Sometimes—but only if the specific SATA port, connector or drive bay, firmware, driver, and operating system support hot-plugging. SATA or AHCI alone does not establish that a drive can be safely disconnected while the computer is running. If your system documentation does not confirm support for that exact connection, shut the computer down first.
What makes live removal possible?
Hot-plugging depends on the whole connection, not just the drive. Microsoft’s documentation describes port capability signals and notes that the hot-plug indicator applies to ports with suitable blind-mate connectors. That makes hot-plugging a declared capability of particular hardware and connector arrangements, not a guarantee for every SATA port. See Microsoft’s documentation on container IDs for eSATA devices.

The controller and port, firmware configuration, operating-system storage driver, and any bay or backplane all matter. A SATA hot-swap drive bay or caddy is not, by itself, proof that the host computer supports safe live removal.

AHCI and hot-plugging are related, but AHCI mode does not certify every port as hot-plug-capable. Check the system or motherboard manual for the exact port and any required firmware setting, connector, or bay. A firmware toggle alone is not a substitute for confirming that the hardware and operating system support the arrangement.

What can go wrong if you disconnect a drive?
Disconnecting a drive while files are open, applications or services are using it, or writes are still pending can interrupt operations and cause data loss. The operating system and driver’s removal and caching behavior matter as well as physical support for hot-plugging.
Microsoft explains that Windows’ external-storage removal policies handle write caching differently: Quick removal avoids disk write caching, while Better performance can cache writes and requires safe removal so pending operations finish. Microsoft warns, “If you remove or disconnect the device without following the safe removal instructions, you risk losing data.” That guidance concerns external storage; it illustrates the risk of pending writes, but does not establish one universal eject procedure for every internal SATA drive. Read Microsoft’s Windows default media removal policy guidance.

- Smart Space Saver: Hot-Swap supported HDD cage converts space of 3 x 5.25" CD-ROM / DVD-ROM to 4 x 3.5" or 2.5" SATA I, SATA II, SATA III, or SAS HDD tray
- Reliable Cooling System: Engineered with optimal cooling in mind. A single rear 120mm exhaust fan produces effective airflow and cooling
- SAS Compatibility: RSV-SATA-Cage-34 supports SAS 6Gbps only
- Storage Capacity: Accommodates 4 x SATA 3.5" HDD or 4 x SATA 2.5" HDD or SAS HDD for flexible storage configuration
- Hot-Swap Support: Supports Hot-Swap functionality with SATA I/II/III for convenient drive replacement without system shutdown
Microsoft’s storage-driver interface also shows that a device’s hot-plug configuration affects removal policy and caching: configuring a device as hot-plug sets an expected-surprise-removal policy and disables caching, while orderly removal may permit selective caching. These are system and driver behaviors, not a promise that any SATA connector is safe to unplug live. See Microsoft’s IOCTL_STORAGE_SET_HOTPLUG_INFO documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to check before removing a SATA drive
- Identify the exact connection. Consult the computer or motherboard manual for the SATA port, hot-plug setting, connector, and any required drive bay or backplane. Do not assume all ports on a system have the same capability.
- Confirm operating-system support. Check whether the drive is handled as removable and whether Windows exposes a safe-removal option. The presence or absence of an eject-menu entry does not, by itself, prove whether a particular internal SATA setup supports live removal.
- Stop use of the drive. Close files and applications using it, stop services that depend on it, and wait for disk activity to cease.
- Use orderly removal when available. If Windows provides safe removal for the device, use it and wait for the system to indicate that removal is safe. This helps allow cached operations to finish; it does not certify an otherwise unsupported internal connector.
- Shut down if support is uncertain. If the documentation does not explicitly support hot-swapping that connection, power off the computer before disconnecting the drive.
Never unplug the running system’s boot drive
Do not disconnect the drive the computer is currently using to run its operating system. The running system depends on that drive; hot-plug capability does not make removing an active boot drive safe.

Choosing a hot-swap bay or caddy
A hot-swap SATA bay or caddy can make drive exchanges practical only when it is physically compatible with the computer and the host port and system support hot-plugging. Before choosing one, verify the host’s documented port capability, operating-system and driver removal behavior, and the bay’s fit and electrical compatibility. A bay cannot add support the host lacks.
