In Microsoft Configuration Manager (often still called SCCM), a package/program is a straightforward way to run a defined command or task; an application adds software applicability and lifecycle controls such as detection, requirements, dependencies, and managed install or uninstall behavior. The “run as 32-bit process on 64-bit clients” setting is a separate choice: it changes the file-system and registry view the command or script sees, not whether the installer installs a 32-bit or 64-bit product.
SCCM package vs. application: what is the difference?
Packages and applications are different deployment models, not 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the same feature. Use the controls the job needs to choose between them.
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Run a defined command or administrative task | Package/program | A program captures command execution behavior and requirements. Microsoft documents packages and programs. |
| Install software with applicability rules, detection, dependencies, or managed install and uninstall behavior | Application | Applications use deployment types and deployment settings to manage software applicability and lifecycle. Microsoft’s application authoring guide describes the model. |
| Check whether a required application applies without installing it | Application simulation | Simulation evaluates application applicability, including detection, requirements, and dependencies; it does not perform the installation. Packages cannot be simulated this way. See Microsoft’s application deployment guidance. |
Packages run programs
A package defines one or more programs for the client to run. It is a practical fit for a defined command or task when the richer application controls are not needed.
Applications use deployment types
An application must have at least one deployment type. A deployment tells the Configuration Manager client how and when to install or uninstall the software. Applications can use detection, requirements, dependencies, and deployment settings to manage applicability and lifecycle. Depending on the deployment, users can install an application on demand when it is Available, or the client can install it automatically when it is Required.

What does “run as 32-bit process on 64-bit clients” mean?
On a 64-bit Windows client, the setting runs the deployment command or custom detection script in a 32-bit process context. That process sees the 32-bit file-system and registry locations rather than the native 64-bit view. Microsoft documents separate execution and detection context controls in the ConfigurationManager PowerShell reference.
This does not convert a 64-bit installer into a 32-bit installer, select the software’s architecture, or guarantee that a 32-bit product will be installed. It changes the process environment used to run the command or script. The installer determines the product it installs.

How 32-bit and 64-bit context affects paths and detection
On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit applications commonly install under Program Files, while 32-bit applications commonly install under Program Files (x86). Microsoft’s Microsoft Deployment Toolkit guidance describes this path distinction. A command or detection script must check the location and registry view that match the software’s actual installation.
Choose the install command’s context
Use 32-bit context when the installer command or its logic needs to see 32-bit locations. Use native 64-bit context when it needs native 64-bit locations. The right choice depends on the vendor installer and its behavior; the process setting alone does not establish which product architecture the installer deploys.

Choose the detection script’s context separately
Do not assume that setting the install command to run as 32-bit automatically makes every detection method correct. Configuration Manager has a separate control for running custom detection scripts as 32-bit processes on 64-bit clients. Align the detection script’s process view with where the installer writes the file or registry value the script checks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose and validate the model
- Decide whether the task needs application controls. For a defined command or administrative task without application-style applicability and lifecycle needs, start with a package/program. For managed software that needs detection, requirements, dependencies, or install and uninstall handling, start with an application.
- Inspect the vendor installer and its instructions. Determine what it installs and which file-system or registry locations its command and detection logic use. Do not infer product architecture from the 32-bit process setting.
- Set install and detection contexts deliberately. Choose the process view each command or custom detection script requires; evaluate them independently.
- Test on a representative client before broad deployment. Verify installation, detection, and uninstall behavior on the relevant 64-bit client, including the expected path or registry location.
- Use application simulation when appropriate. For a Required application deployment, simulation can evaluate applicability without installing the application. It is not available for packages.
Configuration Manager’s application guidance also warns that installing in system context while allowing users to interact with the installation is not a secure configuration. Account for this when configuring an interactive deployment.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating 32-bit context as an architecture selector: it changes the process view, not the installer’s product architecture.
- Using one context assumption for both installation and detection: custom detection has its own 32-bit execution control.
- Checking only one architecture-specific path: confirm where the installer actually writes its files or registry data.
- Choosing an application for every command, or a package for every installer: choose based on whether applicability and lifecycle controls are required.
