Firejail can make Firefox more isolated from your personal files, but it cannot promise a “no-trace” session or guarantee that Firefox cannot reach your LAN. Ordinary web browsing needs network access; Firejail’s --net=none option disables networking altogether. To browse the internet while blocking local destinations, you need a network policy suited to your Linux system and must verify that it works.
What Firejail can—and cannot—do
Firejail uses Linux isolation features and application profiles to restrict an application’s environment. The project describes it as “a SUID program that reduces the risk of security breaches by restricting the running environment of untrusted applications using Linux namespaces and seccomp-bpf” (Firejail project). That describes the mechanism, not an independent guarantee that every Firefox package is safely contained.

For Firefox, think of Firejail as an additional boundary that can reduce access to host files and constrain networking. The boundary depends on the installed Firejail version, the Firefox profile actually in use, package-specific behavior, permitted paths and sockets, and the network configuration. A profile error, exposed mount, desktop integration, kernel issue, or application escape vulnerability can weaken it.

| Goal | Firejail approach | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Use Firefox without network access | --net=none |
Networking is cut off; ordinary website browsing will not work. Firejail documents this as its no-network mode (Firejail usage documentation). |
| Browse public websites while blocking LAN destinations | An internet-capable network namespace plus an explicitly reviewed firewall or network filter | Requires a policy that allows intended external traffic and rejects local destinations. Validate it on your distribution, interface, IPv4 and IPv6 setup, DNS path, and firewall configuration; a namespace alone does not prove LAN isolation. |
Firejail’s Firefox guide includes examples using --net=eth0 and a separate netfilter file to drop local traffic while allowing outside traffic (Firefox guide). Treat those as project examples, not a universal drop-in rule: interface names, syntax, firewall behavior, IPv6, and DNS vary. Do not copy an old example as proof that local services are unreachable.

Limit the files Firefox can see
Firejail’s Firefox guide describes a restricted view of system files and directories, with personal information removed from the browser’s home view. Its --private mode can provide a temporary filesystem over the home directory; changes made within that private home are discarded when the sandbox exits (Firejail usage documentation). The installed Firefox profile determines what is actually visible, however. Downloads may be permitted for convenience, and custom whitelists intentionally expose selected host paths (Firefox guide; Firejail profiles).
A persistent directory supplied to --private=directory is persistent by design. Any separately allowed path can also retain files. These choices trade convenience for isolation:

- WatchGuard Firebox T45 tabletop appliances bring enterprise-level network security to small office/branch office and retail environments. These appliances are small-footprint, cost-effective security powerhouses that deliver all the features present in WatchGuard’s higher-end UTM appliances, including all security capabilities, such as AI-powered anti-malware, threat correlation, and DNS-filtering.
- 5G and Wi-Fi 6 enabled models available. Up to 3.94 Gbps firewall throughput, 5 x 1Gb ports, 30 Branch Office VPNs
- Zero-touch deployment makes it possible to eliminate much of the labor involved in setting up a Firebox to connect to your network - all without having to leave your office. A robust, Cloud-based deployment and configuration tool comes standard with WatchGuard Firebox appliances. Local staff connects the device to power and the Internet, and the appliance connects to the Cloud for all its configuration settings.
- Firebox T45 models make network optimization easy. With integrated SD-WAN and optional 5G technology, you can ensure failover to the cellular network, minimize disruptive connectivity, and establish secure and reliable connections for small offices.
- The Basic Security Suite includes all the traditional network security services typical to a UTM appliance: Intrusion Prevention Service, Gateway AntiVirus, URL filtering, application control, spam blocking and reputation lookup. It also includes our centralized management and network visibility capabilities, as well as our standard 24x7 support.
- Temporary private home: changes in that sandbox home disappear at exit, so it is unsuitable if you need to retain browser data there.
- Persistent private directory: browser data stored there remains between sessions; it is not a one-session cleanup mechanism.
- Whitelisted paths or downloads: useful for opening or saving files, but they deliberately make those locations accessible to the sandbox.
Before relying on a profile, inspect its filesystem rules and permitted paths. Also consider whether it exposes Firefox profile directories, desktop or display sockets, audio access, or other integration needed by your setup. Firejail’s profile documentation is the relevant reference for the rules shipped with the installed package, not a guarantee that every distribution packages identical defaults (Firejail profiles).

Temporary files are not the same as anonymous browsing
Firejail’s temporary home and Firefox Private Browsing solve different problems. Private Browsing is designed to avoid saving selected browsing information locally, but Mozilla notes that downloads remain on the computer and newly created passwords or bookmarks can be saved. Mozilla Support states: “Private Browsing does not make you anonymous on the Internet” (Mozilla Support: Private Browsing).

- BRANCH OFFICE SECURITY WITHOUT THE BRANCH OFFICE IT BUDGET - The T45 delivers 3.94 Gbps firewall throughput and full UTM protection for up to 20 users - enterprise-level security in a compact device small businesses can actually afford
- FIVE YEARS OF PROTECTION WITH ZERO RENEWAL HEADACHES - Basic Security Suite is included for 5 full years - your network stays protected without annual renewal notices budget requests or gaps in coverage for half a decade
- REMOTE WORKERS AND BRANCH SITES CONNECT BACK SAFELY - Built-in VPN with up to 30 encrypted tunnels keeps remote employees and satellite offices securely connected to company resources without a separate VPN appliance
- YOUR INTERNET STAYS UP WHEN YOUR ISP GOES DOWN - Built-in SD-WAN automatically fails over to your backup connection the moment a primary line drops - no one has to manually restart anything
- SEND IT TO ANY LOCATION WITHOUT SENDING IT STAFF - Zero-touch RapidDeploy lets you configure the device from HQ; local staff just connects power and internet and the appliance pulls its full configuration from WatchGuard Cloud
A normal persistent Firefox profile can retain disk cache (Mozilla documentation on HTTP caching). Firejail’s temporary home can discard data written inside that private home, but files written to exposed host paths are outside that cleanup. Neither mechanism removes records already held by websites, DNS resolvers, an ISP, or an employer. Mozilla also documents that Firefox features involving connections to Mozilla servers constitute data collection; that does not establish that telemetry is enabled in every Firefox build or configuration (Firefox telemetry documentation).
Set it up as a local security decision
There is no single safe launch command to recommend without knowing your Linux distribution, Firefox package, Firejail version, network interface, and firewall setup. Use this sequence to make the configuration deliberate rather than assuming a command provides a universal guarantee:

- ENTERPRISE SECURITY FOR YOUR HOME OFFICE OR SMALL TEAM - WITH WI-FI 6 BUILT IN - The T25-W combines a full security firewall with fast dual-band Wi-Fi 6 in one device - no separate router needed for home offices and small teams up to 5 users
- YOUR MOST DANGEROUS THREATS GET STOPPED BEFORE THEY START - Total Security Suite includes AI-powered malware detection Cloud sandboxing and DNS-level blocking - catching ransomware phishing and zero-day attacks before they ever reach a device on your network. 1-Year included with Gold 24x7 support
- ONE WRONG CLICK BY AN EMPLOYEE IS CONTAINED BEFORE IT SPREADS - Threats are isolated and neutralized in the cloud before they ever execute on a device - so a phishing link or infected attachment stays a minor event rather than a network-wide incident
- YOUR INTERNET STAYS UP WHEN YOUR CONNECTION DROPS - Built-in SD-WAN automatically switches to your backup connection when your primary ISP fails - keeping remote workers productive without any manual intervention
- CONFIGURE IT FROM YOUR OFFICE AND SHIP IT TO THEIRS - Zero-touch RapidDeploy lets you set up the device remotely; Total Security Suite includes a full year of logs in WatchGuard Cloud so you always have visibility into your distributed network
- Identify the installed software. Check the Firejail version and how your distribution packages Firefox. The upstream manual content identifies Firejail 0.9.77, but your installed version may differ (Firejail manual).
- Inspect the active Firefox profile. Confirm the profile’s filesystem restrictions, exposed paths, and package-specific rules. Do not assume a profile from another distribution applies to yours.
- Choose network access. Use
--net=noneonly when Firefox should be offline. If websites must load, review a LAN-blocking firewall policy for your actual interfaces and both IP families rather than treating a network namespace as sufficient. - Choose persistence. Decide whether a temporary private home is acceptable or whether you need a persistent directory. Account for downloads and every separately exposed path.
- Check runtime status and validate boundaries. Firejail documents
firejail --listfor listing sandboxed processes (Firejail usage documentation). Then use safe test targets to check which files Firefox can access and whether the network policy blocks local services while allowing the external traffic you intend.
Debian testing’s Firejail manpage also cautions that some Firejail commands can still operate on the original home, reinforcing the need to understand the installed behavior rather than equating a private home with universal file isolation (Debian testing Firejail manpage).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep Firefox patched
Sandboxing reduces exposure; it does not replace browser security updates. Mozilla’s security advisories continue to list Firefox fixes (Mozilla security advisories). Keep Firefox and Firejail current, and reassess the profile after package or configuration changes.
