Choose BHIM if you want a dedicated UPI app. Choose Samsung Wallet if you have a compatible Galaxy phone and want UPI alongside other digital wallet items such as cards, passes and keys. Both cover everyday UPI tasks in the official material, but it does not establish a universal winner for speed, reliability, fees or security.

Choose Samsung Wallet if you want UPI in a broader wallet
Samsung Wallet is the better fit if you use an eligible Galaxy phone and value keeping UPI with other supported digital essentials in one place. Samsung’s India product page says Samsung Pay is integrated into Wallet; the older UPI how-to page still uses the Samsung Pay name. Wallet’s additional items depend on availability, so do not assume every feature works on every device or in every region.

Choose BHIM if you want a dedicated UPI app
BHIM is the more direct choice if your priority is a UPI-focused app rather than a broader Samsung wallet. The official BHIM/NPCI guidance describes linking bank accounts, making bank-to-bank transfers, sending and receiving money, and getting transaction alerts. Because that document is a branding and communication guideline updated on 25 September 2024—not a current, exhaustive app changelog—it should not be used to claim BHIM lacks features it does not list.

Samsung’s India guide describes UPI registration and payments under Samsung Pay, now integrated into Samsung Wallet. Its documented setup flow is to select UPI, create a profile and preferred virtual payment address (VPA), select a bank, set a UPI PIN and link an account. The mobile number used during setup must match the number registered with that bank account.

The guide also describes sending money to a VPA or bank account using an IFSC, requesting or receiving money, scanning UPI QR codes, paying online with a VPA, checking an account balance, paying bills and adding UPI as a cab-payment method. The guide’s menus and exact banking flow may change; follow the current in-app prompts and check with your bank if the screens differ.
Does Samsung Wallet work on your phone?
Do not assume UPI support on every Samsung phone. Samsung says Wallet availability and features vary by country or region, device model, carrier and firmware. Check the Wallet app and Samsung’s current information for your exact device and location before choosing it.

On 30 October 2025, Samsung announced UPI onboarding during new Galaxy device setup and biometric verification intended to avoid PIN entry for everyday UPI use. The announcement described a rollout on supported devices and used future-oriented timing for some features; it does not establish that either feature is available on every model or to every user. Confirm availability on the phone you plan to use.

Security: what can and cannot be concluded
Samsung says Wallet uses Knox, fingerprint recognition and encryption. Its separate security explanation describes tokenization for card details, replacing them with a device-specific token. That is Samsung’s own product description and includes card-wallet context; it does not show that Samsung Wallet UPI is safer than BHIM or provide a comparison of real-world fraud rates.

Whichever app you use, verify the recipient and amount before paying, protect your UPI PIN and use the official app. Biometric options should not be treated as removing every authorization requirement, and the 2025 announcement does not establish their availability on every device.

How to make the choice
- Pick Samsung Wallet if you have a supported Galaxy device and want UPI together with other Wallet items.
- Pick BHIM if you prefer a dedicated UPI app and do not need Samsung Wallet’s broader functions.
- Check your bank and device in the current app if a particular feature or setup flow is essential; the official sources do not prove exact feature parity between the apps.
- Choose by fit, not an assumed performance or safety ranking. The available official material does not establish a universal winner for speed, reliability, fees or security.
