They measure satellites in different ways and serve complementary roles in geodesy. GNSS provides broad, routine receiver observations and daily network solutions; SLR adds optical range measurements that contribute distinctive information about Earth’s center of mass and the scale of the terrestrial reference frame. The right comparison depends on what you need to measure.
What SLR and GNSS measure
Satellite laser ranging
SLR measures the distance between a ground station and a satellite carrying a retroreflector. A station sends a laser pulse and records its return, producing an optical ranging observation. The International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS), a service of the International Association of Geodesy, coordinates SLR and lunar laser ranging data and related products for geodetic, geophysical, lunar, and planetary research. Its data are freely and openly available. IERS: International Laser Ranging Service

GNSS
GNSS geodetic solutions use signals transmitted by navigation satellites and measured by ground receivers. The International GNSS Service (IGS) is one of the services involved in providing GNSS products for geodesy. IERS: International GNSS Service
These are different kinds of observation: an SLR station ranges optically to a satellite target, while a GNSS receiver measures navigation signals. SLR is not a consumer laser distance meter, and the geodetic comparison is not the same as comparing consumer navigation devices.

Which is more accurate?
There is no meaningful universal winner without specifying the quantity and task. “Accuracy” might refer to the precision of a range observation, a satellite orbit, a station coordinate, the origin or scale of a global reference frame, or positioning accuracy for an end user. A number for one of these is not a fair substitute for a number for another.
The IERS materials cited here do not provide a matched, current benchmark comparing SLR and GNSS on the same observable under the same conditions. The defensible conclusion is therefore task-specific: compare a named product, epoch, processing method, geographic setting, and error metric. For global reference-frame work, the techniques are combined rather than ranked as alternatives; IERS describes the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) as benefiting from the distinct strengths of multiple space-geodetic techniques. What coverage means in this comparison
Coverage can mean where stations are located, which satellites they can observe, how frequently observations are processed, or whether a particular geodetic solution is available. The ITRF2020 input series illustrate differences in processing scale and cadence, but these are historical inputs to one reference-frame realization—not live counts of active stations or a universal coverage score.
| ITRF2020 input series | Solutions and stations reported | What the figures mean |
|---|---|---|
| GNSS | 9,861 daily combined terrestrial-frame solutions; 1,344 retained stations at 1,159 sites | IERS Technical Note 41 (2022) reports these as ITRF2020 GNSS inputs drawn from the IGS third reprocessing campaign. They are not a current IGS network census. |
| SLR | 244 fortnightly solutions for 1983.0–1993.0, followed by 1,459 weekly solutions | IERS Technical Note 41 (2022) reports the earlier segment using LAGEOS I and the later segment using LAGEOS I and II and ETALON I and II. These are ITRF2020 input schedules, not a statement of present-day service frequency. |
The GNSS series contains more reported stations and daily solutions in this ITRF2020 analysis, while the SLR series follows a different schedule. That comparison describes the inputs and processing of ITRF2020 only; it does not establish that one method measures more accurately or has better real-time coverage in every setting.

Why geodesy combines them
A terrestrial reference frame is not built from a single observation type. Combining techniques lets ITRF use their different strengths. SLR contributes important information to products tied to Earth’s center of mass and reference-frame scale; GNSS contributes broad station observations and routine network solutions. Together with other space-geodetic techniques, these observations help maintain a consistent global frame. The ILRS also supports Earth-orientation products through its coordinated ranging data and services. IERS: International Laser Ranging Service

| Need | More relevant technique | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Routine observations from a broad network of ground stations | GNSS | GNSS receivers measure navigation signals, and the ITRF2020 GNSS input included daily combined solutions. |
| Optical satellite-range observations | SLR | SLR stations range to satellites equipped with retroreflectors. |
| Information contributing to Earth-center-of-mass and frame-scale products | SLR | These are among the important geodetic contributions identified for SLR. |
| Constructing or maintaining a global terrestrial reference frame | Combined techniques | The ITRF benefits from the particular strengths of different space-geodetic methods. |
For a consumer choosing equipment, this geodetic comparison does not identify a product to buy. A consumer laser rangefinder does not perform satellite laser ranging, and a standalone navigation receiver is not a replacement for the coordinated SLR network or for multi-technique reference-frame processing.
