The Tech Edvocate’s September 21, 2026 roundup names ten examples. Its accompanying story about a reportedly distorted bathroom sign in Marvel’s Wolverine is an allegation, not confirmation that the sign appeared as described or that AI was involved.
What the ten tools are meant to help with
The following is a map of the roles Matthew Lynch’s Tech Edvocate article assigns to each product, not a current vendor-specification audit or a head-to-head test. Capabilities, availability, terms, and licensing can change; check the vendor’s current documentation before choosing a tool or putting its output into a game.

| Tool named in the article | Example work it is described as assisting | Human review to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Runway | Image and video generation or manipulation for visual-effects and asset prototyping. | Check visual continuity, technical suitability, and whether the result can be used in the intended production context. |
| Midjourney | Exploring character, environment, weapon, and style concepts through image generation. | Make the art direction and final design decisions; review images for consistency and suitability. |
| ChatGPT and other large language models | First drafts, quest and dialogue ideation, lore, and narrative brainstorming. | Check voice, continuity, factual claims, originality, and fit with the game’s established world. |
| Unreal Engine 5 with MetaHuman Animator | Facial-performance capture and transfer to MetaHuman characters, as described by the article. | Assess whether the captured performance and resulting animation communicate the intended emotion and work in the scene. |
| ElevenLabs | Synthesized voice for NPCs, narration, audio logs, or temporary iteration audio, according to the article. | Review performance and pronunciation, and resolve rights and consent questions before production use. |
| Adobe Firefly | Generation and editing in Adobe creative workflows, including image, texture, and vector work, as described by the article. | Inspect details, consistency, and production readiness; check applicable terms for the specific workflow. |
| Blockade Labs Skybox AI | Prompt-generated 360-degree environments and backdrops, according to the article. | Check seams, spatial coherence, and whether a backdrop meets the project’s visual and technical needs. |
| Kits.AI | Music and sound-design generation, as described by the article. | Review the sound in context, including mix, timing, mood, and rights for the intended use. |
| Luma AI Genie | Early-stage 3D concepts from prompts or images, according to the article. | Evaluate geometry, detail, and whether the result is usable in the project’s actual 3D workflow. |
| Synthesia | Presenter-style video for tutorials, marketing, or informational content, as described by the article. | Check the script, presentation, and permissions for any people, voices, or other inputs used. |
The categories are not interchangeable. Some examples concern ideation, some concern production workflows, and some concern material outside a game’s playable content, such as tutorials or marketing. The article does not establish that all ten products are generative-AI systems in the same sense, nor that any one will fit a particular studio’s pipeline.

How to choose a tool for a real production task
Start with a defined bottleneck, not with a product list. A tool that quickly produces a rough visual reference may be useful for a concept artist and still be unsuitable for creating a final, shippable asset. The relevant comparison is what task it supports, how well it fits existing production work, what cleanup it creates, and what its current terms allow.
#1 Best Overall
- Name the deliverable. Specify whether the team needs, for example, mood-board images, a dialogue draft, a temporary voice track, or a 360-degree backdrop. Keep exploratory material distinct from assets intended for release.
- Test fit in the actual pipeline. Check the output format and the handoffs to the tools and people that will edit, review, and integrate it. A promising sample is not evidence that the output is ready for production.
- Measure the work that remains. Have the relevant craft team assess correction, cleanup, continuity, and review needs. The Tech Edvocate article presents these outputs as starting points requiring human refinement; it provides no comparable tests showing how much time any tool saves.
- Review inputs and outputs before use. Check the vendor’s current terms and project requirements for data handling, permitted use, output rights, provenance, and any consent needed for a person’s voice, likeness, or performance. The roundup raises these issues but does not provide a vendor-by-vendor terms analysis or legal opinion.
- Set an approval owner. Name the person responsible for artistic, narrative, technical, and rights review as relevant. Keep enough information about the tool and inputs to answer internal questions about how a production asset was made.
For an indie team, the same approach can keep experiments manageable: choose one low-risk task, test a small batch, and compare the finished result—including human correction—with the existing method. Do not infer a return on investment from a generated draft alone.
What is—and is not—established about the Wolverine sign
The Tech Edvocate article reports that a distorted bathroom sign in Marvel’s Wolverine sparked controversy and connects the story to questions about AI. The official PlayStation material identified for this article does not confirm the reported sign or establish that generative AI played any role in it. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that Insomniac used AI to make the sign, or to treat the incident as confirmed on this evidence.

What official sources do establish is different. PlayStation describes Marvel’s Wolverine as an Insomniac-developed, single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure game for PS5, made with Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The PlayStation product page lists September 15, 2026 as its launch date. In a PlayStation interview published September 14, 2026, members of Insomniac’s creative, game, art, animation, and narrative leadership discuss creative decisions and character design.

Insomniac principal technical artist Nathaniel Bell also described location research for the game in a 2026 PlayStation Blog article. For a Japan trip, the account reports over 600 scans across four biomes, more than 100 miles walked, 5.6 TB of captured data, and 189,589 photos. Bell said: “High-resolution scans help capture the physical truth of a place: rock, bark, pavement, moss, metal, signage, soil, and all the small imperfections that make environments feel believable.” That is evidence of a documented reference-gathering workflow; it does not explain or verify the bathroom-sign allegation.

The useful lesson is not to assign an unverified error to AI. It is to make provenance, craft review, and accountability part of the asset pipeline—whether an asset is generated, scanned, hand-made, or assembled from multiple sources.
- Keep references and generated drafts distinguishable. Record what an asset is, where its inputs came from, and whether it is a draft or an approved production asset.
- Review small details deliberately. Signs, labels, interface text, and other legible elements deserve a readability and context check; visual plausibility alone is not enough.
- Match review to the risk. A throwaway internal placeholder and a prominent, player-facing asset do not need the same approval path. Apply stronger checks where errors, rights issues, or unwanted representation could have greater impact.
- Retain human ownership of creative decisions. Use generated work to explore or accelerate a task, not as a substitute for the people responsible for the game’s design, narrative, and quality.
- Check terms and provenance before committing. Confirm that inputs may be used as planned and that the output’s permitted use fits the project. A general tool roundup cannot answer those questions for every product, version, or workflow.
The Tech Edvocate article also raises intellectual-property and employment concerns. Those are real questions for studios to assess, but its roundup is not a legal analysis, an audit of vendor terms, or evidence that any named product caused the reported Wolverine issue.
