Confirm both are complete before you start; enabling backup alone does not prove the upload has finished.
Before you start: check your connection and Google Account storage
Connect the Pixel 6 to a reliable internet connection and make sure your Google Account has enough available storage. Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail share Google Account storage, so a full account can prevent photos or videos from uploading. If you run out of space, Google lists clearing storage or buying more as options. See Google Photos’ backup guidance.

On the Pixel 6, open Settings > Google services > Backup. Menu wording can vary slightly with Android version.

Review Backup details to see which supported categories and apps are included. Google notes that photos, videos, and contacts sync through their respective services separately from the device backup. Refer to Google’s Pixel backup instructions.

Run or confirm the device backup from the Backup screen, then check its status rather than assuming that switching backup on completed it. Google says a backup can take up to 24 hours. Start early and allow time for it to finish; see Google One’s Android backup guidance.
Confirm photos and videos in Google Photos

Open Google Photos and check that the intended Google Account is selected and backup is enabled.

Check the backup status at the top of the Photos library. Wait until it says “Backup complete.” A completed device backup does not confirm that all photos and videos have uploaded.

If needed, Google Photos also lets you back up selected photos and videos manually. Follow Google’s Photos backup instructions.

Do a final check before installing the update

In Settings > Google services > Backup, review the device backup details and confirm the backup status is current and complete.

In Google Photos, confirm the status says “Backup complete.”

If either backup is paused, incomplete, or reports insufficient storage, address that before proceeding.

What a backup does—and does not—protect
Some app data may not be included or restored
Google says not all apps can be backed up or restored. Some app data, settings, and messages are restored only during device setup, so do not assume that every app’s private data will be recoverable after an update. Google’s Android backup guidance also says backed-up data, except photos and videos, is erased if the device is not used for 57 days.

A backup is not a promise of rollback
Google says a backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version. A backup reduces the risk of losing supported data, but it does not guarantee that an update can be rolled back or that every category can be restored afterward. Backup security varies by data
Google says data uploaded to its services is encrypted in transit and at rest, and some backup data receives additional protection with the device’s screen lock. That does not mean every backup category has identical end-to-end encryption; details are in Google One’s backup guidance.
