Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Windows says it is scanning and repairing drive C:, there is no universally safe, documented way to bypass an active scan. The right next step depends on whether Windows still starts, whether the message appears during startup, or whether you suspect damaged Windows files. Note the exact screen message and your Windows version before acting; use the repair path that matches the problem rather than forcing a skip.
First identify what is happening
Windows uses different tools for disk errors, startup failures, and damaged system files. A scan message alone does not establish that the drive is healthy, that the scan is harmless, or that the same fix applies to every case.

- Windows starts, and you can open the desktop: use the documented CHKDSK repair process for drive errors.
- Windows will not start or is stuck in a restart loop: open Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and try Startup Repair.
- Windows starts but system files may be damaged: use DISM and System File Checker (SFC), which address Windows image and protected system-file problems—not physical disk health.
Write down the full message and when it appears. Windows 10 and Windows 11 screens and recovery paths can vary by release. Microsoft’s recovery guidance covers both versions; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft: Windows Recovery Environment

Can you safely bypass the scan?
Microsoft’s guidance documents repair and recovery procedures, but it does not establish a universal, safe way to cancel or bypass an active scan. Avoid unverified registry edits, commands, or forced shutdowns presented as guaranteed skip methods. If Windows is responsive, allow the process to finish before using the appropriate repair steps below. If the computer cannot boot, use WinRE rather than relying on a skip workaround.

If Windows starts: check drive C: with CHKDSK
For drive errors, Microsoft’s documented procedure is to run CHKDSK from an administrator Command Prompt, then restart if Windows asks to schedule the repair. This procedure is described in Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guidance; it is not a diagnosis of physical drive health. Microsoft Support: Fix Windows Update errors
- Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
- Enter
chkdsk /f C:and press Enter. Keep the space betweenchkdskand/f. - If Windows says it cannot run the check now and asks to schedule it, confirm the prompt and restart the computer.
If the scan keeps recurring, this command alone does not show whether the cause is a persistent file-system issue or a failing device. Back up important files you can access, and consult the computer or drive manufacturer for hardware-specific diagnosis.

If Windows will not boot: run Startup Repair in WinRE
Startup Repair is intended for certain Windows startup problems. Microsoft says it can diagnose and attempt repairs involving issues such as missing or damaged system files, damaged boot configuration data, MBR problems, incompatible drivers, and registry errors. It is not a general method for skipping a disk scan. Microsoft Support: Startup Repair
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOpen Startup Repair
- Enter WinRE. Depending on what still works, use Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, let Windows enter automatic recovery after repeated failed starts, or start from Windows installation media and choose Repair your PC.
- In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions.
On an encrypted device, have the BitLocker recovery key available; Windows may require it to use Startup Repair. If the repair does not resolve the boot problem, use the report it provides to choose the next supported recovery option rather than repeatedly applying unrelated fixes. Microsoft’s recovery-options guidance describes the available routes into WinRE and warns that some recovery choices can lose data. Microsoft Support: Recovery options in Windows

Use installation media only to reach recovery tools
If the PC cannot start and WinRE is unavailable, Windows installation media created on another working computer can provide a route to Repair your PC and recovery tools. A USB flash drive used this way is a carrier for the media, not a disk-repair tool; it does not repair a failing internal drive by itself. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for creating and using installation media. Microsoft Support: Create installation media for Windows
If Windows files may be corrupted: use DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC address Windows image and protected system-file problems. SFC scans protected Windows files and replaces corrupted files with a cached copy; it does not test whether the physical drive is healthy. Follow Microsoft’s repair instructions for the applicable Windows version. Microsoft Support: Use the System File Checker tool

- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Follow Microsoft’s DISM instructions, then run
sfc /scannow. - Leave the Command Prompt window open until verification reaches 100 percent, then review the result.
Before resetting or reinstalling Windows
Choose the least disruptive supported recovery option that fits the problem. These choices are not interchangeable, and some can remove files or apps. Microsoft’s warning is direct: “Before you start: Some recovery options can result in data loss.” Microsoft Support: Recovery options in Windows
- System Restore: use it to return system settings and Windows files to an earlier restore point; review Microsoft’s explanation of its effects before proceeding.
- Reset this PC: read the selected reset option carefully, because its effect on personal files and apps depends on the option chosen.
- Recovery or installation media: use the relevant Microsoft procedure and check what it will change before confirming.
- Reinstall Windows: Microsoft lists this when other recovery options fail or infection is suspected and warns that reinstalling from installation media removes everything from the device. Back up accessible important files first.
If Windows remains usable, copy important files somewhere safe before attempting disruptive recovery. If it will not start, consider whether files can be recovered before resetting or reinstalling; manufacturer support can advise on hardware-specific diagnosis.
