To translate an SCCM (Configuration Manager) error, first identify the code’s format and likely owner, then look it up in that subsystem’s reference. If the value is a negative decimal number, convert it to hexadecimal and remove a leading FFFFFFFF sign-extension prefix when present. The resulting message is a clue—not a root-cause diagnosis—so use the failed workflow and its logs to find what happened.
How to translate an SCCM error code
- Preserve the original value. Copy it exactly, including a minus sign, any
0xprefix, and leading zeroes. Note where it appeared and what operation failed. - Convert negative decimal values to hexadecimal. Microsoft’s example converts
-2147012889toFFFFFFFF80072EE7. Remove the leadingFFFFFFFFsign-extension prefix to expose80072EE7; do not discard digits arbitrarily. Microsoft’s error-code description procedure explains this method. - Use the prefix as a family clue. Microsoft describes
80072as typically WinHTTP,8009as typically CryptoAPI, and800402or800403as typically Configuration Manager. These prefixes suggest where to look; they do not prove the source or cause. - Look up the code in the owning subsystem’s reference. Match the code to the component and failing workflow rather than relying on a catch-all SCCM list.
- Inspect the relevant log around the same time. Compare the code with its timestamp, component, and neighboring events. Those details help connect a translated message to the actual failure.
Worked example: a name-resolution message
In Microsoft’s example, -2147012889 becomes FFFFFFFF80072EE7, then 80072EE7 after removing the sign-extension prefix. The trailing hexadecimal value 2EE7 is decimal 12007, which maps to ERROR_WINHTTP_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED: “The server name cannot be resolved.” That describes the reported error; it does not, by itself, establish why the name could not be resolved in that incident.

Which reference and logs should you use?
The same Configuration Manager report can surface errors from different systems. Choose the lookup path using both the likely code owner and the operation that failed.
| Likely source or workflow | Where to look next |
|---|---|
WinHTTP or network-related code, often beginning 80072 |
Use Microsoft’s conversion procedure and the WinHTTP error reference, then inspect logs for the affected workflow. A prefix is only a typical family clue. Microsoft’s error-code description procedure |
CryptoAPI or certificate-related code, often beginning 8009 |
Use the appropriate Windows error reference and check certificate and component context. Microsoft notes that Trace32 can display the code directly. Microsoft’s error-code description procedure |
Configuration Manager-specific error, often beginning 800402 or 800403 |
Consult the Configuration Manager error reference relevant to the component and version, and inspect client or provider logs as appropriate. Microsoft’s error-code description procedure; Configuration Manager error handling |
| Windows or Win32 system error | Check Microsoft’s Win32 system error reference. Win32 error values occupy 0x0000 through 0xFFFF; protocol specifications can expand or modify common definitions. Win32 system error codes |
| WMI or SMS Provider exception | Review the exception details and the relevant extended-status data; for SMS Provider errors, check SMSProv.log. Configuration Manager error handling |
| Software update scan failure | Start with WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log. The former reports what the Windows Update Agent returned; the latter may provide more detail. Troubleshoot software update scan failures |
| Application installation failure | Use the application-installation error reference to distinguish Configuration Manager, Windows, and WMI entries, then follow the application troubleshooting guidance and the relevant Windows or Windows Installer reference. Application installation error codes |
Identify which component owns the code
Configuration Manager’s error-handling guidance distinguishes WMI errors from SMS Provider errors. WMI can report an instance of __ExtendedStatus; the SMS Provider uses SMS_ExtendedStatus, which derives from it. In managed SMS Provider code, SmsQueryException carries Configuration Manager-specific exception information and may contain WMI exceptions; SmsConnectionException indicates a lost WMI connection. The same guidance points to SMSProv.log for SMS Provider error details. Microsoft’s Configuration Manager error-handling reference
#1 Best Overall
Do not confuse the Configuration Manager product with Windows API Configuration Manager device-configuration codes. For example, Microsoft documents the ConfigManagerErrorCode property on SMS_Processor as a Windows API Configuration Manager error code; the overlapping name does not make it an SCCM deployment or provider error. Use the message to guide diagnosis, not to guess the fix
A translated message describes what the code represents, but it does not establish the root cause. For example, “The server name cannot be resolved” does not determine whether the incident involved DNS, a proxy, an endpoint name, or another condition. Treat such possibilities as hypotheses to test against the component’s logs and configuration.

- Keep the original and converted values together to avoid transcription errors.
- Record the operation, component, timestamp, and client or site context, then read surrounding log entries for the same event.
- For an update scan, inspect both
WUAHandler.logandWindowsUpdate.log. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance groups some scan failures under missing or corrupted components and suggests starting with the Windows Update Troubleshooter; use repair or reset steps only when the observed conditions support them. Microsoft’s software update scan guidance - For a broader incident, use Microsoft’s diagnostic log and information collection guidance to identify relevant client, site, Windows, and operating-system deployment material. - If a Microsoft reference does not map the code, identify the emitting component before applying a generic fix; the code may be Windows- or third-party-specific. Microsoft’s error-code description procedure
When a program needs the system message
For application code, Windows provides FormatMessage with FORMAT_MESSAGE_FROM_SYSTEM to retrieve system message text. This is a programming interface, not a guarantee that every HRESULT or product-specific code has a useful system message. Microsoft’s FormatMessage reference

Check that an error table or repair procedure applies to the installed Configuration Manager branch, client or server version, and failing component. A decoded value is a starting point for tracing the event, not a substitute for reviewing the logs.
