If your Samsung Wallet digital car key is not working, first confirm that both your exact Galaxy phone and vehicle support the feature in your region. Then identify whether the car uses NFC or UWB: NFC requires close placement on a door reader and usually the wireless charging pad to start, while UWB relies on supported proximity unlocking and in-car authentication. Pairing also has to be completed through the automaker’s app or registration message and the vehicle’s menu—not just in Samsung Wallet.
Why won’t my Samsung phone pair with my car?
Compatibility depends on the automaker, exact vehicle and model year, Galaxy model, software, feature, and region. A general phone compatibility list cannot confirm that a particular car is supported. Check Samsung’s Canada digital-key instructions and Samsung’s device compatibility matrix, then verify your exact vehicle with its automaker. Availability can change, so do not rely on a list for a different market or model year.

- Set up Samsung Wallet first. If you have not used Wallet before, complete its initial setup before adding a car key. Samsung’s US Digital Car Keys FAQ also describes setup through the automaker’s app or a registration message.
- Start registration with the automaker. Install the vehicle maker’s app or open its registration message, register the vehicle, and follow its digital-key instructions.
- Complete the vehicle-side steps. Be in the car with the physical key available, open the car’s digital-key menu, and follow its prompts. Finish the handoff in Samsung Wallet when prompted.
- Update the phone and Wallet. Samsung directs users to Settings > Software update and Galaxy Store > Menu > Updates. Labels and availability vary by phone and software.
If setup stalls while the car is registering the key with its server, use the automaker’s instructions for that exact vehicle. Samsung’s general guidance does not establish a universal vehicle reset sequence.

Find out whether your vehicle uses NFC or UWB before changing settings. The two technologies use different unlocking interactions, and both phone and vehicle must support the relevant feature.

Samsung’s digital-key instructions describe the NFC and UWB flows; its Digital Key Framework listing identifies feature dependencies and permissions. Exact door-handle readers and locking behavior differ by automaker, so consult the vehicle manual or maker’s instructions for the reader location.
If the car uses NFC
- Place the phone’s NFC antenna area directly at the vehicle’s designated reader. If it is not detected, adjust the phone’s position or orientation.
- If NFC itself appears to be malfunctioning, toggle NFC off and on. Samsung’s general Galaxy NFC troubleshooting guidance is not specific to car keys, and menu names can vary by model and software.
If the car uses UWB
- Confirm UWB support for both the Galaxy phone and the exact vehicle.
- Check that the app or Wallet has the relevant permissions available, including location, physical activity, and nearby devices. Permission labels and controls depend on the software version.
My phone unlocks the car but won’t start it—what do I do?
Door unlocking does not necessarily prove that the key has completed vehicle-side registration. Samsung says: “If the Digital Key is not registered on the car company’s server, the car will not start.” Check the digital-key status in Samsung Wallet and the automaker’s registration instructions.

For NFC, authenticate on the charging pad
Place the phone on the vehicle’s wireless charging pad to authenticate the key, then press the start button. The pad’s recognition area varies by manufacturer. Samsung’s Canada support page advises: “If the car does not recognize your Galaxy phone, try again after slightly changing the placement or orientation of your phone on the wireless charging pad.”

After entering the car, complete the vehicle’s UWB key-authentication step before pressing the start button. If the car still will not start, check that the key is registered with the automaker’s server rather than treating successful unlocking as proof that registration is complete.

When should I contact the automaker?
Contact the vehicle maker when registration fails in the car’s menu, the key’s server status is unclear, or the car does not recognize the phone despite using the correct NFC reader or UWB flow. Ask for instructions specific to the vehicle’s make, model, year, and region; Samsung’s general steps do not establish model-specific fault codes or reset procedures. If the phone itself is unsupported, an accessory is not an established universal workaround: confirm compatibility before considering a different phone or any other remedy.
