Hypixel Studios’ Server Manual recommends limiting maximum view distance to 12 chunks (384 blocks) for both performance and gameplay.
Change and test the setting
- Open the server configuration that controls maximum view distance.
- Set the maximum to about 12 chunks, equivalent to 384 blocks.
- Restart the server if that configuration requires a restart.
- Have several players visit the busiest area, travel through unexplored terrain and perform the actions that normally trigger lag.
- Change only one major variable at a time, then compare the result with the same group and scenario.
A larger distance increases work non-linearly. The official requirements explain that moving from 192 blocks to 384 blocks exposes roughly four times as much world area. That means a seemingly modest increase can multiply terrain, lighting, entities and data the server must handle. Lowering the distance often improves responsiveness without spending money.

When a lower distance is not enough
Mods and plugins can add server-side logic, scheduled tasks, custom entities or extra world calculations. Temporarily disable nonessential additions and retest. If the problem disappears, re-enable them one at a time to find the expensive component.
Large groups of NPCs or mobs can create concentrated load even when the total player count is small. Clear test areas of unnecessary entities, then repeat the same movement and combat test. World generation is another common spike: entering new terrain can be more demanding than staying in a well-traveled base. Compare a known, already generated area with unexplored terrain before blaming the network.

Hytale’s voxel simulation relies heavily on processor capacity and memory. The official multiplayer guidance lists 2 Mbit/s download as a minimum and 8 Mbit/s as recommended; these figures are download guidance for multiplayer, not a complete sizing formula for every server. Mods can raise requirements beyond the baseline.
Measure instead of guessing
- Watch CPU utilization while several players are online and while someone explores new terrain. Sustained saturation or one core remaining busy during every lag spike points to processor pressure.
- Watch memory use and whether the operating system begins swapping. Swap activity can turn short simulation stalls into long freezes.
- Check storage latency and free space. Hytale’s official guidance recommends SSD storage for server data.
- Record player count, view distance, active mods and entity counts during a good session and a bad session. Those observations are more useful than a generic hardware chart.
The official material does not publish a reliable CPU-or-RAM-per-player equation. Do not promise that a particular number of cores or gigabytes will support a fixed population. Instead, leave headroom above the measured peak and retest after each configuration change.

Understand the save-size figures
Hypixel Studios gives approximately 661 MB for a 5,000-by-5,000-block Exploration-mode save and approximately 27 KB per 32-by-32 chunk. Those are storage examples, not latency benchmarks. A large save can consume disk space and increase backup time, but its size alone does not establish how many milliseconds of ping a player will see.
Verify Hytale’s UDP and QUIC connectivity
Hytale uses QUIC over UDP. A dedicated server normally listens on UDP port 5520. If you start the server with a custom port through its --bind option, forward and permit that selected UDP port instead. Forwarding only TCP does not solve Hytale’s connectivity requirement.
Firewall and router checklist
- Find the port the server is actually bound to. Use UDP 5520 unless you deliberately selected another port with
--bind. - Create an inbound firewall rule for that UDP port on the computer running the server.
- In the router, forward the same UDP port to the server’s private LAN address. Reserve that address with a DHCP reservation so it does not change.
- Restart the server and router if either device requires it, then have a player outside the home network attempt to connect.
- If you changed the port, give players the matching address and port; an old bookmark or saved endpoint will not update automatically.
Do not open random TCP ports “just in case.” Extra exposure increases attack surface without helping a QUIC connection. Keep the operating system, server software and router firmware updated, and limit firewall rules to the necessary port and executable.
Work through double NAT, CGNAT and symmetric NAT
Double NAT
Double NAT usually means a modem or ISP gateway performs routing while a second home router performs routing again. A port forwarded on only the inner router may never reach the server. Put the gateway into bridge or passthrough mode when appropriate, or forward the UDP port through both devices. If you cannot change the upstream gateway, ask its administrator or ISP for the correct arrangement.

Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT)
With CGNAT, the ISP shares one public IPv4 address among customers. Inbound forwarding cannot work from your router because the public address is not exclusively yours. Ask the ISP for a public address, often called a public IPv4 option, or use a private overlay network.
Symmetric NAT
Symmetric NAT can prevent two players from establishing a direct path even when ordinary port forwarding appears correct. The documented fallback is Tailscale. A relay may add some latency, so the connection can feel slower than a direct route. When the router permits a direct forwarded path, fixing the forwarding can restore the lower-latency route.
Confirm the path after every change
Change one variable at a time: firewall rule, forwarding, gateway mode, VPN or overlay. Have the same player reconnect after each change and note whether the connection is direct or relayed, whether only that player is affected, and whether the in-game ping changes. This prevents a VPN, router change and server restart from being treated as one unexplained “fix.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Remove avoidable VPN and virtual-adapter interference
Unnecessary VPNs and virtual network adapters can send traffic through a longer route or prevent Hytale from selecting a direct path. Update 6 of Hytale’s multiplayer networking changes says the game now prefers a direct path when one is available rather than using a VPN adapter or relay, and reports lower latency for several router cases.
Best Value
- Update Hytale on the server and every client to the same current release.
- Disconnect a consumer VPN temporarily, if your security policy allows it, and disable unused virtual adapters.
- Reconnect and repeat the same in-game test.
- If the VPN is required, try a server location closer to the Hytale host and compare the route; do not assume encryption itself is the cause.
Hytale is still in active development, so networking behavior, limits and recommended settings can change between updates. Recheck the current release notes when a previously stable route changes after an update.
Decide who should host the world
A friend-hosted world can be adequate for a small, occasional session. It becomes a poor fit when the owner’s computer is also rendering the game, the owner has to remain online, or players are spread across distant regions. A dedicated server separates rendering from simulation, stays online when the owner is away and exposes more configuration.
Self-hosted dedicated server
Running the server on your own hardware offers maximum control and no hosting subscription, but you are responsible for CPU and RAM headroom, SSD storage, operating-system updates, backups, firewall rules, port forwarding and ISP limitations. Your players’ routes still depend on your home connection and geographic location. A strong computer cannot remove a CGNAT restriction or a poor ISP path.
Managed dedicated hosting
A managed host takes responsibility for hardware, networking, maintenance, uptime and automatic updates. You still need to choose a region close to most players, confirm available CPU and RAM, check mod support and understand backup and restart policies. No provider can guarantee one universal ping for every player; geography and last-mile routing remain decisive.

Friend-hosted session
This option has the least setup for a casual group but the most dependence on one person’s PC, internet connection and schedule. Rendering the game and running the server compete for resources. The world is unavailable when the host is offline, and router or NAT problems affect everyone trying to join.
| Hosting choice | CPU/RAM headroom | Network and NAT burden | Availability | Control and maintenance | Recurring cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Friend-hosted world | Shared with the host’s game; easiest to exhaust | Host must handle firewall, forwarding and ISP limitations | Usually online only while the owner plays | Simple setup, limited server-side control | No separate hosting bill stated |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | Can be sized for the measured workload | Owner handles UDP forwarding, NAT and routing | Can remain online while the owner is offline | Highest configuration control; owner handles updates and backups | Hardware and electricity costs; no universal figure stated |
| Managed dedicated host | Plan-dependent dedicated resources; verify specifications | Provider handles infrastructure networking, but region still affects routes | Designed for persistent uptime | More configuration than a friend-hosted world; provider handles maintenance and updates | Recurring plan price varies by provider and region |
A repeatable troubleshooting procedure
Use this order so that an expensive hardware change is not used to solve a routing problem.
Quick Recap
- Classify the symptom. Ask whether everyone experiences the delay or only one player. Record the in-game ping for each affected player, treating it as a rough guide.
- Reproduce it in a controlled area. Test an already generated base, then unexplored terrain. Note the player count, entities, mods and view distance.
- Set view distance near 12 chunks. Restart if required and repeat the same test before changing hardware.
- Inspect resources. Record CPU, memory, swapping and SSD activity during the spike. Remove or isolate expensive mods, logic and entities.
- Check the transport. Confirm QUIC traffic can reach the server over UDP 5520, or the custom UDP port selected with
--bind. Verify both the host firewall and router rule. - Audit the route. Look for double NAT, CGNAT and symmetric NAT. Remove unnecessary VPN adapters; use Tailscale when direct forwarding is impossible, accepting that a relay can add latency.
- Retest after one change. Keep a short log of the setting, date, affected players and result. This distinguishes a real improvement from normal variation.
- Move to dedicated hosting when the pattern is structural. Persistent worlds, more than a few friends, frequent owner-offline play and recurring resource saturation justify dedicated resources and managed networking.
Common mistakes that do not fix Hytale lag
- Opening TCP instead of UDP: Hytale’s QUIC transport requires UDP; a TCP-only rule leaves the real path blocked.
- Buying hardware before lowering view distance: excessive simulated area can overwhelm an otherwise adequate machine.
- Reading one player’s ping as server performance: that number may describe only the player’s ISP route or Wi‑Fi.
- Assuming a larger save causes a specific ping increase: published save-size examples describe disk usage, not latency.
- Promising a fixed millisecond improvement: official guidance provides qualitative outcomes, not controlled measurements for each intervention.
- Ignoring the update state: networking behavior can change while Hytale remains in active development; test all clients and the server on a compatible current release.
