IDC’s finalized Q2 2026 table puts Samsung first among smartphone vendors worldwide, with a 22.7% share. Google Pixel is growing faster from a much smaller base, but the available figures do not show it close to Samsung in total shipment scale. “Face of Android” is shorthand for that scale—not a measured ranking of brand recognition or phone quality.
Is Samsung still the biggest Android phone brand?
Yes, by the latest global shipment figures cited here. IDC’s finalized Q2 2026 table records 62.7 million Samsung shipments and 22.7% worldwide share. These are shipments of new branded devices; refurbished units are excluded. Apple ranked second in that quarter with 55.7 million shipments and 20.2% share. IDC’s smartphone market-share table is the clearest current comparison in the cited data.

That answer is about vendors and shipment scale, not Android alone: Apple is included in the overall smartphone ranking, while Samsung is the leading Android vendor in the cited table. Shipment share does not establish which company is most recognized, which phone is best, or which brand leads in every country.

How Samsung and Pixel compare in the available figures
| Measure | Samsung | Google Pixel |
|---|---|---|
| Global share | 22.7% in IDC’s finalized Q2 2026 worldwide table; 62.7 million shipments. | Not stated in the cited sources. |
| Annual shipment growth | 5% year over year in Counterpoint’s 2025 annual snapshot. | 25% year over year in Counterpoint’s 2025 annual snapshot; Google remained outside the top five vendors. |
| Overall vendor ranking | Second worldwide for full-year 2025 in Counterpoint’s snapshot. | Outside the top five in that snapshot. |
The table combines different reporting periods and sources: IDC’s finalized Q2 2026 figures are quarterly, while Counterpoint’s figures cover all of 2025. They should not be read as a single head-to-head measurement. Counterpoint’s 2025 annual report says Apple led the overall smartphone market for the year, with Samsung second. Google’s 25% growth is notable, but a growth rate does not reveal total shipments or mean Pixel approached Samsung’s scale.

Why the phrase “face of Android” needs a qualifier
The shipment data explains why Samsung can reasonably be described as Android’s largest global phone maker: it ships more smartphones than any other vendor in the latest cited quarter, and its annual 2025 share was also substantial. But the phrase is not a consumer-perception finding. The cited sources do not measure which brand people think of first when they hear “Android.” Nor do global totals establish leadership in every national market.
Samsung also sells a broad Galaxy lineup, rather than relying on a single phone category. Its Galaxy S26 series is one current flagship example; Samsung announced global availability beginning March 11, 2026. That product announcement illustrates the range’s current flagship presence, but it is not evidence for the shipment ranking. Samsung’s announcement describes the company’s own availability statement.

What the rankings can—and cannot—tell you
- They can show scale: shipment totals and share indicate how many new branded smartphones vendors shipped in a defined period.
- They can show growth: Counterpoint’s 2025 result shows Google shipments grew faster year over year than Samsung’s in that snapshot.
- They cannot show preference or quality: the cited figures do not measure customer satisfaction, software experience, phone performance, or cultural recognition.
- They are time- and geography-specific: worldwide rankings do not substitute for country-level data, and a Q2 result is not an annual result.
Omdia’s preliminary Q2 2026 release also described Samsung as the largest smartphone vendor, assigning it 22% share, but it explicitly identified the release as preliminary and subject to later validation. IDC’s finalized table is the better source for the precise Q2 figure. Omdia’s release is useful as a contemporaneous preliminary account, not as a replacement for the finalized number.
