SASE vs. SD-WAN: Which Network Security Model Fits Your Business?

SD-WAN manages WAN connectivity; SASE combines networking with broader security services. Compare scope, controls, integrations, and operations to find the right fit.

SD-WAN focuses on connecting and managing a wide-area network; SASE combines networking with a broader set of security services. They are not competing, mutually exclusive choices: SD-WAN can be one part of a SASE architecture. The right fit depends on whether your main need is WAN connectivity or secure access for branches, remote users, and on-premises resources, as well as your existing systems and ability to operate the design.

What is the difference between SASE and SD-WAN?

Software-defined wide-area networking (SD-WAN) is an approach to connecting and managing network paths among locations such as branches, data centers, and campuses. Its focus is the WAN layer: how sites connect and how traffic is managed. Implementations vary, and SD-WAN does not imply that every organization needs the same appliance or deployment model. NIST describes an example SD-WAN implementation in its Enterprise 1 Build 5 product guide.

Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) has a wider scope. NIST describes it as a converged network-and-security service that can include SD-WAN alongside secure web gateway (SWG), cloud access security broker (CASB), next-generation firewall (NGFW), and zero-trust network access (ZTNA). NIST’s 2025 guide says: “SASE delivers converged network and security as a service capability, including Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN), Secure Web Gateway (SWG), Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB), Next Generation Firewall (NGFW) and Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA).” NIST says SASE is primarily delivered as a service. See its 2025 Implementing a Zero Trust Architecture guide and 2022 secure-enterprise-network guide.

In practical terms, SD-WAN answers a connectivity and traffic-management need. SASE addresses a broader architecture question: how to provide network access and security controls across different users, locations, and resources.

When does SD-WAN fit better?

Consider SD-WAN when the immediate project is primarily about connecting or managing sites and network paths, rather than adopting a broader set of secure-access services. This may suit a business focused on branch connectivity that already has security services it intends to retain and manage separately.

Before choosing, establish what the specific SD-WAN service or product includes. The label alone does not tell you its security capabilities, deployment requirements, integrations, or how it handles the policies your organization needs. NIST’s implementation guide, for example, documents site and device setup, routing, security and availability policies, and alerts for one particular product build; those details describe that example, not every SD-WAN deployment.

When does SASE fit better?

Consider SASE when the target is a wider secure-access design for more than branch connectivity—for example, when remote users and on-premises resources are also in scope, or when the architecture needs networking alongside controls such as SWG, CASB, NGFW, and ZTNA. NIST’s implementation examples cover branch, remote-worker, and on-premises access use cases.

SASE is a category and architecture, not a guarantee that every service bearing the label includes the same functions or works with your existing environment. Confirm which components are actually included, how they integrate with identity and endpoint controls, and where policies and operational responsibilities sit.

How to decide which model fits your business

Use the following questions to define the requirements before comparing proposals. NIST’s guidance provides architecture and implementation examples, not a universal purchasing verdict.

1. Which sites, users, and resources are in scope?

List branches, campuses, data centers, remote workers, and on-premises applications or services that need access. A branch-connectivity project may have a narrower scope than one that also needs consistent secure access for remote users and other resources.

  • XGS 118 with 1 Year Xstream Protection - Next-generation firewall appliance with Xstream Protection subscription providing zero-day defense, cloud sandboxing, email filtering, intrusion prevention, and advanced reporting, managed through Sophos Central for unified policies and reporting.
  • 9 x 2.5 GE copper ports and 1 SFP fiber port, delivering up to 15.5 Gbps firewall performance for mid sized organizations.
  • Zero day protection with cloud sandboxing, email filtering, and advanced reporting for full enterprise coverage.
  • TLS inspection and next generation intrusion prevention block hidden threats in encrypted traffic and stop sophisticated attacks.
  • Includes Xstream Protection – Advanced security bundle with zero-day protection, cloud sandboxing, email filtering, and automated threat response, providing full coverage against the most sophisticated cyberattacks.

2. Which security functions must the design provide?

Specify whether the target includes SWG, CASB, NGFW, and ZTNA, or whether the immediate requirement is WAN connectivity and traffic management. Ask vendors to identify the actual services and capabilities proposed rather than relying on the SASE or SD-WAN label.

3. What must coexist with current investments?

Inventory existing WAN, firewall, identity, endpoint, and cloud controls. Determine which must remain, which need to integrate, and whether a proposed service changes their roles. NIST’s implementation builds combine different products and components as examples; they are not prescriptions for a particular business.

4. Who will operate the design?

Assign responsibility for routing, security policy, identity and device context, alerts, logging, and service changes. Include the team’s ability to configure and maintain the chosen model in the evaluation, not just the feature list. NIST’s product guide illustrates operational tasks such as routing, security and availability policies, authentication, and logging.

5. What is the comparable total cost?

Request organization-specific costs for the service, implementation, support, and migration, with the same users, sites, scope, and time period used across proposals. The NIST publications cited here do not establish a universal SASE-versus-SD-WAN cost comparison. Nor do the architecture labels alone establish guaranteed savings, latency reductions, or return on investment.

Can a business use SASE and SD-WAN together?

Yes. SD-WAN can serve as the networking component within a broader SASE architecture. NIST’s Enterprise 1 Build 5 example combines Prisma Access and Prisma SD-WAN and describes access use cases involving branches, remote users, and on-premises resources. That is an implementation example, not a NIST endorsement or a required design. NIST also documents other example builds, including ones using Zscaler and Microsoft SSE components, in its implemented builds index and Enterprise 1 Build 5 architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the Prisma example, NIST describes Prisma SD-WAN as a cloud-based service for connecting branches, data centers, and large campuses, and Prisma Access as a component for secure communications and access for remote users and enterprise networks. These are descriptions of that specific build, not requirements for every SASE design. Product names and integrations can change, so verify current capabilities against vendor documentation when evaluating a real deployment.

What the official guidance can—and cannot—tell you

NIST SP 800-215, finalized November 17, 2022, is a guide to secure enterprise networks. NIST SP 1800-35, published in final form on June 10, 2025, presents zero-trust implementation architectures. Together they help explain the scope of SASE and show how different components can be assembled. Neither publication ranks SASE and SD-WAN as alternatives or names a universal winner. The choice rests on your requirements, existing environment, integrations, and operating model.
