If your Samsung TV displays “App Not Compatible,” the app usually wasn’t made for the TV’s platform, model or region. Samsung Smart TVs do not generally accept Android APKs: 2016-and-later models run Tizen apps, while older model generations use different platforms. Check whether the app is listed for your exact TV and region before trying to sideload it.
Can I install an APK on a Samsung TV?
No—not as a native Samsung Smart TV app. An Android APK is built for Android, not Samsung’s TV platform. Samsung says that 2016-and-later Smart TVs run Tizen applications only. Changing a file’s name or copying an APK to a USB drive does not make it compatible.

Samsung’s platform support varies by model generation. Its developer guidance says 2010–2014 TVs use Samsung’s Legacy Platform, 2015 TVs support Tizen apps and retain compatibility with legacy apps, and 2016-and-later TVs run Tizen apps only. Why is this app not available on my Samsung TV?
If an app does not appear in the TV’s Apps catalog, Samsung says it is likely incompatible with that model. Availability can also depend on region. Before troubleshooting, check these details:

- The TV’s full model code and model year, rather than just its screen size or product-series name.
- Your country or region and the region associated with the TV.
- The TV’s software version.
- The app publisher’s list of supported Samsung TV models and regions.
Samsung notes that features and menu names vary by model, software version and region. Its TV app troubleshooting guidance explains how to check whether an app is available and what to try when one is missing.
How do I sideload apps on my Samsung TV?
For everyday TV owners, there is no general USB sideloading method that bypasses Samsung’s app compatibility rules. Samsung states: “For security reasons, ".wgt" application package files cannot be installed on a TV through USB.” The Samsung Developer Application Installation Q&A describes a separate USB Demo Packaging Tool for developer or demo use; it is not a consumer workaround for installing unsupported apps.

What Developer Mode is for
Developers can test suitable Tizen web apps on a Samsung TV using Developer Mode and Tizen Studio. That workflow requires a computer and TV on the same network, a connection through Tizen Studio, and appropriate signing certificates. It does not convert an Android APK into a Tizen app. Samsung’s TV device testing instructions and installation FAQ cover the developer process and common installation failures.
Samsung notes that a modified .wgt package may fail to install and need to be rebuilt. Signing certificates can also cause installation failures. These are developer packaging and testing issues, not ways to make an unsupported consumer app work.

What to do if an installed app freezes or will not open
If the app is already installed but freezes, fails to load or crashes, try Samsung’s recommended sequence. The steps address a malfunctioning supported app; they do not make an incompatible app compatible.
- Cold boot the TV. With the TV on, press and hold the remote’s Power button until the TV turns off and back on. If that method is unavailable on your model, unplug the TV briefly, then reconnect it.
- Update the TV software. Open the TV’s Settings and look for the software update option. Menu names and locations vary by model and software version, so consult the TV’s on-screen menus or Samsung’s support page for your model.
- Delete and reinstall the app. Remove it from the TV, then install it again from the Apps catalog if it is available there.
- Reset Smart Hub. Use this only after the earlier steps; it resets Smart Hub settings and may require you to sign in to apps again. The exact menu path varies by model and region.
