Can your SBA loan be forgiven? It depends on the loan type. Eligible existing Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans may still qualify for forgiveness. COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) loans must be repaid, although a separate EIDL Advance does not. Ordinary SBA 7(a) loans have no general borrower-forgiveness route in SBA’s program guidance; repayment follows the loan note and lender servicing. First identify the exact account or instrument—payment assistance and deferment are not the same as forgiveness.
Which SBA program do you have?
Check the original note, SBA loan number, account statement and prior lender or SBA correspondence. “SBA loan” can refer to products with different repayment and forgiveness rules. The distinctions below apply to U.S. programs; an account-specific decision must come from the relevant SBA channel or lender.

| PPP loan | Potentially, after application and review; forgiveness is not automatic. | SBA Direct Forgiveness Portal or the PPP lender. |
| COVID-19 EIDL loan | No. SBA says these loans are not forgivable and must be repaid. | SBA Loan Portal and COVID EIDL Servicing Center. |
| EIDL Advance | The Advance is distinct from an EIDL loan and does not have to be repaid. | Check the account and award records to confirm the instrument. |
| Ordinary 7(a) loan | SBA’s general 7(a) guidance describes lender-backed financing and repayment, not a general borrower-forgiveness route. | The lender or servicing center on the account. |
SBA program pages explain general rules; they cannot confirm your balance, application status or eligibility. Use the channel handling your specific account.
PPP: apply for forgiveness if you have not already
PPP stopped making new loans on May 31, 2021, but existing borrowers can still apply if eligible. SBA allows borrowers to apply through its Direct Forgiveness Portal, regardless of loan size, or through the lender that handled the loan. SBA’s PPP forgiveness guidance says borrowers may apply after using all proceeds for which they seek forgiveness.

Check both the application deadline and payment status
SBA guidance gives a deadline of up to five years from the date SBA issued the loan number. Separately, if you do not apply within 10 months after the last day of your covered period, payments stop being deferred and become due to the lender. The five-year limit is not a reason to assume payments remain deferred: check your covered-period dates, due date and account status with your lender or the portal.
Confirm eligible use and choose the right form
Forgiveness depends on the loan, how proceeds were used, employment facts, the application form and SBA or lender review. SBA’s COVID-era program guidance describes a covered period of 8 to 24 weeks and eligible payroll and specified nonpayroll costs, alongside employee-retention criteria. It does not guarantee forgiveness to every borrower.

- For loans of $150,000 or less, Form 3508S does not require additional documentation to be submitted with the application. Keep relevant records in case of review or audit.
- For loans over $150,000, Forms 3508 or 3508EZ require supporting records. Follow the instructions for the form that applies to your loan.
The $150,000 threshold and form requirements are stated in SBA’s PPP forgiveness guidance, last updated October 3, 2024. For program background, see SBA’s COVID-era programs page.

- Find your SBA loan number, original loan documents, lender details and covered-period dates.
- Reconcile the amount you are requesting with eligible payroll and nonpayroll use, and assemble the records required by your form.
- Apply through the Direct Forgiveness Portal or your lender. Save the confirmation and monitor the application status.
- Continue making required payments unless and until the lender or SBA confirms forgiveness or otherwise tells you what is due.
COVID-19 EIDL: the loan is repayable; the Advance is different
SBA’s COVID-19 EIDL page states: “These loans are not forgivable and must be repaid.” That rule concerns the EIDL loan, not the separate EIDL Advance, which does not have to be repaid. Using loan proceeds for eligible business expenses does not turn an EIDL loan into a forgivable loan.

The pandemic EIDL program is closed to new applications and increase requests. SBA stopped accepting new applications on January 1, 2022, and closed the original RAPID application portal on May 16, 2022. Existing borrowers can use the SBA Loan Portal for account status, statements, payments and servicing actions.
Payment assistance reduces installments, not principal
SBA guidance says eligible existing COVID-19 EIDL borrowers may request a 50% payment reduction for six months. Listed conditions include that the loan is current and less than 90 days past due when the request is made, the business remains open and operating, neither the borrower nor owners are in active bankruptcy, and the difficulty is a temporary cash-flow issue.

Interest is not waived during the reduced-payment period; it continues to accrue and can increase the eventual balance or balloon payment. This is temporary payment assistance, not forgiveness. Review the eligibility conditions and resulting cost before requesting it, and confirm your account’s terms with the COVID EIDL Servicing Center.
Steps for an EIDL account
- Confirm whether your records show an EIDL loan, an EIDL Advance or both.
- Retrieve the note and latest statement, then check the balance and next due date in the SBA Loan Portal.
- Ask the COVID EIDL Servicing Center about available servicing actions and payment assistance for your account.
- If considering reduced payments, check the listed eligibility conditions and account for continuing interest.
7(a): follow the note and work with the lender
SBA describes 7(a) as its primary business loan program, in which SBA guarantees loans made by participating lenders to eligible small businesses. It is not PPP. Most 7(a) term loans are repaid monthly with principal and interest, generally from business cash flow. Fixed-rate installments remain level; variable-rate payment amounts can change. See SBA’s 7(a) loan overview.
The general program page does not decide what relief, if any, is available on an individual note. Contact the lender or servicing center listed on your account about your payment schedule, balance, payoff amount, hardship request or possible modification. Do not apply PPP forgiveness rules to an ordinary 7(a) loan. If your account is in a special servicing or default process, identify the specific program and get account-specific guidance.
Where to check status and get help
- PPP: Use the Direct Forgiveness Portal or contact the lender that handled the PPP loan. SBA says its PPP forgiveness assistance line serves applicants using the direct portal; other PPP questions should go to the lender. Contact options are on SBA’s contact page.
- COVID-19 EIDL: Use the SBA Loan Portal for status, statements and payments; contact the COVID EIDL Servicing Center for loan-specific servicing questions.
- 7(a): Contact the lender or servicing center shown on the account. SBA portal payments apply only to SBA-purchased, SBA-serviced 7(a) loans.
- Payments: SBA says it accepts electronic payments only from October 1, 2025 onward. Verify the payment channel for your specific account before sending funds on the SBA payment page.
- Business counseling: SBA Resource Partners—including SCORE, Small Business Development Centers, Women’s Business Centers and Veterans Business Outreach Centers—can provide small-business counseling. They do not replace an account determination by your lender or SBA, or individualized legal or tax advice. See SBA’s COVID-era programs page for program resources.
Keep the note, statements, payment history and relevant business records. For PPP, retain the records required by the applicable form instructions; for EIDL and 7(a), keep documents relevant to payments, business use and servicing requests.
