To save an image from a webpage in desktop Chrome, right-click it and select Save image as. Then check the downloaded file: if it is not already JPEG, convert it with an image app such as Preview on Mac. Renaming a file to end in .jpg does not convert its contents.
Download the image in desktop Chrome
- Open the webpage containing the image in Chrome.
- Right-click the image and select Save image as.
- If Chrome asks where to save it, choose a folder and click Save. If no prompt appears, check Chrome’s configured Downloads location or the download tray. Chrome’s settings can also be configured to ask where to save each file. See Google’s Chrome download instructions.
This saves the image resource the webpage provides; it does not guarantee that the file is JPEG. Look at the saved filename: JPEG files commonly use .jpg or .jpeg, two extensions for the same format. If the format matters for an app or website, confirm it in an image application rather than relying only on the filename.

Convert the downloaded image to JPEG on a Mac
Apple’s Preview app can export a saved image as JPEG:

- Open the downloaded image in Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- In the Format menu, choose JPEG. Adjust the quality setting if it is available and suits your needs.
- Choose a name and location, then click Save.
These steps create a JPEG copy. Keep the original if you may need its original format or quality. Apple documents this workflow in Convert image file types using Preview on Mac.

Why the download may be WebP, PNG, or another format
A webpage can provide an image in a format other than JPEG, so downloading it does not automatically change its encoding. If the file is WebP, PNG, or another type, use an application’s export or conversion feature to make a JPEG. Do not simply change the extension: a filename ending in .jpg can still contain a non-JPEG image.
Browser menus and handling can differ. Firefox, for example, may save a supported image, open it in the browser, or hand it to a system application depending on the content type and configured action. For its current behavior, see Mozilla’s guide to file types and download actions.

Choose JPEG only when it fits the image

Before converting, consider whether the destination requires JPEG, whether transparency must be preserved, and whether lossy compression is acceptable. The MDN image format guide describes the formats’ properties and common extensions.
