Which Phone Settings Use the Most Battery—and What Should You Change?

There is no universal ranking of battery-draining phone settings: the biggest drain depends on your device, signal, apps, and how you use it. Start with your phone’s Battery usage screen, then change the settings or activities it identifies. For many people, the most useful places to check are screen brightness and screen-on time, unnecessary background activity, and prolonged use of navigation, video, gaming, mobile data, or hotspot features.

Check what is using battery on your phone

Use your phone’s recent battery report before switching off features at random. It can help distinguish an app running in the foreground from background activity or system use, but the information and labels vary by device.

On iPhone

Open Settings > Battery. Review the daily usage chart and the App and System Activity section. Apple says this view can show app battery use, on-screen and background time, low cellular coverage, and notification activity. Suggestions or insights may appear when available. These details can help explain your own phone’s drain; they do not establish a universal ranking of settings. Apple’s guide to iPhone battery usage and health explains the report.

On Android and Pixel

On Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage to review apps and their background use. Google generally recommends leaving an app’s battery use set to Optimized. Other Android phones may use different menu names or controls, so follow your manufacturer’s support instructions if the path differs. Google Pixel’s battery-drain guide covers the Pixel report and troubleshooting.

Change the settings most likely to help

Reduce screen brightness and screen-on time

A bright display and a screen that stays on when you are not using it can contribute to drain. Lower brightness, enable automatic brightness if it suits you, and set the screen to turn off sooner. Apple identifies high brightness as a possible cause of faster battery drain; Google also recommends reducing brightness and shortening screen timeout. Apple’s battery-drain guidance and Google’s Android battery guidance describe these options.

Dark theme is another option on Android, but its savings depend on the phone and the screens or apps you use. Treat it as a secondary adjustment, not a guaranteed major improvement.

Limit background activity only for apps that warrant it

If the battery report shows an app using substantial power in the background when you do not need it to, consider limiting that activity. The tradeoff is that syncing or notifications may arrive later, or not work as expected. Avoid restricting every app preemptively: some background activity, such as mail fetching, photo syncing, music playback, or directions, may be part of a function you rely on.

Cut back on sustained, power-intensive tasks when practical

Navigation, GPS use, video or streaming, graphics-heavy games, hotspot use, and prolonged mobile-data use can all make a charge run down faster. If one of these activities coincides with a drain shown in your battery report, reducing its duration is more targeted than turning off unrelated features. Poor cellular coverage can also be relevant; iPhone’s battery view may flag low coverage.

Do not turn off location or connectivity across the board just to save power. Some apps and features will not work as intended without location access, and restricting network activity can delay connected tasks.

Use battery saver when its tradeoffs fit

Power-saving modes can help stretch a charge by reducing background work or changing selected features, but they may affect syncing, downloads, connections, performance, or app responsiveness.

iPhone: Low Power Mode

Open Settings > Battery and enable Low Power Mode. On newer models, the controls may appear under Settings > Battery > Power Mode. Depending on the model, Low Power Mode can reduce display brightness and visual effects, shorten Auto-Lock, pause iCloud Photos, disable automatic downloads and email fetch, and turn off Background App Refresh. Supported high-refresh-rate displays may be limited to 60 Hz. See Apple’s Low Power Mode instructions for details.

Android: Battery Saver

Android’s Battery Saver commonly appears under Settings > Battery, though the path and available controls vary by manufacturer and Android version. It may limit or turn off background activity, network connections, features, or apps; some actions can therefore be delayed. Google also recommends Adaptive Battery and, where useful, dark theme. Check your phone maker’s instructions for the exact options on your device.

Make one change at a time, then check the result

  1. Record the baseline: Open your Battery usage screen and note the main apps, system activity, and relevant foreground or background use.
  2. Try a display adjustment: Lower brightness, use automatic brightness if appropriate, or shorten the screen timeout.
  3. Target a confirmed cause: If an app’s background use stands out and delayed syncing or notifications are acceptable, restrict its background activity. If a sustained task is the likely cause, reduce that task instead.
  4. Use power saving for a temporary need: Enable Low Power Mode or Battery Saver when the runtime tradeoff is worthwhile.
  5. Check the report again: Compare it with your normal use after the change. Menu paths, available controls, and battery behavior differ across phones, so judge the result on your device.

If battery drain remains unusually high

Consider whether the phone recently installed a software update. Google notes that a Pixel can use more battery temporarily while it downloads and optimizes software after an update. If unusually high drain continues, follow Google Pixel’s troubleshooting guidance. On other devices, consult the manufacturer’s support instructions and the phone’s battery health or service information rather than assuming a particular setting is responsible.

Official guidance does not provide a comparable cross-phone ranking or a fixed amount of extra runtime for each change. The battery report is the best starting point for deciding what to adjust on your own phone.
