Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For most new video-streaming products, start with a well-modularized monolith and split out services only when a capability has a demonstrated need for independent scaling, releases, reliability isolation, or team ownership. Treat video delivery as a separate scaling problem: a more scalable application backend does not, by itself, deliver video efficiently to viewers.
What the choice changes—and what it does not
A monolith packages application capabilities into one deployable application. A modular monolith still keeps those capabilities in explicit internal modules, but they run and are released together. Microservices divide capabilities into separately deployable services that communicate across network boundaries.
That difference affects how teams scale, release, and operate application capabilities; it does not determine how video is distributed to viewers. A streaming platform also needs a delivery path for the video itself. Netflix’s historical account describes AWS regions supporting infrastructure capacity and its separate Open Connect CDN delivering video bits to devices. That is an example of separating application infrastructure from delivery, not proof that one backend style guarantees playback quality. Netflix’s account of its cloud migration
How the architectures compare
| Decision area | Modular monolith | Microservices |
|---|---|---|
| Scaling | Scale the application as a unit; capabilities with different loads may scale together. | Scale a service independently when its workload materially differs from others. |
| Communication and latency | Modules can call one another in-process, avoiding network hops between them. | Service-to-service calls cross network boundaries, adding latency and potential failure points. |
| Operations and debugging | Fewer separately deployed components generally mean fewer deployments and runtime components to coordinate. | Requires operational ownership across more components, plus visibility into interactions and distributed failures. |
| Team ownership | Fits a team that can coordinate changes across the application. | Can support team autonomy when service boundaries match durable ownership. |
| Data and change | A unified application can make early changes and transactions simpler. | Independent services often require clearer data ownership and more care with consistency across service boundaries. |
| Evolution | Explicit modules leave room to extract a pressured capability later. | Best adopted selectively; each boundary brings ongoing operating costs. |
These are architectural trade-offs, not measured results for a particular streaming workload. AWS advises choosing workload segmentation case by case and cautions that distributed compute can complicate latency goals, debugging, tracing, and operations. - Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Separate application scale from video delivery
A streaming service has multiple kinds of work, and they do not necessarily belong in the same scaling decision. Client-facing APIs may handle sign-in, playback-session setup, or requests for metadata. Other backend capabilities may manage the catalog, identity, recommendations, ingestion, encoding orchestration, or storage. The video delivery path then moves encoded content to devices.
These are candidate areas to evaluate, not a mandatory list of services. Start by identifying which workloads are actually constrained and where the constraint occurs. If the video-delivery path is the bottleneck, splitting catalog or account code into microservices will not, on its own, solve it. Netflix’s account is useful here because it distinguishes regional cloud infrastructure from Open Connect’s role in delivering video; it is a historical, qualitative example rather than a current capacity benchmark. When a modular monolith is the better starting point
Keep the application together while product boundaries are still changing, the team is small enough to coordinate changes, or different capabilities do not yet show distinct scaling or reliability needs. This avoids paying the ongoing cost of operating separate services before their independence provides a practical benefit.
“Monolith” need not mean an undifferentiated codebase. Keep modules explicit, define their responsibilities, and avoid making a future extraction depend on untangling every part of the application. AWS specifically recommends keeping a monolith modular enough to evolve toward service-oriented architecture or microservices as adoption grows. AWS Well-Architected, REL03-BP01

Signals that a capability may deserve its own service
Consider extracting a capability when evidence shows that its independence solves a real problem, rather than because microservices are a popular default. Useful signals include:
- It repeatedly needs a different amount or pattern of capacity from the rest of the application.
- Its reliability needs justify isolating failures from other capabilities.
- It needs a distinct release cadence that is difficult to support in the shared application.
- A team has clear, durable ownership and can operate it independently.
These signals are prompts to evaluate a boundary, not automatic requirements to create a service. Compare the benefit with the extra network interactions, observability work, and operational responsibility that come with separation. AWS’s segmentation guidance

How to migrate selectively
- Locate the constraint. Identify the capability associated with a scaling, reliability, release, or ownership problem. Do not assume that the application backend and video delivery have the same bottleneck.
- Define the boundary. Give the capability an explicit interface and decide what it owns. Check that extracting it will not create unclear responsibility for shared data or behavior.
- Prepare to operate it. Add service-level telemetry and plan for network failures and the debugging of interactions across components before relying on the new boundary.
- Extract one capability. Keep the rest of the application intact so the change addresses a specific need without making the entire system distributed at once.
- Evaluate the result. Compare whether the original operational or scaling problem improved with the added operating cost and any effect on user-facing latency. Continue only when the boundary earns its cost.
This incremental approach reflects AWS guidance to segment workloads case by case. Netflix’s account also describes redundancy, graceful degradation, and production drills as part of its cloud approach; those are reliability practices, not benefits that arise automatically from adopting microservices. AWS Well-Architected guidance and Netflix’s account
Choose boundaries for the workload and team
Choose a modular monolith when a single coordinated application is sufficient and service independence would add more operational work than useful autonomy. Choose microservices where a well-defined capability has a demonstrated reason to scale, change, fail, or be owned independently—and where the team can manage the distributed system that results. In either case, assess the application backend and the video-delivery path separately.
