To save a Matplotlib figure as a transparent PNG, call savefig on the figure and pass transparent=True:
fig.savefig("plot.png", transparent=True)PNG supports transparency, but Matplotlib does not enable it by default. Add the option to the particular export that needs a transparent background.
Save a complete plot as a transparent PNG
Here is a complete pyplot example:
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
fig, ax = plt.subplots()
ax.plot([1, 2, 3], [2, 4, 3])
fig.savefig("plot.png", transparent=True)Figure.savefig exports the composed figure, including its axes and plotted elements. Calling it on fig also makes explicit which figure is being saved when your code creates more than one. Matplotlib documents that transparent=True makes the saved figure background transparent when the output format supports it; PNG is a supported format. See the Matplotlib plot lifecycle guide.
Control output resolution and whitespace
Transparency, resolution, and cropping are separate settings. You can combine them when useful:

)dpicontrols the output resolution; by default, Matplotlib uses the figure’s DPI.bbox_inches="tight"crops the saved bounds to fit the plot, which can reduce surrounding whitespace. It is optional and does not turn transparency on.pad_inchessets the padding around a tight bounding box. The documented API default is 0.1 inch.

Choose the output format explicitly when needed
Including the .png extension in the filename lets Matplotlib infer the format. Alternatively, specify it directly:

fig.savefig("plot", format="png", transparent=True)If you omit the extension and do not specify format, the output format follows Matplotlib’s save configuration. The Matplotlib rcParams documentation lists savefig.transparent as defaulting to False, so set transparent=True on the export when transparency is required.
Figure export or image-array export?
Use fig.savefig for a composed Matplotlib figure. If your input is instead an image array—such as a two-dimensional scalar array or RGB(A) data—pyplot.imsave is the API documented for colormapping and saving that array. It is not a replacement for exporting a full plot with its axes and other figure elements. See matplotlib.pyplot.imsave documentation.

If the exported PNG still looks opaque
- Check that you called
savefigon the intended figure and thattransparent=Trueis included in that call. - Inspect the axes and individual artists if a rectangle remains behind the plotted data. The transparency option describes the saved figure background; it does not promise to make every explicitly colored patch, image, legend, or other artist transparent.
