Biggest Refrigerator Recalls in America: What the Verified Counts Show

The largest figure in the available record is 9 million units, but it refers to a 2000 initiative covering old chest freezers from multiple manufacturers—not a single household refrigerator recall. Among household refrigerators, the largest count identified is about 1.6 million units in Maytag’s 2009 recall. The ranking rule here is the number of affected units stated, not the number of injuries or the severity of the hazard. The available evidence verifies five leading counts, not nine, so the remaining places are left unranked rather than guessed.

What was the biggest refrigerator recall?

It depends on whether “refrigerator” is being used narrowly or as shorthand for refrigeration appliances. The largest item in the broader record is a multi-manufacturer chest-freezer initiative announced October 24, 2000. It covered 9 million chest freezers manufactured before 1970, according to Fridge.com’s compilation measured October 1, 2026. The initiative addressed old lid latches that could trap children; Fridge.com reproduces a CPSC-attributed warning that children trapped inside can suffocate. See the compilation and its detail page, then consult the linked CPSC notice for official scope and instructions.

That freezer initiative is not a refrigerator-brand recall. For household refrigerators specifically, Home Recall Watch identifies Maytag’s March 10, 2009 recall as the largest count in its index: about 1.6 million units, CPSC notice 09-145. The number is reported by an independent index, not presented as an official CPSC ranking. Its refrigerator recall index is useful for orientation; the CPSC notice is the authority for determining whether a particular appliance is covered.

What are the five largest stated counts in the available record?

The following order uses affected-unit counts, with product categories kept distinct. Fridge.com’s October 1, 2026 compilation includes refrigerators, freezers, mini fridges and related cooling appliances; it is not a refrigerator-only ranking.

The counts and product categories in the table come from Fridge.com’s historical compilation; the Maytag figure is also listed by Home Recall Watch. These are secondary indexes based on CPSC data, not a CPSC-published top-five list. The available record establishes only these five leading counts, so it does not support a verified “top nine.”

How many refrigeration products have been recalled?

Fridge.com counted 40 refrigeration-related notices in a record spanning March 1977 through January 2026, measured October 1, 2026. Its categories include refrigerators, freezers, mini fridges and related cooling appliances. Thirty notices state an affected-unit count; those counts add up to 13,466,528. Ten notices do not state a count, so that sum is not a complete total of all affected products. These figures describe the compilation’s records and counting method, not every refrigerator recall in America across all time.

The same compilation lists 25 named brands, with Frigidaire appearing in four notices. That is a historical notice count, not a comparison of current product safety or reliability. Its structured remedy data covers only 19 notices: 13 list repair, four refund and three replacement. The categories overlap as reported in the compilation, and the subset does not establish the remedy for any individual recall. See the statistics page for its stated scope.

How can you check whether your refrigerator was recalled?

  1. Find the appliance’s rating label. Record the full model and serial numbers, along with any date code. The label’s location varies by appliance; check the product documentation if it is not readily visible.
  2. Search the recall notice or a recall index. Home Recall Watch’s index can help locate notices and model information. An approximate model-name match alone does not prove that your unit is affected.
  3. Compare every identifier the notice specifies. Check model, serial range and date code, as applicable. A notice may cover only a subset of products sold under a model family.
  4. Confirm the match and instructions on CPSC. Use the individual official notice to establish coverage, hazard information and the remedy. CPSC provides recall-data resources on its CPSC Data page.

What should you do if your refrigerator is covered?

Follow the official notice’s safety directions and remedy exactly. Depending on the recall, the remedy may be a repair, refund or replacement; the remedy counts in a historical compilation do not predict what a specific consumer should do. Do not attempt a do-it-yourself repair unless the notice specifically instructs you to do so. If the notice directs consumers to stop using or unplug the appliance, follow that instruction and contact the manufacturer or recall administrator through the channel named in the notice.

For example, Home Recall Watch’s page for the 2026 Galanz retro-refrigerator recall reports about 121,680 affected units and says consumers should unplug covered refrigerators and stop using them while awaiting a free in-home repair. Because instructions can change and the coverage depends on identifiers, confirm the current details in CPSC notice 26-649 rather than relying on an index summary. The index entry is available here.

Why isn’t this a ranking by injuries or deaths?

Affected-unit counts can be compared when the notices report them, but incident figures are not consistently established for the recalls listed here. CPSC describes NEISS as a probability sample used to estimate product-related emergency-room injuries; it is not a refrigerator-recall-specific count. Without comparable reporting periods and definitions for every notice, injury or death totals would not provide a sound alternative ranking. CPSC explains the system on its NEISS Injury Data page.
