ScamShield is an AI-assisted scam-triage project described by its author as a way to help an older family member assess suspicious messages and know what to do next. It combines message and screenshot inspection with conversational guidance, recovery steps, and family alerts. It is a project—not an independently validated consumer security product—and its author says the intended user had not yet tested the interface.
What ScamShield is designed to do
Farhan’s project article frames ScamShield around a practical question: “Is this real, or is someone trying to trick me?” The intended user is the author’s paternal grandmother, or “dadi,” who uses WhatsApp and SMS and would benefit from calm, plain-language guidance. That is a design goal, not evidence that the interface has been proven accessible or effective for older adults.

The author describes these core features:
- Multimodal screenshot scanning: inspect screenshots of messages and other visual material.
- Text and URL inspection: assess message text and potentially suspicious links.
- Conversational assistant: ask questions about a situation, such as what to do when someone claiming to be police says a parcel contains drugs.
- Recovery wizard: find reporting steps and draft a complaint after a suspected scam.
- Family alerts: share information through Discord or WhatsApp.
The article also mentions a quiz, threat-intelligence feed, security-hygiene scorecard, phone-carrier lookup, and crowdsourced reporting. These are feature descriptions from the project’s author, not independently verified capabilities. Read Farhan’s ScamShield project article.
How the author says it works
The project article describes a browser client and a Flask API, with Gemma accessed through Google’s API and an option to run locally with Ollama. According to the author, the hosted demo sends requests to Google’s API, while local mode processes images on the user’s machine.
Those are author-reported architecture and privacy claims. The application and its data flows have not been independently inspected or audited here, so they should not be treated as a security or privacy guarantee. The article does not establish verified hardware requirements, current model details, or whether every listed feature is available in a particular build.
What the reported tests do—and do not—show
Farhan reports 54 passing automated tests and 100% agreement across four built-in synthetic examples: two labeled safe and two labeled scam. The author also reports a median latency of 8.07 seconds for those four examples. These results describe a small, synthetic test set; they are not a real-world scam-detection accuracy rate, an independent benchmark, or evidence that ScamShield will identify live scams reliably.
The author also says the grandmother who inspired the design had not tested the interface and that there were no real user quotes at the time of the article. The planned next step was a sit-down handover. Accordingly, the project’s fit for older adults remains unestablished.
What to do if you suspect online financial fraud in India
If money has been lost or a financial transaction is at risk, report it promptly through India’s official channels rather than waiting for an AI tool to decide whether the case is genuine. The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal directs people to call 1930 for immediate reporting of cyber financial fraud and also provides an online reporting route.
Rank #3
- Call 1930 promptly if you are reporting cyber financial fraud. The official portal describes a follow-up complaint process after the call; follow the instructions you receive.
- Use the official reporting portal if you need to submit a report online: National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
- Have relevant details ready. The portal’s instructions identify bank or wallet information and transaction details as information to have available. See the official citizen instructions for reporting financial cyber fraud.
Prompt reporting is important, but neither the portal instructions nor the project article establish a guaranteed recovery window or promise that funds will be recovered or a transaction stopped.

The available account supports treating ScamShield as an early-stage project with an understandable purpose, not as a proven substitute for independent judgment, bank guidance, or official reporting. Its author reports a limited set of synthetic tests, but there is no established representative detection rate, independent evaluation, or older-adult usability study in the cited material. The hosted and local modes are described by the author, but their privacy and security properties have not been independently verified.
