On an original Nintendo Switch, a game card can reduce how much of a game’s base software must be stored on the console, while an eShop purchase downloads software to the console or a microSD card. Neither format guarantees that no extra download will be needed: some physical releases also require additional data. Save data stays in the console’s system memory with either format.
How the formats differ
| Decision | Game card | eShop download |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game software is | The card carries the physical release’s software, but a particular game may still require downloaded data. Check its packaging. | The software is downloaded to console storage or microSD. Check the eShop listing for the game’s storage requirement. |
| Starting or changing games | The relevant card must be inserted to play. Switching to another card game may mean swapping cards. | Once installed, select the game from the HOME Menu; no card swap is needed. |
| Where save data is stored | In the console’s system memory, not on the game card. | In the console’s system memory, not on the microSD card. |
| Storage needs | Some physical releases require additional storage or downloads. | Downloaded software uses console or microSD storage. Updates and DLC also use storage. |
Nintendo Support confirms that save data is stored in system memory regardless of whether software is played from a card or downloaded, and that save data cannot be copied to microSD. The card-swapping and HOME Menu differences are practical consequences of the formats, not results of a comparative Nintendo test. Nintendo Support: save data and physical or digital games

What a microSD card can—and cannot—store
For the original Nintendo Switch family—Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED—a microSD card can store downloaded software, software updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured video. When a card is inserted, it becomes the default location for downloadable software. It cannot store or back up game save data; saves remain in system memory.
Nintendo lists support for microSD cards up to 2 GB, microSDHC cards from 4–32 GB, and microSDXC cards from 64 GB–2 TB. Nintendo recommends UHS-I compatibility and gives a recommended transfer speed of 60–95 MB/s, noting that higher transfer speed is better for gameplay experience. Nintendo also recommends using one microSD card with the system: software kept across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card. Nintendo Support: microSD card FAQ

Do game cards still need downloads?
Sometimes. A physical card may contain playable software, but some releases need additional data to access the full game. Nintendo says extra storage requirements can apply to both physical and digital versions, and that requirements vary by game. Do not assume that a physical copy includes everything needed just because the game is on a card.
Check the physical package for a card release’s requirements or the eShop listing for a download. Nintendo does not provide one universal game-size figure; the relevant requirement is the one listed for the specific title and edition at purchase time. Which format fits your priorities?
Choose a game card when
- You prefer a tangible game medium and are comfortable carrying and inserting the card.
- You want to avoid downloading the base software when the particular release contains it.
- You have checked whether that release needs extra data or storage.
Choose an eShop download when
- You want to launch an installed game from the HOME Menu without handling or swapping cards.
- You have enough console or microSD storage for the software and any updates or DLC.
- You are comfortable tying access to the Nintendo Account used to purchase it and redownloading the software if needed.
Digital software can be archived or deleted to free storage without deleting its save data, and downloaded software can be redownloaded. That distinction can help when space is tight: removing software does not mean losing the game’s local progress. Nintendo Support: archiving or deleting downloadable software

Do not apply original Switch storage advice to Switch 2
This comparison covers the original Nintendo Switch family. Switch 2 uses microSD Express for software storage rather than original Switch-compatible microSD cards. Nintendo says Switch 2 has 256 GB of system storage, with some reserved for system use, and that no individual games currently require additional storage. Some Switch 2 physical releases use game-key cards: the card is used to download the full game data and must be inserted to start the game. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 guidance rather than applying the original Switch storage rules. Nintendo Support: microSD Express cards
