The deciding factors are your exact car and model year, your phone or watch, and the country where the car is sold. Confirm compatibility with the automaker before relying on a digital key as your only way into or out of the car.
What determines whether a phone can unlock your car?
A digital car key is a match between a specific vehicle and supported devices—not a feature guaranteed by owning a recent iPhone or Galaxy phone. Compatibility can vary by automaker, model year, market, device variant, and software. Start with the car maker’s current compatibility information, then check which entry methods and sharing features that vehicle supports.

- Vehicle: Verify make, model, model year, country, and any relevant trim or variant restrictions.
- Device: Check the exact iPhone, Apple Watch, or Galaxy model against the requirements for that vehicle.
- Access method: Confirm whether the car supports hands-free entry, tapping or placing the device near a reader, or remote controls.
- Fallback: Learn the vehicle’s backup procedure and keep an authorized physical key available if you may need access when the device is unavailable.
Apple advises checking with the manufacturer or dealer because its general support page does not give a universal car list. Samsung publishes market- and automaker-specific information, but also directs users to the automaker for exact models and dependencies. See Apple’s car-key setup and compatibility guidance, Samsung’s Digital Key availability information, and Samsung’s US Digital Key FAQ.
Which devices support Apple Wallet car keys?
Apple’s stated minimum device requirements are an iPhone XS or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation), with current iOS; alternatively, an Apple Watch Series 5 or later, or Apple Watch SE, with current watchOS. The device must be signed in to an Apple Account, and the vehicle must support car keys. A key added on an iPhone may also be added to its paired Apple Watch.

Pairing may begin through the car maker’s app, an email or text setup flow, or the vehicle’s display. Adding a key turns on Express Mode automatically. With Express Mode, the user can use the key without unlocking the device or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.
Those minimum requirements do not guarantee every feature on every eligible device. Apple says passive entry requires iPhone 11 or later, excluding iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) and iPhone 16e, or Apple Watch Series 6 or later. Some cars offer remote lock and unlock, which Apple lists for iPhone 11 or later or Apple Watch Series 6 or later, within Bluetooth range. The vehicle’s supported features determine which of these options are available.

Which devices and cars support Samsung Wallet Digital Key?
Samsung Digital Key is tied to a supported Galaxy phone and a compatible vehicle. Samsung says the key is stored in the phone’s integrated Secure Element, and describes NFC and UWB as access technologies. UWB can enable hands-free approach entry on some supported vehicles; it does not by itself make a car compatible with Samsung Wallet.

Recent Samsung vehicle additions
In an announcement dated October 6, 2026, Samsung said Wallet Digital Key support for select GM vehicles was available in the United States and Canada. The initial models named were the 2025–2027 Cadillac LYRIQ, 2026–2027 OPTIQ, and 2027 VISTIQ. Samsung said compatible devices can use UWB and BLE for automatic unlocking on approach, and that users can share keys, set permissions, and withdraw access in Wallet. Because this is a dated rollout announcement, check the current list before purchase or setup. See Samsung’s GM Digital Key announcement.

How do the entry methods compare?
The labels and procedures depend on the car. A vehicle may support one method but not another, so check the automaker’s instructions for the specific model.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

| Access method | Apple Wallet | Samsung Wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Hands-free approach entry | Some vehicles support passive entry, such as unlocking as the driver approaches or touches the handle, and potentially locking when the driver walks away. Apple lists the additional device requirements described above. | Some vehicles use UWB for hands-free approach entry. Samsung’s GM announcement also describes UWB and BLE for automatic unlocking on approach on compatible vehicles. |
| Tap or reader use | Some vehicles allow the user to hold the device near the door handle to lock or unlock, then place it in a reader to start the car. | Samsung describes NFC access; the exact tap or reader procedure depends on the vehicle. |
| Remote controls | Some vehicles support remote lock and unlock. Apple says this works within Bluetooth range and lists iPhone 11 or later or Apple Watch Series 6 or later for the feature. | Not stated in the cited Samsung sources as a general Wallet Digital Key feature; check the specific vehicle’s instructions. |
Can you share a car key?
Both platforms support sharing for some vehicles, but availability and controls depend on the car. Apple says owners can share a key through AirDrop or messaging apps such as Messages, Mail, and WhatsApp. The owner can name the key, set permissions, and optionally require an activation code. Samsung describes key sharing; its GM announcement specifically says users can set permissions and remotely withdraw access in Wallet. Check the automaker’s details to learn which controls apply to your vehicle.
Which wallet should you choose?
There is no universal winner. If you already own the car, first establish whether its exact model and year support either wallet in your country. Then compare your actual device against the automaker’s requirements and decide whether the supported access method—hands-free, tap, or remote control—fits how you use the car. If sharing matters, verify the permissions and revocation options for that vehicle rather than assuming they are identical across platforms.
Before depending on a phone key, ask the automaker how to get in and start the car if the device is unavailable. The cited wallet documentation does not establish one fallback procedure that applies to every vehicle.
